If you asked a random sample of progressive Democrats and liberal bloggers to describe the current state of political media, from CNN to The New York Times, there’s one word that’s unlikely to come up: “liberal.”

For those on the left, the more operative words these days are “mainstream,” “establishment,” or “traditional.” And if one is feeling particularly aggrieved, the description of choice is increasingly — and surprisingly - “conservative.”

Gone are the days when only the right howled about bias and malice from network anchors and star political reporters. What began roughly a decade ago as frustration from Democrats over coverage of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment and adulterous escapades, has morphed into an informally organized rapid response network, ready to pounce on any and all perceived slights against Barack Obama at the hands of the media.

This is the only party that even has social justice as its core principle. When we say ending the war, we mean all the wars. We need to get all the military out of every country, we need to begin to deal with issues of what peace can look like, how do you sustain that. Obviously, the green party is at the forefront of pushing the environment as a core value, that was innovative then. There should be an end to imprisoning young people, an immediate stop to the death penalty, a livable wage, not a minimum wage. Impeachment for George Bush and them is critical. I think if we don’t hold them accountable as a people, then anybody can do the same shit that they did.

Cynthia McKinney gave an online interview with Kate Sheppard that appeared on environmental news website Grist.org today.

“Right now we’ve got two energy policies in this country,” McKinney told Grist. “One is war, the other is drilling. And neither one of them works.” It’s a message she hopes will win over voters who have tired of both the Democratic and Republican parties.

McKinney was a Democrat herself for years, representing Georgia’s 4th district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2003, and again from 2005 to 2007. She was the first African-American woman to represent her state on the federal level. During her time in the House, McKinney was active on environmental issues, particularly those related to human health.

Saddest of all is the contrast of who Pelosi once was to who she his now. For a woman who was once at the cutting edge of social progressivism, Nancy Pelosi has lost her way. She has strayed from her former social consciousness into the malaise of power. A sorry state for a woman who 32 years ago was a pivotal player in the 1976 Presidential campaign of radically progressive California Governor, Jerry Brown.

Pervez Musharraf resigns as Pakistani President

The sound of gunfire, cheering and drums echoed in celebration across Pakistan last night after Pervez Musharraf, a stalwart US ally in the War on Terror, resigned as President, nine years after he seized power.

The general, who stepped down as army chief last year, announced his resignation during a rambling and sometimes emotional one-hour address to the nation. On Sunday the ruling coalition, which trounced his allies in the February election, had drawn up impeachment charges and said that it would present them to parliament this week if he did not resign.

Envoys from Saudi Arabia, the US and Britain - Pakistan’s three biggest sponsors - also met Mr Musharraf in recent days.

Maulvi Mohammed Omar, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taleban, said that it was day of jubilation for Muslims all over the world. Former pupils of the radical Red Mosque, which was raided by the military last year, offered prayers outside the parliament.

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has announced his resignation, before his political opponents planned to begin impeachment proceedings against him. VOA's Barry Newhouse reports from Islamabad, where Mr. Musharraf denied any wrongdoing and said he is stepping down for the good of the country.

The president scoffed at the as-yet unspecified impeachment charges against him - calling them baseless. However, he said that contesting them could further destabilize the country.

He says he is resigning for the good of Pakistan.

Pakistan People's Party Senator Raza Rabbani called the Musharraf resignation a victory for democracy.

"I think this is perhaps the first time in Pakistan's political history where you have the will of the people prevailing over establishment institutions," the senator said.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Under pressure over impending impeachment charges, President Pervez Musharraf announced that he would resign Monday, ending nearly nine years as one of the United States’ most important allies in the campaign against terrorism.

Speaking on television from his presidential office here at 1 p.m., Mr. Musharraf, dressed in a gray suit and tie, said that after consulting with his aides, “I have decided to resign today.” He said he was putting national interest above “personal bravado.”

“Whether I win or lose the impeachment, the nation will lose,” he said, adding that he was not prepared to put the office of the presidency through the impeachment process.

Mr. Musharraf said the governing coalition, which has pushed for impeachment, had tried to “turn lies into truths.”

His rivals won February parliamentary elections and have since sought his ouster, announcing impeachment plans earlier this month.

Musharraf, who has been largely sidelined since his rivals came to power, had resisted the mounting calls to quit, even after the coalition finalized impeachment charges against him and threatened to send a motion to Parliament later this week.

Who will ultimately succeed Musharraf is an open question. There has been speculation that both Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, the leaders of the two main parties are interested in the role.
