Last week, I explained how humans might soon be learning things from robots. Today, I’d like to explain why robots might become a more integral part of life faster than most people expect.

Yesterday, Technology Review published an interesting article entitled: ”Robots Learns to Use Tools.” What is really intriguing about the article, which describes a new robot called the UMass Mobile Manipulator or UMan for short, is that the robot is employing sophisticated algorithms to teach itself how to deal with unfamiliar objects.

One of the major barriers to date with robotics is that programmers have had to write complicated software code to help robots deal with almost every contingency that it might encounter. For example, for a household robot to be effective, it needs to recognize every item that might conceivably be in someone house—everything from a pair of scissors to a flower vase. This is no easy chore.

The implications of self-learning robots could be quite profound

The computer of tomorrow

Conceived by Korean designer Won-Seok-Lee, the “B-membrane” is one of the most interesting PC prototypes I’ve ever seen.

The B-membrane looks nothing like a conventional computer, more like a spaceship or space station, but it is indeed a PC, able to project an image of your desktop on any surface you can point its omni-directional projector at, thus rendering even the slimmest LCD monitor useless. It also has a membrane keyboard and mouse that appear only when you need them too, and an optical drive.

The B-membrane isn’t useless even when it is shut-down, its smart projector turns it into an ambient light-effects system to spice up the look of your crib.

Recycled plastic bottle sculptures resemble sea creatures

This used plastic water bottle lamp (one of a series of recycled lamps by Lisa Foo and Su Sim) resembles a sea creature from movies like "The Abyss" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". Really interesting craftsmanship with these lights that will really fool you into thinking they are made of more expensive materials. Alien Monolith Found on Saturn's Moon Iapetus?

In the deep reaches of our solar system, 40,000 kms away, orbiting the planet Saturn - exists a moon with a most interesting feature.

The moon is Iapetus.

This planetary body that defies what we know about moons & planets. Recent images sent from NASA's Cassini probe have revealed a gigantic equilateral "ridge" circling the equator. The epic proportions of the ridge are not seen anywhere else in the universe.

The magnitude of this 20 KM high equilateral ridge is almost beyond comprehension. In photographs taken of Iapetus you can clearly see the ridge, visible from space. These are not your "wall of China" proportions.

Mt. Everest highest peak is about 9 KM. This ridge is double that size and circles almost the entire planet

Summary: During a segment in which Fox & Friends co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade labeled New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg and editor Steven Reddicliffe "attack dogs," Fox News featured photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe that appeared to have been digitally altered -- the journalists' teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated, and portions of Reddicliffe's hair moved further back on his head.
