The White Rose, was formed by students at the University of Munich in 1941. It is believed that the group was formed after August von Galen, the Archbishop of Munster, spoke out in a sermon against the Nazi practice of euthanasia (the killing of those considered by the Nazis as genetically unsuitable).

The three members of the White Rose group appeared before the People's Court judge, Roland Friesler, on 20th February. Found guilty of sedition they were executed by guillotine a few hours later. Just before he was executed Hans Scholl shouted out: "Long live freedom!"

Scientists are building a DNA library of the entire planet, a vast index of everything that's alive (including some things that might soon not be). But a recent study cautions researchers to be careful, as a scanning mistake here could have more severe consequences than getting overcharged at the checkout.

The International Barcode of Life is a proposal to index every singe organism utterly and unequivocally (they've got nearly half a million already) - instead of depending on ornithologist's arguments about exactly what constitutes a certain type of beak, every lifeform would be indexed according to a specified section of DNA. Just as you don't need to read an entire book to tell it apart from others, these DNA barcodes would be shorter than (but just as unique to the lifeform as) the full DNA sequence.

"We have schools in Victoria which have banned birthday cakes with candles on them because the children might burst into flames and where soccer has been banned during recess because the kids might be hit in the face by the ball.

"When you do something that's a little bit on the edge, the (lessons) are learnt before you get to an age when the toys you're playing with can potentially kill," he says.

"If they haven't learnt appropriate risk-taking before they're in charge of a motor vehicle, the consequences are often fatal."

Since Clinton left the White House, it's obvious that he and Bush Sr. are the best of friends playing golf together and posing for numerous photo ops.

Is Obama going to go after the vast criminal enterprise Bush Jr. presided over.

What do you call the form of government where the chief executive can break serious laws repeatedly causing grave harm to the nation without consequences of any kind?

On the other hand, can Bush pardon himself in advance for murder? I don't think so.

A two-pronged attack that bombed nuclear facilities and cut off benzene supplies could easily get the US exactly what they want in Iran.

It could destroy any chance of Iran getting the bomb and force Ahmadinejad out of office. It won’t take much to convince the current US administration to come along to this particular party.

So, the world is gearing up for action in Iran. The plan has been made. The warships have practiced. The will is there.

I think Israel will bomb suspected Iranian nuclear facilities and a US-led task force will block the Straits of Hormuz.

All this is likely to happen sometime in the US interregnum period around Christmas. If it does, the oil price will go utterly ballistic.

Up to 40% of the world’s oil supplies pass through the Straits of Hormuz. It is one of the most strategically important waterways in the entire world.

The Americans want to block the Straits of Hormuz to stop Iranian imports of benzene. This will cripple the country’s economy.

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Can't help checking your partner's text messages on the sly? You're not alone, with an Australian survey showing one in three mobile phone users are text message snoops, and the consequences can often be heart-breaking.

The online survey, conducted for telecoms service provider Virgin Mobile Australia, shows that women are more likely than men to check their partner's phone in secret.

It also revealed that 73 percent of these sneaky text checkers have found out things they later wished they hadn't, and 10 percent ended their relationship because of SMS snooping.

After lots of reading, lots of listening, lots of thinking, I now can say that I know global warming is real and potentially devastating. I honestly don't get why some people don't see that.
I know that that most of the people that don't believe aren't stupid or evil. PLEASE stop, take another look, and reconsider the possibility that global warming is happening now and that there will be grave consequences that we need to understand. Some of us on the other side have done that for years. What if you are wrong? You should at least be able to answer that question - I can.

WASHINGTON - More ominous signs Wednesday have scientists saying that a global warming "tipping point" in the Arctic seems to be happening before their eyes: Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is at its second lowest level in about 30 years.

Arctic ice always melts in summer and refreezes in winter. But over the years, more of the ice is lost to the sea with less of it recovered in winter. While ice reflects the sun's heat, the open ocean absorbs more heat and the melting accelerates warming in other parts of the world.

Within "five to less than 10 years," the Arctic could be free of sea ice in the summer, said NASA ice scientist Jay Zwally.

Five climate scientists, four of them specialists on the Arctic, told The Associated Press that it is fair to call what is happening in the Arctic a "tipping point." NASA scientist James Hansen, who sounded the alarm about global warming 20 years ago before Congress, said the sea ice melt "is the best current example" of that.

Cows seem to have a built-in compass.

Researchers say it's no bull - cattle seem to know how to find north and south.

A team of German and Czech researchers studied satellite photos of thousands of cows around the world.

Their report in Tuesday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says most cattle that were grazing or resting tended to align their bodies in a north-south direction.

"The magnetic field of the Earth has to be considered as a factor," the scientists said.

"Of course, the question arises whether humans show also such a spontaneous behaviour," she said, adding, what "consequences does it have for their health."

Two-thirds is close to what the researchers found in their look at 8,510 cattle in 308 pastures. In the study, 60 per cent to 70 per cent of cattle were oriented north-south, which Begall termed a "highly significant deviation from random distribution."
