Boston, MA -- If current levels of smoking and biomass and coal fuel use in homes continues, between 2003 and 2033 there will be an estimated 65 million deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 18 million deaths from lung cancer in China, accounting for 19% and 5% of all deaths in that country during this period.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) predict that the combined effects of these two major factors alone will be responsible for more than 80% of COPD deaths and 75% of lung cancer deaths in China over a 30-year period. But interventions to reduce smoking and household use of biomass fuels and coal for cooking and heating could significantly reduce the number of deaths.

Tags: health

<clipSource>http://cancerfocus.net/smoking_and_solid_fuel_use_in_homes_in_china_projected_to_cause_millions_of_deaths/30708</clipSource>

We Are Sick of "reach across the aisle" to Socialist Democrats

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: "We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK. John McCain came face to face with everything that is troubling grassroots conservatives. We are tired and frustrated with big-spending, big-government programs. We are tired of the corruption in Washington by both parties. We are sick of efforts to "reach across the aisle" to work with socialist Democrats.

This man summed up our concerns perfectly... the socialists are taking over, and we need Sen. McCain said, "Well, I think I got the message." Did he? McCain went on to say how we need to all work together, blah, blah, blah. Working together with Democrats -- acting like Democrats -- is how we got into this mess! Wake up! Fight for conservative values! It's what the country wants and needs.

If I sound like I'm begging, I'm not the only one:

It's time to fight! WASHINGTON, Oct 8 (OneWorld) - The global financial, food, and fuel crises and the negative impacts of climate change pose a severe threat to the world's 37 million uprooted people, and will likely increase their numbers, warned the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Monday.

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/klippety/512/5983B698-4ABF-4871-9040-2BEBE949880B.jpg" alt="[Congolese refugee Kikimba Kambale cares for his daughter as she sleeps on the street in Kampala, Uganda. The Democratic Republic of Congo has one of the highest numbers of IDPs in the world and it is also the site of one of the worst and least recognized humanitarian crises. addressing delegates from the UNHCR's 76-nation governing committee. As
a result, the number of people forced to flee their homes is on the

At the end of 2007, 11.4 million people were living as refugees and 26
million were displaced within their own country -- known as internally
displaced people, or IDPs.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN): An outraged sheriff in Illinois who refuses to evict "innocent" renters from foreclosed homes criticized mortgage companies Thursday and said the law should protect victims of the mortgage meltdown. Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said earlier he is suspending foreclosure evictions in Cook County, which includes the city of Chicago.

The county had been on track to reach a record number of evictions, many because of mortgage foreclosures. Many good tenants are suffering because building owners have fallen behind on their mortgage payments, he said Thursday on CNN's "American Morning."

"These poor people are seeing everything they own put out on the street. ... They've paid their bills, paid them on time. Here we are with a battering ram at the front door going to throw them out. It's gotten insane," he said. read more

<clipSource>http://www.disinfo.com/content/</clipSource>

Coal for Christmas

clipped by: Victoria Barret
clipper's remarks: Slide 27 in this deck by Sequoia Capital shows the extent to which Americans used their homes as ATMs... and won't be able to going forward.

Clip Source: www.slideshare.net

Sequoia Capital on startups and the economic downturn

Tags: consumer spendding, home equity, mortgage, real estate, retail spending

<clipSource>http://www.slideshare.net/eldon/sequoia-capital-on-startups-and-the-economic-downturn-presentation?type=powerpoint</clipSource>

NYT: McCain airs "paint-peeling" anti-Obama ad

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: "calls Mr. Obama a liar, blames liberal Democrats for the sub-prime mortgage crisis, and, in giving them a traditionally Republican label, blames them for pushing 'deregulation.'"
Now check out the "evidence" - partially included in the clip - cited in the ad's print. functions similarly to trees in a forest, providing food, homes and protection
for fish and invertebrates. The most important enemies of these giant algae are
tiny sea urchins, only inches in diameter, which live on the kelp and eat its
tissue. When urchin populations become too large, they can defoliate entire kelp
forests, leaving only barren remains

Enter the sea otter. Otters can eat the spiky urchins whole, making them the

The answer has a lot to do with ACORN — and the critical years of 1990-1995.

