Stadium ready for opening weekend

Indianapolis - The new home of the Colts will get its first test this weekend when high school teams take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Peyback Classic is the first test of what's expected to be one of the nation's premier sporting and convention facilities. Saturday, four more games kickoff before the Colts make their debut at the stadium on Sunday.

"Everything works," said Bob Grand, chairman of the Capital Improvement Board, the city agency responsible for running the $720 million stadium. "Toilets, concession stands, lights, sound, video. Everything works, everything works."

Hundreds of stadium employees and construction workers spent the week preparing. Friday, businessman Forrest Lucas - who bought naming rights for the stadium - helped move another race car into the stadium. All three nights of games, a team of contractors will be in the stadium, ready to fix surprise problems.

"The Kitchen Idea Book" by Joanne Kellar Bouknight (Taunton, 1999, $24.95). It's a great resource, filled with pictures, drawings and layouts.

Also check out the kitchens in your friends' homes. Ask them how their kitchens work for them and what they would change if they could. Visit a few higher-end model homes to see what the pros are doing.

Once you've settled on a few general principles, such as whether to have an island, peninsula or galley layout, take your room dimensions down to a home improvement store and ask the kitchen people there to do a couple of cabinet plans on their computer. It's free, and although they would like you to buy the cabinets from them, you don't have to.

We have three rules for kitchen remodels:

Don't even think about starting demolition of the old kitchen until you have a solid plan for the new one.

You can never have too much counter space.

Big-box, home-improvement stores in Los Angeles will have to set aside space for day laborers under an ordinance passed by the City Council on Wednesday.

When the ordinance takes effect -- the mayor has to sign it, and most city laws take effect 30 days afterward -- it will apply to stores such as The Home Depot that have 100,000 square feet or more, or any structure where 250,000 square feet or more of warehouse floor area is added.

The shelters must be easily accessible and include drinking water, bathrooms, tables, seating and trashcans. The stores may be required to work with Los Angeles police in developing a security plan, according to the unanimous vote by the 15-member lawmaking body.

Francisco Uribe, senior manager of government relations for The Home Depot, said the corporation does not oppose the day laborer centers.

Community Development Department already operates 11 day-laborer sites in the city. Grant funding is used to maintain the facilities at an annual cost of $180,000.

Researchers are competing to meet a challenge from the U.S. Department of Energy: Improve fuel economy 10 percent by converting wasted exhaust heat into energy that can help power the vehicle.

Challenged by the U.S. Department of Energy, researchers at the nation's top automaker, General Motors , are working out the kinks of a technique to convert vehicle exhaust heat into energy that could boost fuel economy by 10 percent, a feat that in GM vehicles alone could save more than 100 million gallons of fuel yearly.

Reaching the goal of a 10 percent improvement would save more than 100 million gallons of fuel per year in GM vehicles in the U.S. alone.

"The take-home message here is: It's a big deal," Yang said.

WHEN Jody Costello and her husband, Don, set out to add 700 square feet to their San Diego hillside home, they thought they knew what they were doing.

They made sure their contractor was licensed with the state and that no complaints were filed against him. They checked his references. They even went to his job sites. But they slipped up when they forked over nearly a third of the job cost upfront.

Under state law, the down payment for home-improvement projects cannot exceed $1,000 or 10% of the price, whichever is less.

The rest of their saga is documented on Jody Costello's website, ContractorsFromHell.com, which she created in 2000 to provide information and resources on home remodeling, hiring contractors and homeowners' rights.

Homeowners have to put on their detective hats," said Costello, whose website gets 10,000 to 15,000 hits a month.
