Navy charters kite-powered cargo ship to deliver equipment

For the first time, the US Navy is using a new breed of sailing ship to deliver military equipment, a move that can potentially reduce fuel costs by 20 to 30 percent, or roughly $1,600 a day per ship, according to the ship's owners.

The Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) has chartered the "kite-assisted", fuel-saving 400 foot, MV Beluga to deliver Air Force and Army cargo to from Europe to the US.

The MV Beluga uses a paraglider-shaped, SkySails-System, which supplements its conventional, internal combustion engines. The sail is basically a huge, computer-controlled kite that soars 100 to 300 yards into the air, using the wind to tow the ship at the end of a long tear-proof, synthetic rope.

How will the bail-out work?

US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson wants to use the money to buy up many of the dubious mortgage investments.

In return, US taxpayers will gain a non-voting stake in the banks they rescue. So if the banks recover, taxpayers may make a profit.

However, if taxpayers make a loss, then the rest of the financial services industry will be forced to carry some of the costs.

Bank bosses will also see limits placed on their pay. So-called golden parachutes - huge payments to bankers leaving a bank - have been ruled out.

But it is not clear how much the US government will pay for the bad debts, and so how much help will be provided to the banks.

The US government plans to borrow the money from world financial markets.

The legislation gives the Treasury the authority to issue an additional $700bn worth of Treasury securities.

Senator Byrd Rips McCain on Earmarks

clipper's remarks: It takes ear-marks to get back our gas taxes for interstate and highways work. For some reason the federal government taxes at the pump alot but then alots and apportions money to be spent by ear-marks. This is a good example of a necessary and justifiable ear-mark.

Note the republican Congresswoman Capito supported this very big ear-mark too, and West Virginians (and alot of truck lines who move freight through the state, and help pay for the interstates also through tolls) are not complaining.

McCain lost all credibility on ear-marks when he supported the Bailout Bill absolutely loaded with them.

Perhaps McCain's biggest hypocrisy on Earmarks is the enormous earmark spending (he supports) for Israel, instead of for Americans.

SCOTT DEPOT - Presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain "cries and moans about congressional earmarks," but doesn't understand why they're necessary, Sen. Robert C. Byrd said Friday at a ceremony to open part of the new U.S. 35 - a road primarily funded by earmarks.

"He whines that earmarks are an abuse of federal funds," Byrd said of McCain. "He doesn't come from a state where it costs on average $25 million per mile to build roads, and he doesn't understand that the world is simply not flat."

Friday's ceremony celebrated the opening of 2.1 miles of U.S. 35 connecting Interstate 64 to W.Va. 34.

"It has never been easy to secure federal funds for the building of highways in West Virginia,"

Wholesalers charge retailers the maximum amount possible, because they do want to make money. This in turn makes the gasoline sellers want to keep prices as high as they can for as long as they can, to make a dollar or to recover costs. So it appears that they don’t lower their prices until inventories build up and they have to move product.

According to AAA, motorist should continue to see retail gas prices steadily declining over the next week or so. Which has many consumers wondering why gas prices rise so much quicker than they fall? "It is not true that prices rise quicker than they fall. Many times, retail prices lag far behind wholesale prices going up, and vice-versa," said Dan Gilligan, president of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America.

Today John McCain was forced to stop the "hate speech" that Sarah Palin has be gleefully stirring up on his behalf.

There was glimmer of the old John McCain who many used to admire and respect.

This latest Campaign 2008 version is of someone who wants to win at all costs.

Or maybe not. What price Victory, John McCain?

McCain who bills himself as a "Man of Honour" must on some level be sickened and disgusted by the behaviour of some of his most vitriolic supporters.

This glimpse of the old John McCain was a man who could win an election with a true bi-partisan message and some good ideas to get the economy moving that would appeal to middle.

In light of the Bush 2000 vicious attack, it is hard to understand how McCain could condone a strategy where his campaign tried to label Barack Obama a dangerous unpatriotic "outsider" and a "terrorist" by association.

at a campaign rally he stopped one of his most vocal supporters from calling Obama an "Arab"-- maybe even he has had enough of the hate.

Fiscal Disaster in California

The mandatory sentencing craze that has swept the country over the last 30 years did little to cut back the drug trade, but it drove up the prison population and pushed corrections costs to ruinous levels. The process was especially destructive in California, where a federal court has placed the prison system’s dangerously decrepit medical services under a receiver who wants the state to cough up $8 billion to bring that system up to constitutional standards.

The last thing California residents need at this point are new policies that land even more people behind bars and drive up prison spending further. But November’s ballot in California, the birthplace of irresponsible government by referendum, includes two costly initiatives that would do just that.

California voters need to reject Propositions 6 and 9.
