Barack Obama is not my ideal candidate for president. (In fact, I made the maximum donation to John McCain during the primaries, when there was still hope he might come to his senses.) But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don’t matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama’s books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers.

There's something about Kate Moss that makes people want to create art based on her. So, British sculptor Marc Quinn is ready to unveil his latest creation to the world, a nearly $2.8 million, 110-pound solid gold statue of the supermodel, hyped as the largest such creation built since ancient Egypt.

I thought the next thing to do would be to make a sculpture of the person who's the ideal beauty of the moment.

The sculpture will be on display in the new exhibition at the British Museum which will run from October 4 until January 25, 2009. Well, It seems someone has taken Kate Moss' role as fashion's golden girl rather literally.

It's not a fist time to create art inspired by celebrities, Daniel Edwards did it once! I wonder how much fame will attract if someone make a golden statue and mold Keeley Hazzel's boobs, Eva Mendes's Cuban curves, Megan Fox's cute face or Adriana Lima's brazilian ass.

My senior thesis at the University of Texas was on the conservative intellectual revival in America. Twenty years later, I was invited by William F. Buckley Jr. to join the board of National Review. I later became its publisher.

But today it is so-called conservatives who are cemented to political programs when they clearly don’t work. The Bush tax cuts—a solution for which there was no real problem and which he refused to end even when the nation went to war—led to huge deficit spending and a $3 trillion growth in the federal debt. Facing this, John McCain pumps his “conservative” credentials by proposing even bigger tax cuts. Meanwhile, a movement that once fought for limited government has presided over the greatest growth of government in our history. That is not conservatism; it is profligacy using conservatism as a mask.

As a cause, conservatism may be dead.

I believe it is very much alive in the instincts and predispositions of a liberal named Barack Obama.

Avian flight photography doesn’t have to be an unreachable goal for you. As difficult as it may seem, making consistently good flight images is possible if you practice and keep a few principles in mind.

There are two elements to consider for successful avian flight photography: motor skills and technical skills.

Motor skills refer to quick reflexes, the ability to track the bird and pressing the shutter at the right moment. To practice your motor skills, it would be ideal to find a colony of Gulls where flight is frequent and use a medium telephoto lens to practice tracking them. Super-telephotos will be an additional challenge because of the extremely narrow field of view. If you are using a zoon lens, it’s better to acquire the bird in the wider setting and then zoom in to fill the frame once you have it in focus.

Practice too late and you've forgotten the material and have to relearn it. The right time to practice is just at the moment you're about to forget. Unfortunately, this moment is different for every person and each bit of information. Imagine a pile of thousands of flash cards. Somewhere in this pile are the ones you should be practicing right now. Which are they?

Fortunately, human forgetting follows a pattern. We forget exponentially. A graph of our likelihood of getting the correct answer on a quiz sweeps quickly downward over time and then levels off. This pattern has long been known to cognitive psychology, but it has been difficult to put to practical use. It's too complex for us to employ with our naked brains.

No fountain of joy for council, Lions club

THE water fountain at the entrance to Merriwa Park looks set to become the centre of a tug of war between the Rural City of Wangaratta and the local Lions club.

The fountain, set up by the Lions Club of Wangaratta in 1963, is in a sad state at the moment, and council has ear-marked it for removal.

Council wants to replace it with the "Two Can" jazz sculpture which is currently located at the corner of Ford and Ovens St in front of the soon to be demolished Wangaratta Town Hall.

The current building will be replaced by the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, with no room on the tight site for the sculpture.

Council had identified the Merriwa Park entrance as an ideal spot for the sculpture, and had contacted the Lions club with a view to removing the old fountain.

However, the club is standing on its dig and has told council that it has plans to restore the fountain to its former glory on the current site.

Well, here´s a little trick: go to the midpoint of the Count by subtracting one-half of 5126 years from 3114 BCE. This comes to 551 BCE. The 6th Century BCE was the moment when the Yahwist narrative of Genesis came into rigid formulation under the reforms of King Josiah (ruled 640 - 609), lauded as the ideal ruler in that brutal manifesto of theocracy, Deuteronomy. Between 587 and 537 BCE a large part of the Jewish nation was exiled to the city of Babylon

connecting the events at the midpoint of the Long Count with my thematic overview of the significance of the Count.

Like most online mapping services, Google Maps calculates estimated travel times based on speed limits, not on actual road conditions. And if you live in a busy metropolitan area like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York, you know that you have to more than double the times Google Maps spits out.

Well, a few months ago Google added traffic updates to its maps. And now it looks like the company's done something useful with that information and added a second estimate for driving time to your directions. Type in any two addresses (in limited metropolitan areas at the moment) and Google will tell you how long it should take to get there under ideal conditions, and during rush hour. Of course, there's no way to account for traffic accidents.

Unconditional love in parent-child relationships may not be naturally wired in humans.

Unconditional love is a wonderful ideal. That's why it is so disconcerting to learn that a parent's love has limitations. People are not designed to give endless attention and resources to a child—no matter how much they might want to—because the strategies that allowed our ancestors to pass on their genes sometimes involved setting limits on care and even choosing which of multiple children to invest most heavily in. My father made the (unconscious) decision to work hard for his entire family's future, but not to nurture or bond with a child who came knocking at an inconvenient moment in this endeavor.
