Understanding climate change complacency

Sloan's Sterman sees flawed reasoning at root of problem

Why is the general public not more concerned about the potential consequences of climate change? For many risks, such as the risk of a plane crash, the public is far more fearful than the evidence shows, observes John Sterman, the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. But on the issue of climate, he notes, the situation is just the opposite.

"The science is unequivocal now. It's urgent that we reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions," he says. "That debate is basically over." However, Sterman adds, the public at large remains complacent.

WASHINGTON - August 18 - The Natural Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit today to uncover critical information that the US government is withholding about the risks posed by pesticides to honey bees. NRDC legal experts and a leading bee researcher are convinced that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has evidence of connections between pesticides and the mysterious honey bee die-offs reported across the country. The phenomenon has come to be called "colony collapse disorder," or CCD, and it is already proving to have disastrous consequences for American agriculture and the $15 billion worth of crops pollinated by bees every year.

EPA has failed to respond to NRDC's Freedom of Information Act request for agency records concerning the toxicity of pesticides to bees, forcing the legal action.

Harris and other critics of the deal were concerned that letting Iberdrola both generate power as well as distribute and transmit it — a setup known as "vertical market" power — might give the company too much marketplace muscle. But in the end the commissioners decided it was worth the risk.

"Vertical market concerns and our steadfast policy (against it) weren't taken lightly at all," said commission Chairman Garry Brown. He called the $275 million break for ratepayers "a very significant balance" that offset the risks.

Stern said the new findings vindicated his report, which has been criticised by climate sceptics and some economists as exaggerating the possible damage. "People who said I was scaremongering were profoundly wrong," he told a conference in London.

Suicide risks studied in drugs for physical ills

WASHINGTON – Cody Miller was a high school football player who was allergic to ragweed. Douglas Briggs was a doctor coping with pain from an old back injury.

Both are now dead, hanging victims driven to suicide, their families believe, when drugs prescribed to relieve physical symptoms upset their mental and emotional balance.

Federal drug regulators are investigating to see if the families could be right.

Cody Miller, 15, began using Singulair for his allergies in the summer of 2007. He switched from a different drug after a new doctor assured his mother that once-a-day Singulair was better.

The Miller and Briggs families say their lives were turned upside down without warning.

When the teenager became moody and anxious, his parents were surprised.

About two weeks after he started taking his new medication, he hanged himself in an upstairs closet of the family home in Queensbury, N.Y., about 50 miles north of Albany.

The family is suing Pfizer

Dolphins 'stressed' by sightseers

The RSPCA and environmentalists have warned sightseers trying to get close to a pod of dolphins off south Devon that they could be breaking the law.

About 35 craft surrounded five bottlenose dolphins in Hope Cove in the South Hams area on Friday.

Brixham Sea Watch said the mammals could have been "seriously stressed".

Dolphins are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Anyone recklessly disturbing them risks prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000.

'Warning shot'

Brixham Sea Watch was alerted to the dolphins' plight by a National Coastwatch lookout who was concerned for their welfare.

Sea Watch spokesman Lindy Hingley, who has monitored dolphins in the area for several years, said the creatures would have been "seriously stressed" by the presence of the boats.

RSPCA spokesman Jo Barr said harassing the animals by getting too close was something that was taken very seriously.

Legal cases mount up over schoolyard injuries

CHILDREN are suing schools for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for injuries caused while playing games such as tiggy.

Nearly 100 lawsuits were filed against the State of Queensland for injuries suffered by schoolchildren in the last financial year.

One child is asking the court to award her $280,000 plus interest after she hurt herself playing tiggy (chase) in the schoolyard when she was six.

Another launched a lawsuit last month claiming more than $136,000 for an injury she says she suffered while high jumping during a Sunshine Coast school carnival.

The revelation that schoolyards are becoming fertile ground for litigation follows public outcry over the banning of cartwheels, handstands and somersaults at a north Queensland school and admissions by Education Minister Rod Welford that fear of legal action was partly behind the decision.