Banks merger or expansion plans were rarely held up under CRA until the late 1980s, when ACORN perfected its technique of filing CRA complaints in tandem with the sort of intimidation tactics perfected by that original “community organizer” ,Saul Alinsky.

Clip Source: article.nationalreview.com

‘You’ve got only a couple thousand bucks in the bank. Your job pays you dog-food wages. Your credit history has been bent, stapled, and mutilated. You declared bankruptcy in 1989. Don’t despair: You can still buy a house.” So began an April 1995 article in the Chicago Sun-Times that went on to direct prospective home-buyers fitting this profile to a group of far-left “community organizers” called ACORN, for assistance. In retrospect, of course, encouraging customers like this to buy homes seems little short of madness.

Militant ACORN

At the time, however, that 1995 Chicago newspaper article represented something of a triumph for Barack Obama. That same year, as a director at Chicago’s Woods Fund, Obama was successfully pushing for a major expansion of assistance to ACORN, and sending still more money ACORN’s way from his post as board chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

Through both funding and personal-leadership training, Obama supported ACORN.

CONTINUED 1 2 3 Next >

Tags: acorn, cra, saul alinsky, bank mortgages, minority quotas, clinton administration, housing sec henry cisneros, madeline talbot, james johnson

<clipSource>http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZjRjYzE0YmQxNzU4MDJjYWE5MjIzMTMxMmNhZWQ1MTA=&w=MA==</clipSource>

Peggy Noonan's column

clipped by: keith0718

Clip Source: online.wsj.com

Neither party has clean hands. Or rather, both parties have dirty hands. Here is the truth, spoken by the increasingly impressive Sen. Tom Coburn: "The root of the problem is political greed in Congress. Members . . . from both parties wanted short-term political credit for promoting homeownership even though they were putting our entire economy at risk by encouraging people to buy homes they couldn't afford. Then, instead of conducting thorough oversight and correcting obvious problems with unstable entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, members of Congress chose to . . . distract themselves with unprecedented amounts of pork-barrel spending." That is the truth.

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122359863551021415.html</clipSource>

McCain and Palin Can No Longer Be Excused

clipped by: oscarrob
clipper's remarks: That’s right – evil. Not just wrong. Not just bad. Not just politics. Exploiting otherwise decent people and using their fears, pain and frustration to unleash them on others with different names or different skin colors or different religious beliefs is evil. That’s not what American politicians do. That’s what Adolf Hitler did. And he did it when people were afraid and angry and losing their jobs and their life savings.

Clip Source: aplagueonbothyourhouses.typepad.com

The McCain - Palin Campaign Has Crossed Over to Evil

No longer can we simply dismiss the McCain campaign as “rallying the base” or “politics as usual.” The times have changed. For the worse. Every responsible politician, and particularly John McCain, needs to step back and say “Am I encouraging a mob?” We are in the worst economic times perhaps in 70 years. People are angry and in pain. They are losing their jobs, their homes and their savings. They are looking for people to blame. They still fear for their safety. They are looking for ways to release their frustrations.

John McCain and Sarah Palin, instead of “Country First,” take the “get elected first” approach. They associate their opposition with terrorism here and abroad. They associate him with being “different.” “Do you really know who he is?” the ask. They are encouraging and exploiting the fear, the anger, the frustration and it is getting worse.

What they are doing is evil.

Tags: politics, mccain, palin, campaign

<clipSource>http://aplagueonbothyourhouses.typepad.com/a_plague_on_both_your_hou/2008/10/the-mccain---palin-campaign-has-crossed-over-to-evil.html</clipSource>
