A lot of people hold this idea that, well, when you die, you die; that's it. Death is a moment — you know you're either dead or alive. All these things are not scientifically valid, but they're social perceptions. How is technology challenging the perception that death is a moment?

Clip Source: www.time.com

Parnia and his colleagues at the Human Consciousness Project announced their
first major undertaking: a 3-year exploration of the biology behind
"out-of-body" experiences

When your heart stops beating, there is no blood getting to your brain. And
so what happens is that within about 10 sec., brain activity ceases —as you would imagine. Yet paradoxically, 10% or 20% of people who are
then brought back to life from that period, which may be a few minutes or over
an hour, will report having consciousness. So the key thing here is, Are these
real, or is it some sort of illusion?

if you look at the mind, consciousness, and the brain, the assumption that the
mind and brain are the same thing is fine for most circumstances, because in
99% of circumstances we can't separate the mind and brain; they work at the
exactly the same time. But then there are certain extreme examples, like when
the brain shuts down, that we see that this assumption may no longer seem
to hold true.

<clipSource>http://www.time.com/time/article/widgets/perma.html?height=90&width=449</clipSource>

The rotating grid illusion

clipped by: rj3sp
clipper's remarks: A surprising optical illusion which is related to temporal aliasing, a visual phenomenon also known as the stroboscopic effect, which accounts for the fact that in video or motion pictures, wheels sometimes appear to be turning backwards.

Clip Source: blog.ted.com

Filmmaker and animator David O'Reilly (who came up with the concept for iHologram) has noticed an interesting property in this animated GIF:

Clip Source: www.davidoreilly.com

In the case of a spinning wheel, what happens is that the wheel might turn, for example, 350 degrees between two frames but your eyes interpret it as -10 degrees. A similar thing happens with your grid. At the periphery, the lines move by more than one grid cell between two frames and the resulting visible motion is “snapped” to the smallest possible motion. The correct way to prevent such artifacts is to make sure that the shutter of the camera is open during the full interval between two frames, so that motion that is too fast gets blurred.

Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

Temporal aliasing

Tags: optical, stroboscopic, grid, temporal aliasing

<clipSource>http://blog.ted.com/2008/09/rotating_grid_i_1.php</clipSource>

illusion of progress

clipped by: ThirdEyeContact
clipper's remarks: The progress lies instead in real, physical PRODUCTION of wealth, and improvement of the population's general welfare.

Clip Source: www.markjoyner.name

We could choose to simply "discuss" concepts and those discussions may result in nothing at all, no matter how well intentioned. Even worse, discussion without action fixates the mind on discussion and creates the easily accepted illusion of progress.

<clipSource>http://www.markjoyner.name/logs/mj_constructs0.php</clipSource>

GM falls to 1950 levels; European sales stung

clipped by: rmowery
clipper's remarks: I really am debating buying this. ultimate elitist party, the party of CEO and wall street fat cats is really the party of average America disparagingly cast as Joe and Jane six pack, too ignorant and uneducated to notice the phoniness. Ignore the 100000000 bank account, 10 homes and 13 cars, McCain represents the working American. Her rural roots, her lack of sophistication and worldliness, her bare bones education, her plain-spokenness, her moose hunting -- all of these seemed to brand her as a typical American, one of us us. She has even taken to calling herself Jane Sixpack.

This characterization, ludicrous as it may be in a country as diverse as ours, is more than a matter of political aesthetics. As the pageant would be destroyed, so our government has been destroyed.

Clip Source: www.youtube.com

I was already aware of how the 2-party system is used to contain revolution in most "democratic" countries. But I was very impressed with the way that Alex sketched it out in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

It is very important for us all to realise that we are living under a simple but clever system that has been designed to contain revolution whilst projecting the illusion of being a free, fair and open democracy. The 2-party system provides firm support for the elite to implement their agenda from the top down, whilst the ordinary people at the grassroots level squabble between themselves over which political party is the best. In reality, it doesn't matter which of the two parties you vote for because the same agenda will unfold regardless. Hence, both parties are controlled at the very top by the same force.

<clipSource>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTahZE4q90U</clipSource>

Illusion or Evolution

clipped by: AainaA

Clip Source: www.redicecreations.com

The Amazing Holographic Universe

In 1982 a remarkable event took place. At the University of Paris a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th century. You did not hear about it on the evening news. In fact, unless you are in the habit of reading scientific journals you probably have never even heard Aspect's name, though there are some who believe his discovery may change the face of science.

To enable people to better visualize what he means, Bohm offers the following illustration.

Imagine an aquarium containing a fish.
