2012 fears are down for Maya 'Long Count' calendar

Fears about the year 2012 rest on just one of at least three Maya calendar systems unearthed by scholars, the "Long Count," which began on Aug. 13, 3114 B.C.

The Long Count tracks the duration of what the Maya called "great cycles" of time. The cycle we're currently in ends on 13.0.0.0.0, what we non-Maya call Dec. 23, 2012.

"I tell my students it is similar to an odometer," says archaeologist Lisa Lucero of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "After it hits 100,000 miles, it starts again – but there is no new car, nor does the car self-destruct."

Worries about the date rest from a Maya inscription fragment suggesting the date's importance at the site of Tortuguero in Mexico, says archaeologist Kristin Romey, science adviser to Asylum.com. "The only problem is the Maya had Long Count calendar inscriptions mentioning baktuns (millennia) much further in the future at other sites, so 2012 hardly seems the end of the world."

If you think the recession has hit hard where you live, consider the little Northern Illinois town where almost half the working age adults are out of work. It's called Pembroke. CBS2's Mike Parker reports.

Imagine a community so deep in the hole, the government has fired the police force and closed two of three elementary schools. It's happened in Pembroke, a little town of some 3,000 in eastern Kankakee County near the Indiana border.

It's a town where these days, many folks don't rebuild after a fire. The charred remains just sit there.

Payton says the unemployment rate is 46 percent and the median income is just half the statewide figure. Payton says his goal right now is to create jobs in a place where businesses don't seem to want to come, and the young people mostly want to leave.

9 US States Join California in Budget Disaster

With huge budget gaps, increasing unemployment, and extreme foreclosure rates, nine additional states are joining California in the crippling budget deficit club.

According to a report from the Pew Center, nine more states — Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin – are now facing financial problems that are likely to result in higher taxes as well as fewer government jobs and services.

California, which is on track to run an estimated deficit of over $12 billion, is still the worst off. However, the combined economic output and population of all ten states make up more than a third of the US. How they manage their budgetary crises provides useful insight into the whole nation’s poor economic outlook going forward.

(Newser) – California has by no means cornered the market on enormous financial problems at the state level, with a report out today saying Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin are also at tremendous risk. The Pew Center sees widespread unemployment, huge budget deficits, and the ongoing foreclosure crisis as common factors—plus various constraints that keep many of the states from raising taxes.

“While California often takes the spotlight, other states are facing hardships just as daunting,” the Center’s managing director tells the AP. “Decisions these states make as they try to navigate the recession will play a role in how quickly the entire nation recovers.”

Soy estrogens and breast cancer: Researcher offers overview

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Are soy products healthy additions to a person’s diet, safe alternatives to hormone-replacement therapy or cancer-causing agents? The answer, according to University of Illinois food science and human nutrition professor William Helferich, is, “It depends.”

“The resolution of this paradox may lie in the timing of estrogen administration,” Helferich said. Exposure to genistein, an estrogen, before puberty causes mammary gland differentiation. “A differentiated cell undergoes less proliferation and therefore is less likely to progress through the cancer process,” he said. “However, if the estrogen is administered to an animal after the development of an estrogen-responsive tumor, the growth of this tumor will be stimulated,” he said.

Study: Michigan crumbles under outdated tax system

The report quoted Donald Grimes, a University of Michigan senior research specialist, saying he expects new data this year will show Michigan is among the nation’s 10 poorest states.

The report says Michigan’s population is becoming older and less affluent, and its outmoded tax system can’t support state government.

Generous tax exemptions for retirees and businesses, and the exclusion of services from sales taxes, are two reasons for persistent state deficits, according to the report.

Couples can receive up to $110,000 in pension and other retirement income without paying anything to the state.

Last year, the state offered $6.3 billion more in business tax breaks than it collected in taxes.

Joining Michigan and California on the Pew Center’s list of fiscally endangered states are Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

Federal regulators close 9 banks

NEW YORK — Regulators shut California National Bank of Los Angeles and eight other banks as the weak economy continues to produce a stream of loan defaults.

Deposits totaled $15.4 billion at the end of September. The nine banks had 153 offices, which will reopen as U.S. Bank branches Saturday.

clipper's remarks: So we've now seen reports of goosing stimulus job stats in Georgia, Illinois, Wisconsin, California, New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio, New Jersey, Virginia and Texas. (Ed Morrissey at Hot Air has more thoughts on the California story, as well as a round-up of some of the other state reports on stimulus chicanery.) At first the White House was owning up to "persisting errors" in the stimulus jobs data -- but when all the supposed errors seem to create the illusion of more jobs and are widespread from coast to coast, it sure looks like a deliberate ruse to hide the stimulus' clear failings. The White House needs to explain how this is happening before it turns into a full-fledged scandal.

Even more lies, damned lies and stimulus jobs

Earlier this week, we discussed the White House's was claiming the "stimulus saves nine out of every five jobs." Then we noted how the White house was counting stimulus-funded payraises for government workers as jobs saved, because "If I give you a raise, it is going to save a portion of your job," according to a Department of Health and Human Services spokesman. Then we noted the reports of stimulus jobs being overcounted in Illinois and Wisconsin. Now the Sacramento Bee has taken a look at California's stimulus jobs numbers, and guess what?:

Up to one-fourth of the 110,000 jobs reported as saved by federal stimulus money in California probably never were in danger, a Bee review has found.

That total represents more than half of CSU’s statewide work force. However, university officials confirmed Thursday that half their workers were not going to be laid off without the stimulus dollars.

Illinois "Hearsay Law" will apparently be tested at the mini-trial allowing those with whom Stacy Peterson allegedly spoke with about how Kathleen was killed before she mysteriously vanished back in October of 2007. According to the tribune "Before hearsay comments can be admitted, Will County Judge Steven White will rule on whether the preponderance of evidence shows that Peterson killed ex-wife Kathleen Savio in 2004 and whether the hearsay statements are reliable."

Peterson, has claimed since the begining that Stacy Peterson decided to ran away with some mystery man who no doubt lives in a third world country.

EAST ST. LOUIS — City officials seeking a new police chief passed up the former director of the Florida Highway Patrol, who formerly was a top commander of the Illinois State Police, because he is white, two former members of a city board claim.

Wyatt Frazer and Della Murphy allege in a federal lawsuit that they were forced off the Police, Fire and Civil Service Board for their advocacy of a white candidate when the chief's job was open in 2007.

But the plaintiffs' lawyer, Thomas E. Kennedy III, said it was Grimming, and that Parks told his clients "the city wasn't ready to hire a white police chief."

East St. Louis has a 97.7 percent black population, according to U.S. census records.
