William B. Hoyt’s clear, precise, realistic approach is most often applied to landscapes and seascapes. In the latter you can see the influence of realist giants like Thomas Eakins, a point he makes clear by including a pinned-up print of Eakins’ Max Schmitt in a single scull over the sink in one of his combination interior/landscape paintings, Flat Water.

Likewise, he has painted a small print of Vermeer’s The Milkmaid into a painting of his kitchen he has titled King Arthur and the Milkmaid (the King Arthur reference is to the brand of the bag of flour), Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World in his Lobsters and Champagne; and has Caravaggio’s Baccus tucked in the window in Kitchen in Tuscany.

In fact, it is Hoyt’s interiors that I find most interesting. Though his landscapes have an obvious appeal and are the major focus of his work, the interiors have a stillness and “moment in time” quality that are wonderfully evocative

Buchenwald liberator, American hero dies at 83

James Hoyt delivered mail in rural Iowa for more than 30 years. Yet Hoyt had long kept a secret from most of those who knew him best: He was one of the four U.S. soldiers to first see Germany's Buchenwald concentration camp.

Hoyt had rarely spoken about that day in 1945, but he recently opened up to a journalist.

"There were thousands of bodies piled high. I saw hearts that had been taken from live people in medical experiments,"

The official U.S. military account of the liberation called the camp "a symbol of the chill-blooded cruelty of the German Nazi state," where thousands of political prisoners were starved and "others were burned, beaten, hung and shot to death."

The sentence “The most important single element in the history of Western civilization was Christianity” opens the second chapter of Robert Hoyt’s classic textbook Europe in the Middle Ages. Despite its origins as “a religious system hostile to many of the values and entrenched interests of antiquity,” the paragraph continues, Christianity absorbed and transmitted “the best elements of antique civilization” to the medieval period. After such a laudatory opening, a reader would not expect any startling exposés. But this reader, an undergraduate history student, was startled by the content of the very next page.

The New York Times does have one redeeming quality: its open-minded editorial page. Just last year it ran an editorial by a representative of the Islamic terror group Hamas. As its Public Editor Clark Hoyt explained:

Op-ed pages are for debate, but if you get only one side, that's not debate. And that's not healthy.

However, there are limits:

An editorial written by Republican presidential hopeful McCain has been rejected by the NEW YORK TIMES — less than a week after the paper published an essay written by Obama, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

The paper's decision to refuse McCain's direct rebuttal to Obama's 'My Plan for Iraq' has ignited explosive charges of media bias in top Republican circles.

Dick and Rick Hoyt are a father-and-son team from Massachusetts who together compete just about continuously in marathon races. And if they’re not in a marathon they are in a triathlon — that daunting, almost superhuman, combination of 26.2 miles of running, 112 miles of bicycling, and 2.4 miles of swimming. Together they have climbed mountains, and once trekked 3,735 miles across America.

It’s a remarkable record of exertion — all the more so when you consider that Rick can't walk or talk.

At Rick’s birth in 1962 the umbilical cord coiled around his neck and cut off oxygen to his brain. Dick and his wife, Judy, were told that there would be no hope for their child’s development.

"It’s been a story of exclusion ever since he was born," Dick told me. "When he was eight months old the doctors told us we should just put him away — he’d be a vegetable all his life, that sort of thing. Well those doctors are not alive any more, but I would like them to be able to see Rick now."

Just Google "USA Murder Statistics." The top site to appear will be the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics. Click on it, then go to "Demographic Trends." Click on "Age." For hard numbers on the key demographics, click on the colored graphs.

Run the numbers yourself, based upon the demographic percentages of murders per every 100,000 people. Then look at the actual murder counts.

Know what else you'll learn? In 2005 alone, 8,718 young Americans from the same age group were murdered in this country. That's well over twice as many as the number of troops killed in all our foreign missions since 2001. Maybe military service not only prevents you from committing crimes, but also keeps you alive?

The Times did get one basic fact right: Returning vets committed or are charged with 121 murders in the United States since our current wars began.

Had the Times' "journalists" and editors bothered to put those figures in context - which they carefully avoided doing - they would've found that the murder rate that leaves them so aghast means that our vets are five times less likely to commit a murder than their demographic peers.

The Times' public editor, Clark Hoyt, should crunch the numbers. I'm even willing to spot the Times a few percentage points (either way). But the hard statistics from the Justice Department tell a far different tale from the Times' anti-military propaganda.

In other words, the Times unwittingly makes the case that military service reduces the likelihood of a young man or woman committing a murder by 80 percent.

Yes, the young Americans who join our military are (by self- selection) superior by far to the average stay-at-home

A U.S. Soldier re-enlisted in the Army just hours after being seriously wounded in an improvised explosive attack near Zaganiyah, Iraq, Nov. 13.

Spc. Christopher Hoyt, an infantryman with 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division from Fort Lewis, Wash., suffered severe laceration to his legs and torso when an IED went off near him while conducting a dismounted patrol. Two of his fellow Soldiers were killed in the attack.

Hoyt was rushed to the emergency room at Logistical Support Area Anaconda, where he decided to re-enlist for four more years in the Army.

An American soldier who was seriously wounded during a bomb attack in Iraq on Nov. 13 re-enlisted just hours after the ambush, telling Army officers he still had a job to do, the Army reported Monday.

Spc. Christopher Hoyt, an infantryman from California with the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based out of Fort Lewis, Wash., was injured after an improvised explosive device — or IED — exploded near him while he was out on a foot patrol near Zaganiyah, Iraq.

"He said he wasn’t finished," Hoyt’s battalion commander Lt. Col. Mark Landes said.

Since Friday morning, there have been 1,378 reports about Al Gore, including fourteen by the New York Times (h/t Newsbusters)

In fact, according to LexisNexis, outside of New York's local papers such as Newsday (pictured above), the Daily News, and the New York Post, no major daily bothered reporting Lt. Murphy receiving the Medal of Honor.

And, other than Fox News, which did six reports about Murphy, not one television news organization mentioned it. Not one. (h/t Newsbusters)

Not that this needs mentioning really, but this is yet one more nail in the coffin of Pinch Sulzberger's quickly dying legacy and another black eye on a rag that many Americans line bird cages with. Please Pinch, continue your march toward bankruptcy and irrelevance by ignoring real stories about real Americans, and especially anything good related to the War against Islamofascism.

I hope to see them in Chapter 11 in my lifetime.....
