If all hospitals performed as well as 5-star facilities, as ranked by an independent healthcare ratings company, 237,420 U.S. Medicare patient deaths could have been prevented between 2005 and 2007.

That's the upshot of a new study that finds you have a 70 percent lower chance of dying at a facility that is top-ranked by HealthGrades compared to its lowest-ranked ones across 17 procedures and conditions that were the reasons for the hospital visits. More than half of the Medicare patient deaths were associated with four conditions: sepsis (a systemic response to infection), pneumonia, heart failure and respiratory failure.

The good news: The nation's in-hospital risk-adjusted mortality rate improved, 14.2 percent on average from 2005 to 2007, HealthGrades announced today in releasing its 11th annual survey on hospital quality. The nation's best-performing hospitals were able to reduce their death rates at a much faster rate than poorly performing hospitals.

Report Says 237,000 Medicare Deaths Could Have Been Prevented

A new study shows patients have on average a 70 percent lower chance of dying at the nation's top-rated hospitals compared with the lowest-rated hospitals.

The study also found that if all hospitals performed at the level of five-star rated hospitals, 237,420 Medicare deaths could have been prevented over the three years studied. More than half of those deaths were associated with four conditions: sepsis (a life-threatening illness caused by systemic response to infection), pneumonia, heart failure and respiratory failure.

The study is also the basis for HealthGrades' 2009 quality ratings for all nonfederal hospitals in the country. The ratings are available at www.healthgrades.com, a Web site designed to help individuals research and compare local healthcare providers.

It Works Pretty Well!!

As a matter of fact, my first FDD(USB-FD1X) crashed, so I decided to buy it! This one sure runs faster than USB-FD1X. I hope this is going to be more robust! Like I said in the review of USB-FD1X, I need FDD drive for the following reasons:

1.My computer doesn't have FDD.

2.Using CDs and DVDs is strictly prohibited in some facilities to avoid virus infection.

Although FDs are getting out of date, FDDs help a lot particularly for some office workers and people like me who have to use FDs. All you have to do is just connect to an USB outlet. No installment is required! It is a little pricier than USB-FD1X, but it's worth it. USB-FDX2BK does look nice and works better than USB-FD1X, that's for sure! I'll blow a gasket if this FDD crashes sooner than USB-FD1X!

So don't label FDDs 'out'! FDDs are pretty handy.

New Brunswick veterinarians will soon no longer perform cosmetic surgery on dogs, docking tails or cropping ears to make them stand at point.

Members of the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association made the decision because they say it's not in a puppy's best interest to have its ears and tail trimmed just for a certain look.

Cathy Adams, a vet practising in Rothesay, near Saint John, said she cringes whenever dogs come in for these procedures because she believes they are painful.

"Usually, when it's done, it's done between three and five days old. It's done without the benefit of anesthesia. People say it doesn't really hurt them, but they scream when you do it," she said.

The decision to stop cropping and docking in animal hospitals is drawing criticism from some dog breeders and kennel clubs.

Proteins isolated from alligator blood may lead to new antibiotics to treat "superbugs", such as MRSA.

Speaking at the American Chemical Society conference, US researchers said the discovery could also lead to treatments for severe burns and ulcers.

Alligators can suffer serious injuries during fierce territorial battles but heal quickly despite contact with bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Antibiotic resistance is on the rise yet there is a lack of new treatments.

Humans build up immunity to infection-causing organisms after coming into contact with them.
