Compounded by all this is the fact that Dubai is a hereditary monarchy with no parliament. Ordinary people have no way for their voice to be heard except in the streets and mosques were fury is reportedly growing. A terrorist attack could be carried out by a disgruntled local—but not necessarily. Dubai’s high regional profile makes it a likely target for Al Qaeda, which now seems incapable of launching an attack in the West, and who could see Dubai as an easy chance to kill some infidels. Moreover, since Dubai is the Middle East’s cosmopolitan melting pot, and its experiment with Islamic capitalism could become the blueprint for surrounding Arab states, its failure would have dire consequences for the entire region.

Fashionable restaurants only permit Western clothing and turn away men in Arab costume

"Kingdom of Heaven": A Flawed Masterpiece

In 1935, Cecil B. DeMille made his famous epic "The Crusades" on one of the backlots of Hollywood. What a change in the Ridley Scott film "Kingdom of Heaven" of 2005 with the technical wizardry of a new era! Although it is not a perfect film, it is nonetheless skillfully crafted and well worth the time of any film-goer in our current, troubled age.

At a time when we are at war in the Middle East, the screenplay and dramatic impact of "Kingdom of God" were thoughtful and worthy of serious reflection for any film-goer. I was especially struck by the theme of honor that ran through the film. The actions of the main character of Balian were guided by honor. And the character of Saladin was portrayed as an individual of great moral rectitude.

Scot who inspired Hollywood movie Three Kings dies in Iraq

AN UNSUNG Scots hero whose exploits inspired the George Clooney Gulf War movie Three Kings has died in Iraq.

David McCullie was a United Nations troubleshooter whose humanitarian work took him to some of the most dangerous places in the world.

Soon after Desert Storm in 1991, he took charge of a famous bullion convoy that crossed Iraq to recover gold plundered from Kuwait.

The mission inspired Three Kings - a Hollywood blockbuster about a group of GIs who go in search of stolen gold in Iraq.

David, 57, died of a heart attack at his living quarters in Baghdad.

The dad-of-one, from Perthshire, spent 35 years with the UN, running the logistical side of relief operations. He worked in warzones including East Timor, Libya, Sierra Leone, Iran, Jerusalem and Lebanon.

David, a former Royal Military Police warrant officer, ordered his brother Jack never to tell their mother where he was or what he was doing.

Tatum O'Neal Busted Using Lamest Lines Ever

Oscar-winning actress Tatum O'Neal was busted buying cocaine and crack last night on the Lower East Side. As if it weren't bad enough that she is (a) probably one of the most famous recovering addicts in the world, (b) a mother of three, and (c) 44, which is kind of old to be buying crack (not that there's a right age for crack, but if we had to pick one, it would not be 44), at the time of her arrest, Tatum reportedly used not one but several of the Lamest Lines Used by Hollywood People Getting Arrested.

"When the police approached, she asked them, 'You know who I am, right?' " one source told The Post.

And then! She actually busted out the oft-used Winona Ryder Defense:

"Then she said, 'I'm researching a part — I'm doing this for a part'" as a junkie.

Sigh. We hate to keep harping on this, but at her age, Tatum should really know by now that that line only works in Los Angeles.

LEONARDO DiCAPRIO will re-team with director RIDLEY SCOTT for 'The Low Dwellers,' a dark thriller written by an unknown East Coast insurance salesman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Described as a thriller in the vein of 'No Country for Old Men' and 'A History of Violence,' 'The Low Dwellers' will star Leo as a parolee struggling to assimilate into the outside world when someone from his past pursues him to settle an old score.

Just heard that Matt Damon has signed on to play Jason Bourne in a 4th film in the action-packed “Bourne” series. As many of you know, the first three movies were “The Bourne Identity,” “Bourne Supremacy,” and “the Bourne Ultimatum.”

Female film-makers across the Middle East are hindered by state censorship and competition from Hollywood, yet the power and the variety of their work shine through

A fast-talking street girl in Sana'a. A belly-dance student in Cairo. A village girl lost in the endless plains of rural Turkey. Disillusioned middle-aged émigrées from Damascus. A schoolgirl seized by Iran's religious police. An Algerian housewife trapped in a gloomy French apartment. The female protagonists of the 36 features, short films and documentaries in the Institut Français's festival of films by and about women in the Middle East, "Women's Cinema from Tangiers to Tehran", are as dissimilar as the ten countries in which they were filmed.

The thread that links them all, says the festival's co-curator, James Neil, is the search for freedom.

The up side of this pollution dilemma is that scientists are able to study the movement of ocean currents based on the travels of this objects. For more than 11 years now, oceanographer Curt Ebbesmeyer has been learning about movement on the ocean by tracking the travels of thousands of bathtub toys, reports CBS News Correspondent John Blackstone.

"It's amazing what a duck can teach you," Ebbesmeyer says. "There was one container load of turtles, ducks, beavers and frogs, twenty-nine thousand in a single container that went overboard in the middle of the Pacific," he says.

The small, plastic adventurers were accidentally dumped into the ocean in January 1992. Pushed by winds and currents the ducks were carried to Alaska where thousands washed ashore.

Ebbesmeyer has faith that there are numerous ducks waiting to be found along the East Coast, though none have yet been recovered.

First Years is offering a $100 reward to anyone who finds one of the well-traveled bath toys.

"It's really a critical piece of scientific data," Hollywood says.

There are four times as many Americans living in urban than rural areas. There are four times as many people sucking back coffee in New York city alone than make a living farming. According to the Bureau of Labor, there are just as many people employed in Architecture and Engineering as farming, hell, 3 million people working in Computer and Mathematical jobs. But when one of these "What does America think about culture" pieces comes on, do I ever see a mid-30's software engineer onscreen bitching about having to download BitTorrents of "The IT Crowd"? Fuck and no.
Four million people in the US play World of Warcraft. And yet, do I ever hear:
ANDERSON: We stopped by the gates of Ogrimmar in Durotar, on the east coast of Kalimdor, where one local told us Hollywood just can't relate to the level-grinding life.
UNIDENTIFIED ORC: They've never been back here, questing Razormane or Drygulch Ravine, y'know ... or farming for Peacebloom and Silverleaf. They're out of touch.
No. No I do not.
