It appears to be more of a workaround than a true clean install, however. Here's what it says.

1. Boot with the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD.

2. Click "Install Now."

3. Do not enter a Product Key When prompted.

4. When prompted, select the Vista product edition that you do have.

6. Install Vista normally.

7. Once the install is complete, restart the DVD-based Setup from within Windows Vista. Perform an in-place upgrade.

8. Enter your Product Key when prompted.

Why not make a backup image of Windows XP with a program like Acronis True Image 10.0? Its Vista compatible. If you have to reinstall Vista just load the Windows XP image on your drive, it takes about 2 minutes, and then reinstall Vista over Windows XP.

<clipSource>http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/95011/microsoft-confirms-vista-upgrade-limitations-updated-with-workaround.html</clipSource>

Firefox 3 Tab Mix Plus Workaround

clipped by: logik
clipper's remarks: Why?
Making Tab mix plus and other firefox addons work with Firefox 3 beta

I installed Firefox 3 beta and the addon I missed the most was Tab Mix Plus (along with IETab, but that works on the beta). Here's how I was able to have Tab Mix Plus working on Firefox 3:

1) Try downloading the latest dev build of the addon from this link.

2) If it won't install for security reasons, you can disable the security check and also disable the comparability check as outlines here.

3) If all else fails, you can install the firefox nightly tester tools addon, which will allow you to force compatibility of all non compatible extensions. if Firefox won't startup and crash , start it up in safe mode (in the start menu you'll have a firefox safe mode shortcut) and disable all addons. then enable only those who don't cause the the crash.

Embedded nulls in location.hostname confuse same-domain checks

Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) SSLv2 buffer overflow

XSS and local file access by opening blocked popups

Spoofing using custom cursor and CSS3 hotspot

Information disclosure through cache collisions

Improvements to help protect against Cross-Site Scripting attacks

For Vista, it is recommended that Firefox be installed in the default location. If the browser is installed in a non-default location, software updates may fail. You can reinstall the software to the default location or to a non-default location as long as the install folder is named “Mozilla Firefox”. Alternatively, you can start Firefox by right-clicking on its icon and selecting “Run as administrator” from the menu.

A Windows Media Player (WMP) plugin is not provided with Windows Vista. As a workaround, in order to view Windows Media content, you can install the WMP Plugin v6.4 for Netscape Navigator.

Vista Parental Controls are not completely honored. In particular, file downloads do not honor Vista’s parental control settings. This will be addressed in an upcoming Firefox release.

When migrating from Internet Explorer 7 to Firefox, cookies and saved form history are not imported.

You can download Firefox in your language and for your operating system from this page.

For Firefox in english language and for windows operating system use this link.

If you are already using Firefox click Help on the menu bar and then select check for updates… and then install it from there. The reason why I am recommending it is that this way the install size is only 744 KB. While if you download the whole package it’ll be about 5.7 MB.

Tags: updates

<clipSource>http://rashidmalik.wordpress.com/2007/02/24/firefox-2002-released/</clipSource>

Windows Vista - Complicated purchase decisions - Or why Microsoft loose market

clipped by: pallefs

Clip Source: www.computerworld.com.au

Microsoft is losing consumer operating system market share to Apple for many reasons, but most of those reasons can be oversimplified thus: Mac OS is simple, and Windows is complicated.

Don't feel bad if you still don't know which of the Upgrade proof policies above is the real one -- few outside Microsoft do. (In fact, none of them is correct.)

Microsoft created this confusion by failing to tell anyone what the proof requirement would be for using an Upgrade version of Vista.

There is a widely published workaround that enables users to install Upgrade versions of Vista without XP. It involves, essentially, installing Vista twice. Whether this work-around is considered by Microsoft as legitimate or a form of piracy -- like so much about Vista -- is still unknown.

When Bill Gates launched Windows 95 a dozen years ago, consumers understood what they were getting. It was a brand-new Windows, vastly superior to Windows 3.x, and came in exactly one version. PC users could just go to the store and buy it, take it home and install it, and they didn't need a doctorate to figure out how to do all this.

Fast forward to this week. Windows Vista launched with 10 -- count 'em, 10 -- versions. Instead of giving us a simple new upgrade path to the future, they instead gave us a homework assignment. Here are the versions:

It's obvious that Microsoft decided to extract maximum cash from consumers by micro-segmenting the market and trying to provide a different version for each. But they may end up with the opposite result. All this confusion over versions and upgrade policies will motivate unknown millions of consumers to simply stick with Windows XP or move to a Mac.

Wow!

Tags: microsoft, windows, vista, os, purchase, decision, psychology, market, complex, business, apple, mac, linux

<clipSource>http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id</clipSource>

Clean install with MS Vista Upgrade DVD

clipped by: RSMurphy
clipper's remarks: Not really new information but still valid and this lays out the procedures pretty clearly.

Clip Source: www.dailytech.com

Windows enthusiast Paul Thurrott has published a possible, but yet-to-be-confirmed, workaround for Vista's new upgrade requirement. It's still not too pretty, but it allows you to install an upgrade copy of Vista without dealing with older versions of Windows.

