Victory of Hamas 'warlords' hampers release of GIlad Schalit

The results of a recent election held for one of Hamas's key decision-making bodies are likely to hinder efforts to free kidnapped IDF soldier St.-Sgt Gilad Schalit, sources in the Gaza Strip told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

The secret ballot was held about 10 days ago for the Shura (Consultative) Council, which is made up of Hamas's senior political and religious leadership and is tasked with discussing all important issues.

The names of the Shura Council members are kept secret, although it is believed that some of them are based in a number of Arab countries.

The sources told the Post the vote resulted in a major victory for representatives of the "young guard" in Hamas, most of whom are affiliated with the movement's armed wing, Izzadin Kassam.

Intel Research Projects Narrow Gap Between Humans and Robots

Intel's Jason Rattner gave the keynote at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2008 and shed some light on projects Intel researchers are working on. Rattner said that Intel's research labs are attempting to make significant changes in the human-machine interface.

One example of how Intel is looking at changing the human-computer interface is with computer systems that can be physically altered by the user depending on how the user needs the device to function.

Intel researchers are looking at methods to make tiny micro-robots -- called catoms -- that could be built into materials able to change shape at the will of the user. Using catoms Intel reports that the case, keyboard, and display of a computer would be able to change from an earpiece when used as a phone, to a large and flat screen and keyboard for web surfing.

The catoms would be less than a millimeter across and would combine computational and mechanical components.

ZPower promises to deliver Silver-Zinc laptop batteries in 2009

ZPower has made a few promises before that haven't exactly panned out, but that apparently hasn't stopped it from making another bold claim at IDF this week, with it boasting that its newfangled Silver-Zinc battery will be rolled out in a "major notebook computer" sometime in 2009. According to ZPower, that battery will provide up to 40% more runtime than traditional lithium-ion batteries and, just as importantly, be far more "chemically stable" than its sometimes explosion-prone lithium-ion counterpart. ZPower also looks to be going the extra mile when it comes to recycling the batteries, with 95% of the battery itself apparently recyclable, and the company offering "financial discounts" to folks when they trade in their old Silver-Zinc batteries.

Following the indictments filed this morning (7 August) in the Ni’lin shooting affair, the Palestinian victim and four Israeli human rights organizations demanded that the military Judge Advocate General suspend legal proceedings against both the lieutenant colonel involved and the soldier who fired the shot. The delay will enable the organizations to examine and consider challenging the decision to charge the two with the relatively light offense of “inappropriate conduct”.

Days after his release last Wednesday, convicted Lebanese Druse terrorist Samir Kuntar told Arab television stations that he plans to earn a master's degree in "military resistance" and reiterated his commitment to kill again.

Kuntar said he was "proud" of killing Israelis, and "Allah willing, I will get the chance to kill more Israelis," in an interview with Lebanon's Future TV, according to a transcript provided by The Middle East Media Research Institute.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), a Washington-based watchdog organization, published excerpts this week of a number of Arab-language interviews with the released prisoner.

Kuntar, who served 29 years in an Israeli prison for his part in killing a father and his daughter as well as an off-duty policeman in Nahariya in 1979, was released with four other Lebanese prisoners on July 16 in exchange for the bodies of IDF reservists Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser.

Inquiry Launched After Film Shows Israeli Soldier Firing Rubber Bullet at Palestinian at Close Range

JERUSALEM - An Israeli human rights group released video footage last night showing an Israeli soldier firing a rubber-coated bullet at close range at a Palestinian man who had already been detained, blindfolded and cuffed.

B’Tselem said it passed a copy of the footage to the commander of the Israeli military police investigation unit and called for an immediate military investigation.

“B’Tselem demanded that the involvement of the lieutenant colonel who was holding the detainee is investigated,” it said. “B’Tselem stressed that members of the security forces are obligated to report unlawful acts. It is even more serious if a high-ranking officer participates in such a whitewash.”

Last night, the Israel Defence Force said an investigation had been ordered: “This was a serious incident in stark violation of the IDF’s rules of conduct and safety.”

(CBS) Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen leaves Tuesday night on an overseas trip that will take him to Israel, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin. The trip has been scheduled for some time but U.S. officials say it comes just as the Israelis are mounting a full court press to get the Bush administration to strike Iran's nuclear complex.

CBS consultant Michael Oren says Israel doesn't want to wait for a new administration.

"The Israelis have been assured by the Bush administration that the Bush administration will not allow Iran to nuclearize," Oren said. "Israelis are uncertain about what would be the policies of the next administration vis-à-vis Iran."

Israel's message is simple: If you don't, we will. Israel held a dress rehearsal for a strike earlier this month, but military analysts say Israel can not do it alone.
