Commentary:

Although some commentators have postulated that the message is a hoax and the attached photographs are clever fakes, the Uno is in fact real. A December 2008 New York Times article notes:

Ultimately, this use – or misuse – of fear and rumour over Hasan's Islamic faith should be moot in light of the record of the thousands of Muslim American soldiers who have served and made sacrifice – such as Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, awarded the prestigious Purple Heart and Bronze Star and praised by Colin Powell, who now rests in Arlington cemetery after giving his life to protect and serve his country in Iraq. There are currently 20,000 Muslims serving with honour in the US military, according to the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Council. If Hasan's faith is ultimately proven to be the misguided inspiration for his violence, then the brave and patriotic service of thousands of Muslim American soldiers renders him an isolated and aberrant exception.

One need not look to the farthest reaches of outer space for inspiration. As these photographs from National Geographic’s Best Pictures of the Year reveal, Mother Nature continues to dazzle us right here on Earth.

This is an occasion where the adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” is truly appropriate, so I will limit my words out of respect for a subject human words could never aptly describe. Kenneth Johnson, who wrote and directed the 1983 miniseries (it spawned a sequel and then a regular network series over the next two years), took his inspiration from a 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel called It Can’t Happen Here that depicted an imaginary fascist takeover of the United States. The aliens in the original V were patterned after Nazis, and, just in case anyone missed the point, an elderly Jewish character who was a Holocaust survivor periodically hammered on the similarities.

But ABC’s series takes aim not at a German dictator from the misty past but a sitting " and popular " U.S. president.

As a fan of the original version of “V” I was prepared not to like the new ABC series.

I was wrong.

I love the hope, change, peace, universal health care …. and complete annihilation of the human race.

I don’t know about you, but I find it rather humorous, and highly ironic that an ABC series, that is a take-off on the charisma of Obama, debuts the night Obama gets skunked at the polls.

Is the bloom off the rose?

They have the most powerful weapon – “devotion” – just what managed to get hope/change elected.

What about “Anna’s” resemblance to The One (reptilian)?

Of course and alien presence would fully explain the Dems in 2008. What happened just wasn’t normal. Then again The Pink Flamingo could simply be giving in to alien invasion hysteria.

“…V, an ambitious remake of a 1980s NBC show, in many respects stays close to the original’s story line. What has changed — radically — is the political subtext.

Far North Queensland's latest crocodile hunter and wildlife entertainer Corey Wild .

With the launch of his new wildlife adventure series on DVD, his good looks and his Irwinesque charm, Cairns conservationist Corey Wild is being touted as the new wildlife warrior.

"Steve and I share similar interests and passions and he was a great inspiration to me," said Mr Wild, who works as a presenter for a crocodile attack show at the Johnstone River Crocodile Park and as a snake catcher.

"When I was six, I used to try and smuggle my pet huntsman into my grandmother’s house under my hat," he said.

"She used to make me take it off before I was allowed in."

Over the years, his love for dangerous animals grew and Mr Wild worked throughout southeast Asia and Australia at crocodile farms, zoos and wildlife parks.

New Crossing Londons Oxford Circus

Pedestrians usually run a gauntlet of fear and frustration in London's Oxford Circus.

But not any more, after one of Europe's busiest diagonal crossings opened at the junction of famous shopping strips Oxford Street and Regent Street on Monday.

Rather than waiting impatiently on crammed footpaths and having to cross two streets, or darting over the road to beat the lights, hurrying shoppers can cross the bustling thoroughfare in an "X" shape quickly - and safely.

Based on the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo, the new design stops traffic in all directions at once, allowing the junction to handle double the number of pedestrians and ease overcrowding.

London Mayor Boris Johnson unveiled the crossing by striking a giant cymbal in homage to its Asian inspiration as Japanese musicians played taiko drums.

Recently, a friend tipped us off to a new animal she wanted, a goofy-faced creature we, too, want IMMEDIATELY. The axolotl is a Mexican mole salamander (also called an ajolote) currently facing extinction in Mexico City, but not if we have anything to say about it.

Apparently kept as domestic pets in the U.S., Great Britain, Australia, and Japan (where they're called "wooper loopers," because DUH!), the axolotl is not only the cutest thing under water, but even provided the inspiration for Wooper, a member of the Pokemon collective or whatever.

More importantly, it SMILES. We want, we want, we want. YAY SCIENCE!
