Alaska's high court considers Troopergate appeal

The state Supreme Court scheduled oral arguments on their appeal for 3 p.m. Wednesday and agreed to rule no later than the close of business Thursday.

The appeal is a last-minute attempt to stop Steve Branchflower, the investigator hired by the Legislative Council, from releasing his report as scheduled on Friday.

plaintiffs

allege bias among the legislators who are leading the investigation and argue the Legislative Council lacks the authority to order the probe.

The attorney general's office has not joined the appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Nine state officials, including Palin chief of staff Mike Nizich, defied the Legislature's subpoenas and refused to show up for a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. So did the governor's husband, Todd. Legislators said they could be found in contempt when the full Legislature convenes in January, a finding that carries potential jail time.

According to military and defense sources familiar with the missions and U.S. government documents obtained by The Washington Times, the move — billed as a cost-cutting measure — received insufficient government review, violated previous Pentagon directives, may have broken U.S. law and has left the United States less able to track potential threats and the operations center more vulnerable to attack.

Critics say a decision two years ago to move the operations center of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to the basement of an office building on Peterson Air Force Base in nearby Colorado Springs and to disperse other missions at the mountain could undermine U.S. national security.

El 27 de noviembre de 2008, los alumnos de hasta 690 centros educativos de la UE que hayan nacido en 1991 pondrán a prueba su capacidad de traducción en un concurso organizado por el departamento responsable de tal labor en la Comisión Europea. El certamen tiene por objetivo impulsar el uso de lenguas extranjeras en Europa y promocionar el singular arte de la traducción.

¿Quién puede participar?

Todos los centros de educación secundaria de Europa pueden solicitar su participación inscribiéndose el 20 de octubre a más tardar. Poco después se seleccionarán aleatoriamente los centros participantes.

Not since 1984, just before the fall of the Soviet Union, has Russia ventured to launch dozens of nuclear bombers for an exercise in which Tu-95 Bear bombers will fire live cruise missiles. Exercise Stability 2008 will take place Oct.-6-12 over sub-Arctic Russia uncomfortably close to the US state of Alaska, and Belarus.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the exercise is part of a month-long war game described by Russian air force spokesman Col. Vladimir Drik as “practicing the strategic deployment of the armed forces including the nuclear triad.”

As part of the exercise, our sources reported exclusively on Oct. 1, that Russian ships armed with nuclear missiles will dock at Syrian ports Oct. 8, on the eve of Yom Kippur, before continuing to the Caribbean for joint maneuvers with Venezuela.

In May 2009, 23 students will graduate from Fall Creek Academy, one of the city's first charter schools that started in 2002. Many of these students came to our school as sixth-graders but few could pass the ISTEP. In May, nearly all will graduate with at least 15 college credits. Our valedictorian will graduate with a high school honors degree and 30 college credits. She will enroll in a four-year university as a sophomore.

The Supreme Court, opening a new Term Monday, took no action on an appeal testing whether it is unconstitutional to execute a death-row inmate who has a significant claim of innocence. The Court’s 82-page list of orders on pending cases contained no word on Troy Anthony Davis’ appeal, Davis v. Georgia (08-66).

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Spanish prime minister, called an emergency meeting on Monday with the heads of Spain’s biggest banks to discuss the international financial crisis, although his office said no immediate measures would be announced as a result of the talks.

Spain has so far avoided any severe direct impact from the subprime loan crisis that erupted in the US, but its banks are burdened with a rising proportion of bad loans following the crash of the Spanish property market.
