If you're old enough to understand the reference in this headline -- George Carlin, anyone? -- then you're old enough to need a refresher course when it comes to talking about technology.

We've put together a list of outdated tech terms, phrases that you shouldn't be using at work anymore because they will make you seem old. This is especially true if you're looking for a new job. For example, on an interview, you should be talking about "cloud computing," not "ASPs" even though they are basically the same thing.

This list is useful for 20-somethings, too. Now when the senior person in the office uses one of these terms, you'll know what he's talking about.

Skype singled out as threat to Russia's security

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's most powerful business lobby moved to clamp down on Skype and its peers this week, telling lawmakers that the Internet phone services are a threat to Russian businesses and to national security.

In partnership with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's political party, the lobby created a working group to draft legal safeguards against what they said were the risks of Skype and other Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone services.

ost Americans now have mobile phones, and a Nielsen Mobile report last year found that nearly one in five of us have cut the cord, abandoning our landline service entirely. Danny Kessler of Tempe, Arizona, is one of those people, except he has gone the next step: He recently gave up his cell-phone contract too. Kessler's no hermit: He's a 27-year-old personal-safety instructor who has to be in touch with his clients. He just does all his telephoning via the internet. Today Kessler is an anomaly, but internet telephony (a.k.a. voice-over-internet-protocol, or VoIP) is in a position to dominate the phone business of the future just as mobile usurped the throne of the hard-wired handset.

It may seem outlandish to imagine the phone networks being supplanted by VoIP, which is currently hobbled by spotty internet access and mobile carriers protecting their interests.

A controversial new data retention law comes into force this week which means that your internet service provider is now legally obliged to store details of your emails and VoIP calls for a year, as part of the 'war on terror'.

"ISPs will be legally obliged to store details of emails and internet telephony for 12 months as a potential tool to aid criminal investigations," reads a report in the Guardian.

"Although the content of emails and calls will not be held, ISPs will be asked to record the date, time, duration and recipients of online communications."

The move is an extension of a current EC directive on data retention that already applies to telecoms providers brought into force as a response to the2005 London bombings.

German telecommunications giant T-Mobile will not allow their customers to use the new Skype application for the iPhone, the company told The Local on Tuesday.

The internet telephony (VoIP) service Skype allows users to make telephone calls for free, or at least significantly more cheaply than traditional telephone providers. There have been several unofficial applications for mobile devices in use for some time, but the first official iPhone application for the service launched on Tuesday – free of charge – to a host of excited media chatter.

FEMA phones hacked; more than 400 calls made to Middle East and Asia at cost of $12,000

WASHINGTON - A hacker broke into a Homeland Security Department telephone system over the weekend and racked up about $12,000 in calls to the Middle East and Asia.

The hacker made more than 400 calls on a Federal Emergency Management Agency voicemail system in Emmitsburg, Md., on Saturday and Sunday, according to FEMA spokesman Tom Olshanski.

FEMA is part of Homeland Security, which in 2003 put out a warning about this very vulnerability.

The voicemail system is new and recently was installed. It is a Private Branch Exchange, or PBX, a traditional corporate phone network that is used in thousands of companies and government offices. Many companies are moving to a higher tech version, known as Voice Over Internet Telephony.

"In this case it's sort of embarrassing that it happened to FEMA themselves — FEMA being a child of DHS, with calls going to the Middle East," Johnson said.

The FBI has quietly built a sophisticated, point-and-click surveillance system that performs instant wiretaps on almost any communications device, according to nearly a thousand pages of restricted documents newly released under the Freedom of Information Act and provided to Wired News by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The surveillance system, called DCSNet, for Digital Collection System Network, connects FBI wiretapping rooms to switches controlled by traditional land-line operators, internet-telephony providers and cellular companies. It is far more intricately woven into the nation's telecom infrastructure than observers suspected.

It's a "comprehensive wiretap system that intercepts wire-line phones, cellular phones, SMS and push-to-talk systems," says Steven Bellovin, a Columbia University computer science professor and longtime surveillance expert.
