Legend has it that Joan of Arc was heavily clad in 50+ pounds of embellished armor when she lead the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War. How else could a woman of small stature lead a pack of wounded soldiers into battle without getting her ass creamed, right? In all actuality, it's likely she wore little heavy armor if any, but instead merely chain maille pieces like those at the Maison de Jeanne d'Arc in Orleans, France.

I'm thrilled that the world of fashion didn't have to find itself in the straits of desperation to pay homage to one of history's greatest women for fall of '08. Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures, even if they come in a petite, breast-clad, vagina-toting, "hearing-strange-voices" package ;)

Turkey downplays Ahmadinejad snub of Ataturk's mausoleum

Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was always going to have a problem paying homage to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founding father of modern Turkey and a leader synonymous with secularism.

But in a move that has revived criticisms of its alleged Islamist sympathies, Turkey's ruling Justice and Development party has got around the difficulty by inviting the Iranian leader to Istanbul, the former Ottoman capital, instead of Ankara, the Turkish capital and site of the Ataturk mausoleum.

Ahmadinejad said he was unwilling to go to the late leader's mausoleum in Ankara, a courtesy which protocol demands of all visiting foreign leaders.

As the architect of the modern Turkish state that consciously subjugates Islam, Ataturk was the antithesis of everything the devout Iranian president represents. He was also an ally and role model of Reza Shah, father of Iran's last shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic revolution that brought the theocratic regime to power.

Edgy celebrity haircuts are simply not for civilians. The Rachel worked for everyone in the 1990s because it was long, American and family-entertainment. Extreme crops in esoteric shapes are only for the few - to carry them off, you need not only shoulder bags of attitude, but the clubbing-on-a-Tuesday lifestyle, the right clothes 24/7 and, preferably, icon status.

Russian Gulag Writer Alexander Solzhenitsen Dies At 89

Born to a single mother in 1918 at Kislovodsk in the Caucasus amid the bloody aftermath of the Russian Revolution, Solzhenitsyn was initially a loyal Communist.

But he went on to undermine the regime's moral foundations, his writings energizing dissent at home and in the West.

First though he had to enter the living hell of the Gulag, a vast prison system that stretched from the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea to the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Solzhenitsyn was sentenced to eight years in the camps in 1945 and was to go on to survive cancer and a KGB assassination attempt.

He was released in February 1953, a few weeks before Stalin's death. He spent three more years in internal exile in Kazakhstan, contracted and overcame cancer.

MOSCOW (AFP) — The Russian writer and dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who shone a light on the inhuman world of the Soviet gulags, has died at his Moscow home aged 89.

Recognizable later in life by his flowing beard and ascetic dress, he had been very frail for several years and died of heart failure at 11:45 pm (1945 GMT) on Sunday, his son Stepan said quoted by Itar-Tass news agency.

Solzhenitsyn won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970 after depicting in harrowing detail the Soviet Union's system of labour camps, where he spent eight years from 1945.

He toiled obsessively to unearth the darkest secrets of Stalinist rule and his work ultimately dealt a crippling blow to the Soviet Union's authority.

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev sent the family his condolences.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy paid tribute to Solzhenitsyn, "one of the greatest consciences of 20th century Russia," saying:

I cannot imagine the Head of the Rhodesian Army issuing edicts to Selous Scouts over dress and getting away with it.
Discipline is disciple, but common sense is common sense. If there is an overwhelming response from those doing the job that a matter has to be dealt with in a certain manner, then any reasonable senior rank would take that into consideration.
I was told by an individual that I cannot wear my Rhodesian GSM on parade. My response..."Do you want that finger broken or do you want to clean your teeth from up your arse-hole?"
Word of warning to the Marines. Collective dissent is Mutiny. There are arse-holes out there who would use QR&R's to pervert your desire to give homage to your comrades.

OUTRAGED Marines were ordered to remove their Help for Heroes wristbands at a funeral of a comrade who died in Afghanistan.

They were told the bracelets “weren’t smart enough” and threatened with a £50 fine if they continued to break strict uniform rules.

Yesterday one Marine revealed that the barring of the wristbands – which is at the discretion of commanding officers – was causing “huge upset and divisions” in the forces.

Retiring General Sir Richard Dannatt and Princes William and Harry have been pictured wearing their wristbands in full uniform.

A military source yesterday said: “The issue over wristbands is becoming a sticky one. Some stuck-in-the-mud commanding officers believe they infringe strict uniform rules. Then again, no one is as supportive of the charity as the Armed Forces.”

A monument to the enema, a procedure many people would rather not think about, has been unveiled at a spa in the southern Russian city of Zheleznovodsk.

The bronze syringe bulb, which weighs 800 pounds and is held by three angels, was unveiled at the Mashuk-Akva Term spa, the spa's director said Thursday.

"There is no kitsch or obscenity, it is a successful work of art," Alexander Kharchenko told The Associated Press. "An enema is almost a symbol of our region."

In related news, the head of the Zheleznovodsk Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau committed suicide today…
