A New York Story - An Angel From Queens

Who said that New Yorkers were rude and self absorbed? Jorge Munoz proves this stereotype completely wrong. He provides meals for the homeless each and every night. And he doesn't do this at a homeless shelter. He uses his very own home to cook the meals in and his own vehicle to transport and finally deliver them to people in need. He doesn't ask questions of anybody. He doesn't want anything in return. He just helps. And his definition of helping means approximately 70,000 meals served over a 4 year period.

If only every single one of us could live up to the standard that Jorge is setting then America's true capabilities as the ultimate unselfish nation could finally be realized. Watch the video here - A real life "Angel". Or you can click on the video below.

Hatred of slavery drove Darwin ideas

A new book on Charles Darwin says a passionate hatred of slavery was fundamental to his theory of evolution, which challenged the assumption held by many at the time that blacks and whites were separate species.

"Darwin's Sacred Cause" is among the first of dozens of works about the 19th century scientist to appear in 2009, the bicentenary of his birth and 150th anniversary of the publication of his groundbreaking "On the Origin of Species".

Its authors, Adrian Desmond and James Moore, also expect it to be one of the most controversial, because it explores what they call Darwin's humanitarianism and challenges the notion that his conclusions were the result of pure scientific pursuit. "There's got to be reasons why he came to common descent images of evolution when there was no precedent for that in the zoological science of his day," Desmond told Reuters. "It comes out of anti-slavery.

Nine men were handed harsh sentences of eight years in prison after being tried on charges of conspiracy and “unnatural acts,” a term used to criminalize homosexuality, according to their lawyers and gay rights groups here on Thursday.

The men were arrested on Dec. 19 at the home of Diadji Diouf, a prominent gay activist who works with AIDS organizations to prevent the spread of the disease in the largely clandestine gay community in Senegal, according to Jöel Nana, a program associate for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.

Antigay sentiment has been on the rise across Africa in recent years. Nigeria’s Parliament tried to pass a law last year that would restrict the rights of homosexuals to even meet to discuss their rights. Gambia’s president threatened to behead any homosexuals found in his country.

Last year, a group of men were arrested after a magazine printed photographs of what purported to be a gay wedding.

It's commonly argued that the Iraq War had something for everyone; humanitarians got a humanitarian cause, evangelical democrats got to promote democracy, realists got to eliminate chemical weapons, partisans of the "Ledeen Doctrine" got to beat a small country to a pulp, and "national greatness" advocates were able to demonstrate the power and reach of the United States.

Each of these political ends, however, places different limits and emphases on the use of force. Unsurprisingly, these limits do not always agree, and often vary in dramatic fashion. Beating the enemy to a pulp and destroying chemical weapons call for certain military means directly antithetical to humanitarianism or the development of democracy. In Iraq, the inability to describe a single compelling political justification for the war led to a confused, haphazard, and ultimately self-defeating use of military force. The marketing campaign necessary to launching the war ultimately doomed it to failure.

French 'Humanitarianism'

clipper's remarks: Following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert yesterday, President Shimon Peres spoke to the press. “Nobody in this world understands what are Hamas’s goals and why it continues to fire missiles,” Peres said. “This shooting has no point, no logic and no chance.”

I hesitate to say that I understand something about the Middle East that Peres doesn’t, but Hamas’s goals seem clear to me. The first is the destruction of the Jewish state. The second is to make it seem right.

There have been three types of international response to the Israeli military actions against the Hamas rockets. Not surprisingly, Iran, Hamas, and other knee-jerk Israeli-bashers have argued that the Hamas rocket attacks against Israeli civilians are entirely legitimate and that the Israeli counterattacks are war crimes.

What’s to explore? Hamas loves ceasefires. Here’s an idea. Barak doesn’t want the job, fire him and get someone who does.

“There’s no such thing as a ‘humanitarian cease-fire’,” an Olmert aide said Tuesday. “Gaza is not undergoing a humanitarian crisis. We’re constantly supplying it with food and medications, and there’s no need for a humanitarian cease-fire.”

If you want to be kind to the Palestinian people, destroy Hamas. The only reason for a ceasefire would be, much as was done in Fallujah, to give honest people a chance to exit, so you can kill the rest.

Tasers with Video Cameras in Honolulu - [Newsvine Poll]

The police tasers in Honolulu, according to the Honolulu Advertiser, will begin getting equipped with video cameras in response to increasing controversy over how tasers are being used.

Honolulu is moving in the right direction with wanting to keep litigation and malfeasance at bay, but it still remains a question as to whether the general population is aware that tasers are not as safe as propagandized.

Police officials said the move is to show the community how the nonlethal weapons are used, but also to offer some protection to officers and the police department against lawsuits.

With even the verbiage of the Honolulu Advertisers article, it is clear that a majority of the people accept that a taser is a non-lethal weapon, despite numerous claims from medical experts and studies [ not conducted by people associated with taser makers ] to the contrary.

Tasers with video cameras should be a given. But should we stop there?

Hamas confiscates humanitarian aid trucks sent to Gaza from Jordan

At least 10 trucks with humanitarian aid sent to the Gaza Strip by the Jordanian Red Crescent Society were confiscated by Hamas police shortly after the trucks entered the territory on Thursday evening

Eight trucks had food products and another two had medicines.

A spokesman for the Hamas police in Gaza said that the number of trucks was in fact 14 and they would be "delivered to Palestinians in need in the Gaza Strip."

At this point, it would take a mashup of Wittgenstein, Quantum mechanics and LSD to make sense of Google’s various explanations for what it will and won’t censor and why. The fact that the first sentence is entirely contradicted by the third sentence does not appear to have bothered the speaker one bit.

Google in China, for instance, has censored itself to satisfy authorities in Beijing, restricting searcher access to “sensitive topics” like Taiwan and 1989’s Tiananmen Square massacre. In Germany and Austria, Google removes Nazi content in order to comply with national censorship laws.

“This government does not torture people.” Of course, it all depends on what the meaning of “torture” is. The whole point of these memos is to repeatedly recalibrate the definition so Mr. Bush can keep pleading innocent.

Still, the drill remains the same. The administration gives its alibi (Abu Ghraib was just a few bad apples). A few members of Congress squawk. The debate is labeled “politics.” We turn the page.

Call me cynical, but when Laura Bush spoke up last week about the human rights atrocities in Burma, it seemed less an act of selfless humanitarianism than another administration maneuver to change the subject from its own abuses.

But we must also examine our own responsibility for the hideous acts committed in our name in a war where we have now fought longer than we did in the one that put Verschärfte Vernehmung on the map
