Utterback and Abernathy first used the term 'dominant design' in 1975. 5

Dominant designs may not be better than other designs in the market place, however they will incorparte a minimum required set of key features . The oft cited example of the QWERTY keyboard, specifically designed to overcome limitations on the mechanical typewriter but now almost universally preferred over more logical keyboard designs.6

When a new technology emerges (e.g. computer GUI operating systems) - often firms will introduce a number of alternative designs (e.g. Microsoft - Windows, Apple Inc. - Mac OS and IBM - OS2) . Updated designs will be released incorporating incremental improvements - at some point an architecture that becomes accepted as the industry standard (Anderson and Tushman, 1990) may emerge (e.g. Microsoft Windows).

Dominant Design is a Technology Management concept identifying key technological designs that become a de-facto standard in their market place.

The basic idea of quantum cryptography was worked out 25 years ago by Charles Bennett of IBM and Gilles Brassard of Montreal University, who was in Vienna to see the network in action.

"All quantum security schemes are based on the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, on the fact that you cannot measure quantum information without disturbing it," he explained.

"Because of that, one can have a communications channel between two users on which it's impossible to eavesdrop without creating a disturbance. An eavesdropper would create a mark on it. That was the key idea."

In practice this means using the ultimate quantum objects: photons, the atoms of light. Incredibly faint beams of light equating to single photons fired a million times a second raced between the nodes in the Vienna network.

Each node, housed in a different Siemens office (Siemens has provided the fibre links), contains a small rack of electronics - boxes about the size of a PC, and a handful of sensitive light detectors.

Professor Kevin Warwick, a cyberneticist at the university, said: "I would say now that machines are conscious, but in a machine-like way, just as you see a bat or a rat is conscious like a bat or rat, which is different from a human. I think the reason Alan Turing set this game up was that maybe to him consciousness was not that important; it's more the appearance of it, and this test is an important aspect of appearance."

Can machines think? That was the question posed by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to converse with human interrogators in an experiment that will attempt to prove that the answer is yes.

In the 'Turing test' a machine seeks to fool judges into believing that it could be human. The test is performed by conducting a text-based conversation on any subject. If the computer's responses are indistinguishable from those of a human, it has passed the Turing test and can be said to be 'thinking'.

Red Hat Linux trumps Unix on TPC price/performance test

In a recent independent test, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 Advanced Platform trumped all other operating systems that process more than 1 million transactions per minute -- and at 22% lower cost than its next closest competitor.

The San Francisco-based Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), which performs benchmark tests of database transactions, validated Red Hat's processing of 1.2 million transactions per minute on an IBM System x 3950M2 with the new Intel X7460 Xeon processor.

Total IBM/Red Hat hardware and software costs were $1.99 per transaction, which is 22% cheaper than the next less expensive hardware/software combination, (IBM/AIX,) at $2.81 per transaction and 300% less than the most expensive combination, HP-UX/HP Integrity Superdome, at $8.33 per transaction to exceed the million-transaction threshold.

The test results show that Linux running on x86 chips can scale to high volume with commodity hardware at the most economical price-to-performance ratio

　　新加坡和美国两地科学家联手发现了干细胞分裂和发育的新机制，朝利用干细胞治疗绝症迈进一大步。

　　新加坡基因组研究院（Genome Institute of Singapore）和美国国际商业机器（IBM）的计算生物学中心（Computational Biology Centre）联合展开的研究工作，进一步认识一种可以控制干细胞分裂和发育的微核糖核酸（microRNA）。

　　基因组研究院领导干细胞研究小组的林滨博士受访时说，微核糖核酸是一种非常简单的分子（molecule），间接控制某些特殊蛋白质的形成，这些特殊蛋白质又与细胞分裂的控制有关。这个机制也可以应用在干细胞上，控制干细胞的分化。

　　一直以来，科学家都认定，干细胞是医治一些绝症如帕金森症、阿尔茨海默氏症的曙光，也希望利用干细胞来制造器官衰竭病人所需要的新器官。然而，科学家并不是很清楚如何控制干细胞分化和发育成所要的细胞组织，如脑神经、肾脏等。

　　干细胞则是一种人体最原始的细胞，它可以分化和发育成皮肤、器官、血球等细胞。干细胞存在于成人体内，也存在于受精卵里。

　　林滨博士说，基因组研究院发现了一些控制干细胞分化的微核糖核酸，让IBM利用超级电脑运算出哪几种微核糖核酸最有可能控制干细胞分化。基因组研究院接着进一步以实验证明超级电脑的运算结果。他说：“我们的观察发现，把一个微核糖核酸分子注入胚胎干细胞（embryonic stem cell），就可以促使胚胎干细胞分裂。这是非常振奋人心（的发现），因为只要利用像微核糖核酸这么简单的分子，科学家就能控制干细胞的分裂。”

　　他指出，微核糖核酸的潜能无可限量。由于微核糖核酸能够启动和停止细胞分裂，因此也具备治疗癌症的潜能。癌细胞是因为细胞不断分裂累积而成。

　　他估计，再多三五年，科学家就能真正掌握利用微核糖核酸控制干细胞分裂的机制。

　　基因组研究院和IBM的这项发现已刊登在最新一期的科学期刊《Cell Stem Cell》。

All this in a chapel, and the ironic part: it is used for human genome research!

Bletchley Park gets £57,000 Donation

A bid to save Britain's computing heritage has been given a $100,000 (£57,000) boost by a joint donation from US hi-tech firms IBM and PGP.

The donation will help curate and restore exhibits at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, Bucks.

The two firms said they hoped the money would kick-start further donations from the technology industry to make up an estimated £7m needed to run the museum.

Exhibits include Colossus, thought by many to be the world's first computer.

On NBC’s Meet The Press this morning, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman criticized the chanting of “drill, drill, drill” and “drill, baby, drill” at the Republican National Convention last week, saying that’s just what Saudi Arabia, Russia, Venezuela and Nigeria want to hear Americans focusing on. “They’d be up there leading the chant. They would be saying, ‘this is great, America isn’t sitting there saying, invent, invent, invent new renewable energy,’” said Friedman. Friedman added that he isn’t opposed to offshore drilling, but we shouldn’t be “making that the center focus”:

I’m actually not against drilling. What I’m against is making that the center of our focus

we are on the eve of a new revolution

It would be, Tom, as if on the eve of the IT revolution, the revolution of PCs and the internet, someone was up there standing and demanding, “IBM Selectric typewriters, IBM Selectric typewriters.” That’s what “drill, drill, drill” is the equivalent of today.
