With its bright colours and unusual patterns these canvasses are the latest examples of scientific art.

Known as "Visual DNA" these spectacular images are the data visualisation of sequenced animal and plant genes.

German creator Daniel Becker, explains how the process of translating DNA text into colourful symbols is not as complicated as it sounds.

"DNA art interprets the complex information of DNA with the help of symbols and colours," says the 29-year-old from Frankfurt.

"The result is a individual graphic pattern for any creature or plant.

"For the naked eye a DNA sequence is a string of thousands of those four letters.

"So I came up with the idea to interpret these genes into symbols and colours."

A Student of Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, Daniel also works as a graphic designer.

"They can use the graphics to print it on T-shirts, cups, use it as a poster.

Robot builders seek a little help from sci-fi

Smart thinks those raised expectations were down to the impact of unrealistically human-like robots in movies and books. "People don't really know what they are. C-3PO in Star Wars is very humanlike, intelligent and capable, but real robots are not like that at all."

Instead of just forcing people to alter their expectations, Smart thinks it makes sense to study how people's ideas about robots are influenced by fiction. That knowledge could be used to design robots that make the most of those expectations.

"My real concern is to get people and robots to play together nicely," says Smart.
Engineers might learn from fictional robots in other ways, says Sharkey.

"It's surprising how often people make nervous jokes about robots taking over the world. I don't want to make too much of that, but I think there's something there." So says one roboticist who thinks finding out exactly how fictional robots influence people can help engineers build real ones.

"Most people have never seen a robot before," Smart told New Scientist. "Their experiences – such as they are – all come from movies or literature."

That affects the way people react to real robots, he says.

"People have a theory in their head about how something will behave, and if a robot doesn't fit with that theory, people get nervous," he explains. "It's like standing next to the twitchy guy at the bus stop. He goes against your expectations and you get worried."

For example, not everyone responded well to a robot built by Smart and colleagues that moves around a room composing and then snapping photos of people.

clipper's remarks: To be fair, it doesn't appear that McCain's pick for VP is a dyed-in-the-wool creationist but she still believes in the absurd notion that biblical creationism has a ligitimate place in the science classroom. Her ridiculous "teach the controversy" stance is of course the back door ploy by religious fanatics to gain a toehold in public classrooms. I don't see them siding with Native American's to teach their particular creation myth.

Intelligent Design and the Alaska Governor's Race

The volatile issue of teaching creation science in public schools popped up in the Alaska governor's race this week when Republican Sarah Palin said she thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution in the state's public classrooms.
Palin was answering a question from the moderator near the conclusion of Wednesday night's televised debate on KAKM Channel 7 when she said, 'Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.'

Asked for her personal views on evolution, Palin said, "I believe we have a creator."

She would not say whether her belief also allowed her to accept the theory of evolution as fact.

"I'm not going to pretend I know how all this came to be," she said.

HRL Laboratories, LLC, will begin pioneering research to develop electronics that will simulate the cognitive capabilities and efficiencies of the biological brain.

The daunting undertaking is part of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency's (DARPA) SyNAPSE, or Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics, program. HRL will lead a group of industry and university research laboratories with expertise in core areas of neuro and cognitive science in the groundbreaking research.

Despite exponential advances in computing technology over the last decade, the limitations of hardware and architecture prohibit computers from functioning independently in real-world scenarios. The goal of the SyNAPSE program is to bridge biology and electronics and establish a new paradigm for creating more intelligent machines that can interact with, react to, and actually learn from their environments.

SLATES describes the combined use of effective enterprise search and discovery, using links to connect information together into a meaningful information ecosystem using the model of the Web, providing low-barrier social tools for public authorship of enterprise content, tags to let users create emergent organizational structure, extensions to spontaneously provide intelligent content suggestions similar to Amazon's recommendation system, and signals to let users know when enterprise information they care about has been published or updated, such as when a corporate RSS feed of interest changes.

While SLATES forms the basic framework of Enterprise 2.0, it does not negate all of the higher level Web 2.0 design patterns and business models.

Adjusting temperature, music, lighting, and putting a pot on boil are all things that could be done automatically. Taken a step further we look at intelligent environments, where the home is constantly monitoring our health and safety, and is prepared to respond quickly. An intelligent home of the future may also ask us what time we want to wake up when we hit the sack.

A plausible prediction is that these intelligent environments and or ambient intelligence will take away many of our chores and allow us to focus on productivity, learning, and leisure. They may stream customized interactive information that serves to create a nurturing environment. Differing from ubiquitous computing, it would allow us to create an intimitate connection with technology.

The change to the current arrangement was gradual, new fossil studies suggest, contradicting the long-held idea of a sudden shift. Intelligent design advocates have said sudden shifts in the fossil record are evidence of a higher power creating new animal forms.

On 4 October 2007 the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly passed Resolution 1580, which

urged member states to “defend and promote scientific knowledge” and “firmly oppose the teaching of creationism as a scientific discipline on an equal footing with the theory of evolution.”

In Russia a 16-year-old girl launched a court case against the Ministry of Education, backed by the Russian Orthodox Church, challenging the teaching of just one “theory” of biology in school textbooks as a breach of her human rights. In the UK in 2006 the Intelligent Design propagandists Truth in Science sent out a “teaching pack” to every secondary school and sixth-form college in the country.
