It’s the end of the era of the white man.

I know your head is spinning. The world can feel like one of those split-screen TVs with images of a suicide bombing in Baghdad flashing, and the latest awful market news coursing along the bottom, and an ad for some stool-loosening wonder drug squeezed into a corner.

The jumble makes no sense. It just goes on, like the mindless clacking of an ice-dispenser.

On the globalized treadmill, you drop your eyes again from the screen (now showing ads for gourmet canine cuisine) to the New Yorker or Asahi Shimbun. And another bomb goes off.

There’s a lot of noise and not much signal. Everywhere there is flux and the reaction to it: the quest, sometimes violent, for national or religious identity. These alternate faces of globalization — fluidity and tribalism — define our frontier-dissolving world.

The breaking sound right now is that of the end of the era of the white man.

Hi all, It’s me again. I love talking about IDEs and code editors. This has to me the damn touchiest nerd subject of all-time. I’ve got friends that ONLY write code in vim, while others that swear upon Midnight Commander, and yet others who use nothing less than the full-on graphical all-encompassing-integration IDE (dreamweaver, zend, etc). Well, I’ve seen this blog before, but I think the needs of a web-developer with respect to an IDE/Editor is different from other types of code author’s perspectives. So here they are, may the best editor win!

Though the Julian Calendar was more accurate than what preceded it, it wasn't really as accurate as it needed to be. That's because an Earth year is about 11 minutes short of 365¼ days: It's 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 46 seconds. This was known, more or less, since the second century A.D., but by 1582, the calendar was 10 days out of whack, and Easter was falling too late in the real spring. So Pope Gregory XIII tweaked the Julian Calendar by subtracting three leap years in every 400 (years ending in 00, unless they are divisible by 400).

45 B.C.: Roman dictator-for-life Julius Caesar, alarmed that the calendar is growing out of whack with the seasons, adds an extra day to the month of February every four years.

Caesar consulted with Egypt's top astronomers, who told him the year was 365¼ days long. While he was making the fix, Julius also decided to give his name to the month of July

Although Caesar decreed the new calendar in 46 B.C., that year had 15 months to make up for the accumulated discrepancy. The first add-a-day leap year was 45 B.C.

The new Julian leap day wasn't added at the end of February originally, but on the day preceding the 6th of the calends of March. The Romans didn't count the days of the months from 1 on up, but used an idiosyncratic system of calends, nons and ides -- and we all know what happened to ol' J.C. on the ides of March, 44 B.C.

IDEs and tools for Ext JS 2.0

The Ext 2.0 API is very extensive and remembering all of the functions, properties or configs available is virtually impossible. The API documentation is very thorough, but it would be nice if IDEs would provide code assist options in JavaScript as they do in other languages such as Java and C#. Luckily, there are some IDEs and plugins available that do just that — and also have direct support for Ext 2.0.

Aptana Studio
When it comes to IDEs for JavaScript development, Aptana is definitely hard to miss. I personally use it daily for Adobe AIR development. However, the version of Ext (1.1) bundled with Aptana for code assist is a little outdated.

Spket Eclipse Plugin & IDE
The Spket IDE has by far the most superior code assist for Ext 2.0. It uses the Ext .jsb project file and embedded script doc to build code assist that includes options inherited from base classes and full documentation.

Eclipse plug-in for C++ unit testing with CUTE

Automated unit testing supports high quality of program code, even under inevitable change and refactoring. As a side effect, unit tested code often has a better structure. Java developers are used to unit testing because of JUnit and its tight integration into IDEs like Eclipse. C++ programmers lacked the tool support for easy-to-use unit testing, even though the languages complexity asks for it.
Refactoring and simplifying C++ code without tests is very hard. No longer!
IFS created a simple to use CUTE (C++ Unit Testing Easier) and integrated it into Eclipse CDT similar to JUnit.

What is a compiler?

A compiler is necessary to make your source code (..c, .cpp, or .cc files) into a running program.

Compiler terminology

Compile Colloquially, to convert a source code file into an executable, but strictly speaking, compilation is an intermediate step

Link The act of taking compiled code and turning it into an executable

Build A build refers to the process of creating the end executable (what is often colloquially refered to as compilation). Tools exits to help reduce the complexity of the build process--makefiles, for instance.

Compiler Generally, compiler refers to both a compiler and a "linker"

Linker The program that generates the executable by linking

IDE Integrated Development Environment, a combination of a text editor and a compiler, such that you can compile and run your programs directly within the IDE. IDEs usually have facilities to help you quickly jump to compiler errors.

Introduction

Starting from version 2.0, Spring supports XML Namespaces. The purpose of this article is to discuss the new XML schema based configuration available in Spring 2.0. Familiarity with previous versions of Spring and basic AOP terms is assumed. Spring now supports and recommends usage of XML Schema rather than DTD. As users of previous versions, you might remember using the <bean> tag and its structure being declared in a DTD. Instead, this is now declared in a XML schema (spring-beans-2.0.xsd). Rest assured, the DTD configuration is 100% legal and is fully supported in Spring 2.0. DTD has its limitations and modern IDEs encourage using XML schema to fully utilize features like auto-complete that comes handy during XML authoring.

In the old-fashioned bean style configuration the developer has to know the name of the appropriate factory or proxy beans. Everything is a bean with a proxy or factory class and a different set of attributes.

Ides of March Marked Murder of Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar's bloody assassination on March 15, 44 B.C., forever marked March 15, or the Ides of March, as a day of infamy. It has fascinated scholars and writers ever since.

For ancient Romans living before that event, however, an ides was merely one of several common calendar terms (see sidebar) used to mark monthly lunar events. The ides simply marked the appearance of the full moon.

But the Ides of March assumed a whole new identity after the events of 44 B.C. The phrase came to represent a specific day of abrupt change that set off a ripple of repercussions throughout Roman society and beyond.

Josiah Osgood, an assistant professor of classics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., said: "You can read in Cicero's letters from the months after the Ides of March. … He even says, 'The Ides changed everything.'"
