Suomen julkinen talous on tällä hetkellä ylijäämäinen, mikä tuo valtiolle pelivaraa vaikeina aikoina. Rahoitusmarkkinoiden kriisissä myös Suomen pankkien vakavaraisuus ja vähäiset luottotappiot nousevat arvoonsa. Lisäksi euro on vähemmän altis valuuttakurssiriskille kuin markka oli aikoinaan.

Jos Yhdysvaltain talous heikkenee, se heikentää myös Suomen näkymiä, kun vienti alkaa piiputtaa, teollisuustuotanto ja ajan myötä myös työllisyys laskevat. Toisaalta euron heikkeneminen dollariin nähden tukee vientiyritysten kilpailukykyä.

This category, with its vague name and broad reach, is comprised of several sectors, but three in particular, engineering, computer systems and consulting, experienced growth from January to August of this year. Architectural and engineering services added 6,300 new jobs, with a greater need for biomedical, civil, environmental and industrial engineers. Because of the continued and rapid developments in technology, computer systems design and related services added 34,300 positions. Management and technical consulting, which added almost 30,000 jobs, is growing in part due to continuing complexity of business and growing demand for advice in all areas of business planning. The "Q3 2008 Job Forecast" also found that, despite job losses in temporary staffing this year, 31 percent of hiring managers in the broader professional and business services category are expecting to add jobs in the third quarter.

One in four mammals risks extinction

A quarter of the world's mammals are threatened with extinction,

nd the destruction of habitats and hunting are the major causes.

The report, the most comprehensive to date by 1,700 researchers, showed populations of half of all 5,487 species of mammals were in decline.

"Mammals are declining faster than we thought -

Of the 4,651 mammals for which scientists have data, 1,139 species were under threat of extinction. Schipper said the data was far broader than the previous review of mammals in 1996.

"Within our lifetime hundreds of species could be lost as a result of our own actions,"

The report focused on mammals but the situation for some other types of animals and plants is even worse, according to the IUCN,

An updated "Red List" said that 16,928 species, or 38 percent, were threatened out of a total of 44,838.

Financial crisis creams Fonterra's milk powder price

Fonterra is blaming the global financial crisis for the latest big drop in dairy prices.

The dairy giant's latest internet-based auction has returned an average price for whole milk powder of US$2917 per tonne - 11.8 per cent down on the previous sale a month ago.

Fonterra commercial director GlobalTrade Guy Roper said the price drop was expected and continued a decline from an unprecedented high last year.

"The spreading global financial crisis, and concurrent economic slowdown, is curbing demand for all commodities and dairy is no exception," Roper said.

Global milk supply continued to grow, particularly out of the United States.

Fonterra last month cut its forecast payout to farmers for the current season from $7 to $6.60 a kg of milksolids, compared with $7.90 the previous season.

Flows in the Mersey and Severn are likely to be reduced in summer by up to 80 per cent by 2050, according to a study by the Environment Agency. The Thames's flow is likely to decline by up to 50 per cent during the same period.

But Professor Stuart Lane, executive director of the Institute of Hazard and Risk Research at Durham University, issued two caveats. 'First, something that's quite clear in the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report issued last year is that our ability to forecast rainfall precipitation is particularly poor when compared with our ability to predict temperature,' he said.

climate projections from the UK Climate Impacts Programme and shows that by 2050 river flows in winter may rise by 10 to 15 per cent in England and Wales. But river flows in late summer and early autumn could fall by as much as 80 per cent in some places. These patterns would result in a drop in total annual river flow of up to 15 per cent.

Brain Scan Predicts Ketamine Anti-Depressant Effect

Two years ago, Zarate and colleagues reported that ketamine, which targets the brain chemical glutamate, can lift depressions in just hours, instead of the weeks it takes conventional antidepressants, which work through the brain chemical serotonin. Evidence suggests that glutamate likely acts closer to the source of the depression than serotonin, and is not dependant on slower mechanisms, such as the synthesis of new neurons.

Earlier imaging studies with conventional antidepressants had hinted that increased activity of the mood-regulating hub, called the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), signals a better response.

To find out if ACC activity might also forecast response to glutamate-targeting medications, the NIMH researchers imaged the brain activity of 11 depressed patients and 11 healthy participants, using magnetoencephalography (MEG)

for some people ketamine does have side effects, especially at higher doses. Don't use it recklessly.

Dr. Qing-Bin Lu, of Canada’s University of Waterloo, says NASA satellites and laboratory measurements show cosmic rays are the real cause of the seasonal hole in the earth’s ozone layer over the Antarctic.

Dr. LU says the severest ozone loss will occur over the South Pole this month — with another large ozone-triggered hole occurring around 2019.

If the South Pole gets an ozone-hole maximum in the coming weeks, it will strengthen the case for cosmic rays, and endorse a Modern Warming driven by solar variations rather than human-emitted CO2.

The solar model is already endorsed by oxygen isotopes in ice cores from both Greenland and the Antarctic, by microfossils in the sediments of nine oceans and hundreds of lakes worldwide, and by cave stalagmites from every continent plus New Zealand.

The case for a solar-driven climate is also strengthened by a drop in global temperatures over the past 18 months

forecast by the sunspot index since 2000, but was not predicted by the global climate models.

Warren Buffett Perfectly Placed for $3Billion GE Play

Warren Buffett sought to capitalise on the woes of global business again yesterday as he announced plans to buy $3 billion of preferred shares in General Electric as part of a $15 billion (£8.4 billion) capital-raising by America’s largest conglomerate.

The group cited “unprecedented weakness and volatility in the financial services markets” for the profits warning and announced a series of moves to bolster its position. These included suspending its share buyback programme and making a forecast that the group would probably not increase its dividend this year, for the first time since the 1970s.

The fund-raising will help GE to retain its AAA credit ratings, which Mr Immelt said remained a top priority for the group. He assured investors that GE continues to “successfully meet our commercial paper needs”.

Shares in GE, which fell by as much as 8 per cent yesterday, recovered after the announcement to trade down about 65 cents, or 2.6 per cent, at $24.85 in afternoon trade.

Bad credit-card debt could be next shot to economy, researcher says

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Credit-card debt is on the brink of imploding and will be the next storm to hit the fragile finance industry, an investment research firm predicted this week.

According to Innovest StrategicValue Advisors, banks will charge off $18.6 billion in delinquent credit-card accounts in the first quarter of 2009 and $96 billion in all of 2009, more than double the research firm's forecast for all of this year.
