Forestry Company Held in Contempt for Misconduct in SPLC Lawsuit

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — An Arkansas forestry company accused of cheating its foreign guestworkers out of their wages has been held in contempt of court for allowing supervisors to threaten workers and spread misinformation about a class action lawsuit filed on the workers' behalf by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

U.S. District Judge William J. Haynes Jr. ordered Superior Forestry Service Inc. to pay for television and radio announcements informing workers of their right to join the case without suffering any retaliation from their employer.

So, we need a bailout plan or economic stimulus plan to get more money into migrant workers' hands so they can send more money home, so they can buy US exports?

The US credit crisis is also claiming victims far away from home. Latin American migrants in the US are sending far less money home than expected. The migrants and their families in their countries of origin are the victims of a faltering US economy. The double threat of job insecurity and inflation means that poverty is now a serious risk.

AUSTIN -- In a dark blue pin-striped suit, crisp white dress shirt, snug red tie and shiny brown dress shoes, El Paso Mayor John Cook sure didn't look like any folk singer.

But he slung one knee over the other, braced his guitar and belted out a couple songs Wednesday night in Austin just as he has in five other cities across the state, playing with a variety of musicians promoting abolition of the death penalty in Texas.

The Ugandan government has announced a major offensive against gays and lesbians in the African country, saying it will prosecute anyone who comes out.

Sex between two people of the same sex already is a criminal offense in Uganda - punishable by life imprisonment - but Ethics and Integrity Minister James Nsaba Buturo told a weekend news conference he does not know of a single conviction.

Buturo said the government is concerned about what he called the “mushrooming” number of gays and lesbians in the country.

Last year Uganda’s leading Muslim cleric called for gays to be rounded up and marooned on an island in Lake Victoria until they die.

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission last year said that it had uncovered evidence that the Bush administration has funded groups in Uganda that actively promote violence and discrimination against lesbians and gay men.

I asked President Museveni to get us an island on Lake Victoria and we take these homosexuals and they die out there

New SPLC Documentary Premieres in Los Angeles

Nearly 1,500 people filled the historic Wilshire Theater in Beverly Hills yesterday to attend the premiere of the SPLC's new documentary, Viva la Causa, which depicts one of the seminal events in the march for human rights — the grape strike and boycott led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960s.

Like all of the SPLC's Teaching Tolerance products, it will be distributed free to classrooms across the nation. An estimated 50,000 teaching kits, which include the film and lesson plans, will be distributed to educators over the next two years.

University of California Workers Protest Poverty Wages

n Saturday. September 27th at 11am, nearly a hundred workers from local UC campuses - including members of UPTE, the University Professional and Technical Employees union- converged in the Oakland hills to make pancakes for newly appointed president Mark Yudof at his Oakland Hills mansion on Woodmont Way. They demanded Yudof come out and explain how he intends to end poverty wages at the University of California.

AFSCME workers at all ten campuses and five hospitals have been in contract negotiations with UC management for nearly a year and even though ninety percent of the workforce is eligible for public assistance, UC executives have not moved.

clipper's remarks: "There was nothing subtle about the undercovers. The guy on the right in the black with glasses approached my black-clad comrade and asked, "hey can I get a quick pictures". The response, "hell no." Then he asked me, "well can you please do me a favor?" To which I responded some of the same and we both pointed our fingers at him to call it out.

Also to note, there was at least one person dressed in all black (hood and bandanna too) who was definitely wearing an ear piece.

There was a woman not in your photos who was wearing black clothing (not bloc style but more plainclothes like, maybe sunglasses too, can't quite remember) who was walking by me, not looking directly but I could tell she had me in the peripheral vision. Camera was held down by her waist as if she were 'just carrying it', but I noticed that the lens was pointed near my face as she was nonchalantly walking. I definitely saw her click the shutter at this point.

On September 2nd in St. Paul, the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) brought together poor and homeless people of every race, background and age, students, social workers, union members, lawyers, religious leaders, artists and others who stand for social and economic justice. The PPEHRC raised their voices in the “March for Our Lives" to demand “Money for Health Care and Housing, Not for War!”

The rally held at Mears Park and the march that followed were heavily infiltrated by plainclothes law enforcement officers.

Jewish settlers clashed with activists of the Rabbis for Human Rights movement near the West Bank city of Hebron on Friday as they protected Palestinians beginning the annual olive harvest.

Israeli police and soldiers grappled with settlers who tried to drive off local Palestinians and international supporters of Palestinian rights in the West Bank.

"This is just the beginning of the olive harvest which will be going on for the next two months," said the executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights, Arik Ascherman.

He said activists were going to 40 Palestinian villages to protect olive growers and uphold their right to work the land, and harvest. They would act "as human shields" if necessary.

A settler woman screamed "Murderer, murderer" at the rabbi, and settlers angrily shouted down any activists trying to explain their aims to TV reporters.

Palestinians say settler harassment often turns to encroachment and eventually seizure of more land in the name of settler "security".

The Statement:
Sen. Joe Biden said at the October 2 vice presidential debate that the United States spends "more money in three weeks on combat in Iraq than we spent on the entirety of the last seven years that we have been in Afghanistan building that country … or six-and-a-half years in Afghanistan."

The facts:
Biden's remark seems to refer to two specific, and very different statistics: U.S. spending in Iraq only on combat operations, not on reconstruction and other activities; and U.S. spending on "building" Afghanistan — presumably, money for reconstruction in that country.

It's important to keep in mind that figures for USAID projects are only a portion of total U.S. spending in Afghanistan. In July, the State Department reported that, since fiscal year 2001, the United States has spent $17.2 billion on security in Afghanistan and $1.3 billion on "governance, rule of law, and human rights" efforts. Some may consider that latter figure part of "building" a society.