Quote:

1. Boot with the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD.
2. Click “Install Now.”
3. Do not enter a Product Key When prompted.
4. When prompted, select the Vista product edition that you do have.
5. Install Vista normally.
6. Once the install is complete, restart the DVD-based Setup from within Windows Vista. Perform an in-place upgrade.
7. Enter your Product Key when prompted.

Can anyone with upgrade copies of Vista confirm if this method works in Parallels and gets around the ACPI requirement?

performs disc checks during an operating system install.
In the past, when performing a clean install, a user could boot from an install
CD and insert a disc from a previous version of Windows for upgrade compliance.

However, per Microsoft's new licensing requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a Windows Vista Upgrade from within Windows XP. When
this occurs, the Windows XP license is forfeited and the Windows Vista installation
process can take place.

DailyTech has confirmed a new workaround
proposed by Paul Thurrott (via Microsoft internal documents).

This workaround allows users to perform a “clean
install.” The process is a bit tedious, but is not hard at all to complete. Users have to perform these simple steps to perform a clean install
of Vista without a previous version of Windows installed with an upgrade DVD:

Tags: microsoft, vista, windows, business, knowledge management

<clipSource>http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5932</clipSource>

Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade DVDs

clipped by: amygaley

Clip Source: www.dailytech.com

We had just started to resign ourselves to the fact that we were going to need Windows XP on our hard drive if we ever had to reinstall our upgrade version of Vista. Then they <STRIKE>came up with a solution</STRIKE> left open a gaping loophole. That's right, you can install the upgrade version of Vista on a blank hard drive. The bad news? The workaround's almost as much of a pain in the ass as the original problem, requiring multiple installs...

Basically, start the setup for your upgrade version of Vista on a blank hard drive, but don't enter the product key. Instead, install it as a 30-day trial. Once Vista's up and running, run setup again, entering your product key this time. Do a clean install, then pat yourself on the back for <STRIKE>saving $80</STRIKE> not having to keep XP around in case you want a new hard drive at some point.

Act fast, cause there's no telling how long this little hole's going to stay open. – Matt Buchanan

Tags: microsoft, vista, upgrade, install, workaround

<clipSource>http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/how-to-install-a-vista-upgrade-on-a-blank-hard-drive-232770.php</clipSource>

apache and iis on the same server

clipped by: danyb

Clip Source: www.google.com

EditDelete

Running Apache and IIS 6 together on the same server

We have a Windows Small Business Server at work, which we wanted to install Subversion onto. We therefore wanted to run Apache on the same server. However, IIS is also installed on the same machine for Small Business Server purposes so I couldn't just remove IIS.

I had added multiple IP addresses to the server so that IIS could have one and Apache could have another (so they could both run on port 80). However, I ran into the problem that IIS was taking control of all IP addresses on port 80 and so Apache wouldn't start. It seems that IIS 6.0 has a "feature" called Socket Pooling that claims all ports for all loaded IP address (even if not configured in IIS) - nice! So IIS had control of the port 80 on the IP address I had assigned to Apache.

Do not fear - there is a workaround:

Extract the httpcfg.exe utility from the support tools area on the Win2003 CD.

stop all IIS services: net stop http /y

have IIS listen only on the IP address I'd designated for IIS: httpcfg set iplisten -i 192.168.1.253

make sure: httpcfg query iplisten (the ip's listed are the only ip addresses that IIS will be listening on and no other)

restart IIS Services: net start w3svc

start Apache service

You'll then find that Apache and IIS will then play nicely together and run on the correct ports on the correct IP addresses. Woo hoo!

Note created October 25, 2006
Prismix Blog: Running Apache and IIS 6 together on the same server - 209.85.135.104/...

Tags: apache, servers, iis, internet

<clipSource>http://www.google.com/notebook/fullpage</clipSource>

Install multiple versions of IE

clipped by: slosd
clipper's remarks: Download here:
http://tredosoft.com/files/multi-ie/multiple-ie-setup.exe

Clip Source: tredosoft.com

Install multiple versions of IE on your PC

Ever
wanted to test your website in various versions of
Internet Explorer?

It is possible to run Internet Explorer in standalone mode
without having to over-write previous versions thanks to Joe
Maddalone
who came up with a way of achieving that in November 2003. Basically,
Internet Explorer is run by exploiting a known workaround to DLL hell -
which was introduced in Windows 2000 and later versions - called DLL
redirection.

Manfred
Staudinger
perfected the standalone versions by adding IE version numbers to the
title bar of the standalone browser window. Moreover, by removing the
"IE" key in the registry subkey [
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Version Vector
] Internet Explore defaulted to
respecting
conditional comments based on the version number prebuilt in the
program.

It is not difficult to follow the instructions and get any
version of IE running in standalone along side other versions. Most of
you probably know of evolt's
archive of Internet Explorer which has
them readily packaged in ZIP files. Now suppose you want to download
them all. An installer that would conveniently automate the whole
process would be great. Thanks to this
comment for the idea.

So I made an installer which contains IE3 IE4.01 IE5 IE5.5 and IE6

Tags: ie, internet explorer, multiple, versions

<clipSource>http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE</clipSource>

Hack to Change Windows XP Home to Professional

clipped by: Djiezes
clipper's remarks: I guess this'll work.
