This posturing makes no sense. There's nothing unfair about horse-juicing, and it's not clear that anabolic steroids are harmful to the animals. As with almost every discussion of doping in professional sports, the case for prohibition is based on an unthinking, puritanical zeal for "natural performance" and bogus readings of the medical literature. But in this case, the lawmakers and industry officials happened to use the wrong arguments to reach the right conclusion. In fact, horse racing is the only major sport that should ban steroids from competition.

Arthritis and the Older Horse - Remedies

There are a variety of home remedies or treatments you can use for your senior horse companion if he is having a lot of pain and inflammation with his arthritis. And several of them can be done at the same time. The thing to remember is that your horse is an individual and may not take too kindly to some treatments, and be just fine with others. Treat them accordingly and go with the flow.

If his joints are really swollen and painful and the Vet has suggested he be confined for a 24 hour or longer period, either use a box stall with lots of cushy hay or a small turn out pen with lots of soft grass underfoot. International Equine Acquisitions Holdings (IEAH) Stables--the partnership that races Big Brown--has taken the first bold step in securing a no-drug policy in racing by announcing Monday that all its horses starting Oct. 1 will race without any medication, with the exception of Lasix, which trainer Rick Dutrow asked that they exclude because several of his horses are bleeders and require Lasix to race.

"We have decided to withdraw all of our horses from medication, except for Lasix," IEAH co-president Mike Iavarone told Blood-Horse. "We're beginning Oct. 1 because the horses should be clear of all substances by that time.

"In addition, we are willing to allow racetracks to do pre- and post-race testing on all our horses, and we will pay all expenses."

Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan suffered minor injuries in a spill in the first race June 21 at Churchill Downs. He was taken to Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville for X rays, which revealed no broken bones or serious injuries, according to his agent Doc Danner.

Bridgmohan, who will turn 29 next week, was riding Vinstar for owner Stonestreet Stable and trainer Steve Asmussen. Vinstar appeared to take a bad step near the sixteenth pole in the six-furlong sprint and Bridgmohan was dropped in the process of trying to pull the colt up.

The rider appeared to have been kicked by a trailing horse as he rolled under the rail. Bridgmohan was taken to First Aid complaining of pain in his left leg and right arm before being transported to the hospital.

Vinstar, a 3-year-old son of Vindication, had to be euthanized after suffering sesamoid fractures in both front legs and a dislocated right front fetlock, according to Lafe Nichols, DVM, the state veterinarian for Kentucky Horse Racing Authority.

Members of a Congressional subcommittee scolded the horse racing industry Thursday for endangering thoroughbreds with lax drug policies and faulty breeding, and said the sport emphasized greed over transparency. The panel is considering endorsing a central governing body for the sport and warned that it could reopen the Interstate Horse Racing Act of 1978 to make that happen.

Everyone agreed the sport had a drug problem.

“We have created the chemical horse,” said Richard B. Shapiro, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board.

U.S. Congress to hold hearing on horse racing safety without Big Brown trainer

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection had been looking forward to hearing from the trainer known for his candour and for methods that were brought into question after his star horse's stunning last-place finish at this month's Belmont Stakes.

Dutrow said he used a legal steroid on Big Brown - although the last dose was given in April - and the horse also ran the race on a quarter crack in the left front hoof in a failed attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years.

The hearing will go on, with much to discuss. An Associated Press survey last week found that thoroughbred racetracks reported more than three horse deaths a day in 2007 and 5,000 since 2003. The impetus for the hearing came when Eight Belles broke down at the Kentucky Derby last month and was euthanized on the track, well before the travails of Big Brown at the Belmont.

The next day the headline read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10.00. This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey, lead it to the plains, and let it go. Next day, the headline in the paper read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE. The Bishop was buried the next day.

A preacher wanted to raise money for his church and on being told that there was a fortune in horse racing, decided to purchase a horse and enter it in the races. However, at the local auction, the going price for horses was so high that he ended up buying a donkey instead. He figured that since he had it, he might as well go ahead and enter it in the races. To his surprise, the donkey came in third!

The next day the local paper carried this headline: PREACHER'S ASS SHOWS. The preacher was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again, and this time it won. The paper read: PREACHER'S ASS OUT IN FRONT. The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the preacher not to enter the donkey in another race. The paper headline read: BISHOP SCRATCHES PREACHER'S ASS. This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the preacher to get rid of the donkey. The preacher decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent.

Congress Calls June 19 Hearing on Racing

According to a June 11 release from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the hearing will look at “commercial breeding practices that emphasize speed and precocity over durability, the prevalence of performance-enhancing drugs and other medications, track surfaces, and maintenance of the tracks.”

The following is a “witness list” for the June 19 hearing, more details of which will be available soon.

Panel II: Sue Stover, veterinarian at the University of California-Davis; Larry Soma, veterinarian at the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Mary Scollay, recently hired as Kentucky’s equine medical director; Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, veterinarian at Colorado State University; and Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

Why Big Brown lost the Belmont

But by forcing Big Brown into a pre-conceived scenario that didn’t fit either his own tendencies or the real needs of the race, Desormeaux effectively threw away the Triple Crown.

Big Brown seemed clearly ready and eager to take the lead in Saturday’s race, and judging from his past performances, we think he could have done so and won. We just don’t think there was another horse in the race who could take him if he ran his own exuberant style.

What he really couldn’t handle was being reined in hard for that first quarter mile as if he had been a naughty schoolboy. Watch replays of the early part of the race and you will witness a wrestling match between horse and rider. We don’t think Big Brown could fathom why he was being treated that way, and in the end, it cost him the race.

We think Dutrow’s silence is contained rage at Desormeaux.
