Giving into these boycotts does nothing but encourage groups, such as this one, to continue to strong-arm major businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians. The American Family Association is calling off a boycott of McDonald’s after the fast-food giant agreed to end its support for the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, a company employee appointed to the chamber’s board of directors has resigned.

McDonald’s incurred the wrath of the AFA after it made a $20,000 donation to the chamber, and Richard Ellis, who until last month was vice president of communications for the chain, was named to the chamber’s
board of directors.

The company at first resisted AFA’s demands that it sever ties with the chamber.

But now in an e-mailed memo to franchise holders, the company said it has dropped ties with the chamber.

"It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald’s remains neutral on same-sex marriage or any ‘homosexual agenda’ as defined by the American Family Association."

"We appreciate the decision by McDonald’s to no longer support political activity by homosexual activist organizations,"

Connecticut) Connecticut’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that gay couples have the right to marry, making the state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions through the courts.

The ruling comes just weeks before Californians go to the polls on a historic gay-marriage ballot question, the first time the issue will be put before voters.

Connecticut’s court ruled 4-3 that gay and lesbian couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry under the state constitution. It was a logical next step for a state that was the first to voluntarily pass laws affirming and protecting civil unions.

"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice," Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote in the majority opinion that overturned a lower court finding.

San Francisco, Oct 5, 2008 / 01:18 am (CNA).- The cultural battle over the identity of the family is taking another turn in California as the Archdiocese of San Francisco's Catholic Charities plans to cut its relationship with an adoption agency that works to place children with homosexuals.

Catholic Charities San Francisco made the decision in July of 2006 to close its adoption services after receiving clarification from the Vatican that Catholic organizations should not take part in the adoption of children to homosexual couples. The archdiocese was then attacked by San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, who threatened to pull public funding from Catholic Charities and questioned its status as a non-profit.

Police are investigating whether an independent federal candidate committed a hate crime by telling high school students homosexuals should be executed.

David Popescu was invited to participate in a federal candidates' discussion at Sudbury Secondary School on Tuesday. He made the comment after a student asked his opinion of gay marriage.

Popescu introduced himself with a public prayer, blaming environmental damage and economic unrest on the wickedness of society. His comments were met with silence as some students grimaced and shifted in their seats.

The crowd jeered and many rose to their feet in protest after Popescu answered another teenager's question on gay marriage.

clipper's remarks: Same-sex unions haven't undermined or destroyed the economy or the noble institution of marriage--it's straight people breaking their marriage vows. And I defy anyone to name one straight marriage that was broken up because of all those gay unions performed.
So why have these homophobes failed to turn more Americans against gays? Because the truth is, deep down, most Americans are fair and tolerant people.
This hate speech will eventually fail just like every other attempt at lasting discrimination in this country has eventually failed because--bottom line--when confronted with the basic choice of equality or inequality, the vast majority of Americans will choose equality.

Last week, we noticed Tony Perkins blaming the current financial crisis on a “breakdown in the family” and the idea that social issues are somehow behind our current economic woes seems to be gaining traction among the Right.

"Marriage between a man and a woman is the norm throughout the world. Google executives should be searching for ways to make the Internet more usable rather than promoting a radical redefinition of marriage.

The religious right is out full-time trying to rev up the hatred of gays and lesbians in order to make sure we do not acquire the same civil rights every other citizen possesses. A proposed amendment to the Arizona state constitution to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples is facing a fierce battle and opponents of the measure say they are confident it will be defeated.

The survey, by PBS affiliate KAET, has found that 49 percent of those polled support the amendment while 42 percent are opposed.

State Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Phoenix), who is leading the fight against the amendment, said the numbers show support is waning.

Sinema said that supporters of the measure have mounted a major campaign but that the opposition is just now preparing its first big ad buy. TV spots will begin running next week.

In 2006, a similar amendment to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions failed when put to voters. The current amendment proposal does not mention civil unions.

Religious leaders across the state are telling their respective denominations to support the amendment.

Senator Seeks Withdrawal of Guilty Plea in Sex Sting

ST. PAUL — A lawyer for Senator Larry E. Craig asked the Minnesota Court of Appeals on Wednesday to allow Mr. Craig to withdraw a guilty plea to disorderly conduct after his arrest in a sex-sting operation at an airport men’s room last year.

Mr. Craig, Republican of Idaho, was arrested on June 11, 2007, at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport by an undercover airport police officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia.

In his sworn complaint, Sergeant Karsnia stated that Mr. Craig had stared at him from outside a men’s-room stall for about two minutes. After entering the next stall, the complaint said, Mr. Craig tapped his foot and swiped his hand beneath the partition separating him from the officer. Those gestures are recognized as signaling interest in a sexual encounter, according to the complaint.
