Al Hoffman, a top fund raiser for McCain was the head of a group of developers who filed a legal challenge seeking to block the restoration project. At the time of the challenge, Hoffman believed that development of the Everglades was inevitable:

Chandler librarians say they routinely find oddities between the pages of returned books: from cash and lottery tickets to love letters. And patrons rarely come back to claim the stuff.

One of the most common - and unpleasant - discoveries is toilet paper, said Marj Pals, a library aide at the Sunset Branch Library.

Pals keeps a collection of creative and unusual "bookmarks" on display behind her desk in case people want them back. Her wall is covered with greeting cards, personal letters, travel mementos, board game pieces, doilies, playing cards and one recent addition: a list of "karma violations." She also has found combs, deflated balloons and origami creations.

"We see all kinds of things in the book drop boxes, too," Hoffman said. "Sometimes people tape money for fines on the books. We find cellphones and utility bill payments. If they have stamps on them, we drop them in the mail, and sometimes we have even put stamps on them."

No Idaho Republican candidate has benefited from Palin's bump more than 1st Congressional District Rep. Bill Sali. Sali's Democratic challenger, Walt Minnick, was raising more money than Sali. And GOP leaders like Gov. Butch Otter were still unhappy about Sali's role in ousting state party Chairman Kirk Sullivan in June.

But Palin, a University of Idaho graduate, shares Sali's social agenda and appeals to his strongest supporters.

"You hear Sarah Palin talk about the same things that Bill Sali talks about," said Wayne Hoffman, Sali's campaign spokesman.

Sali won the 1st District seat in 2006 by just five points. President Bush won the district in 2004 with 69 percent of the vote. Hoffman said he thinks Republicans will find Sali has a lot in common with the McCain-Palin ticket.

LAKE CHARLES, La. — It was only last February that Brandy Brady met Ricky Huggins at a Mardi Gras ball here. By April, they had decided to marry.

Ms. Brady says she loves Mr. Huggins, but she worries they are moving too fast. She questions how well they really know each other, and wants to better understand his mood swings.

But Ms. Brady, 38, also finds much to admire in Mr. Huggins, who is three years older. He strikes her as trustworthy and caring. He has a stable job as a plumber and a two-bedroom house. And perhaps above all, said Ms. Brady, who received a kidney transplant last year, “He’s got great insurance.”

There is no way to know how often it happens, but lawyers and patient advocacy groups say they see cases regularly.

Stephen L. J. Hoffman, an officiant at a wedding chapel in Covington, Ky., said he was no longer shocked that one of 10 couples cite health insurance as the reason they stand before him.

"You have her make the phone call, you have the bad guys come into the picture and you never have her go to them," said Garrett, a veteran of scores of such undercover deals.
"You arrest them in the park and she's never exposed to the gun or the dope," said Garrett.
In the Hoffman case, police sent her out alone, with only one or two officers trailing her.
The chief concedes she had not received any training as a confidential informant, or CI, before the dangerous mission.
"As far as the training she receives, as far as training for, as a CI, we don't provide training for CIs," Jones told 20/20.

No training. A botched drug sting. A dead 23-year-old college graduate.

But authorities in Tallahassee, Fla., have yet to take any action against the police responsible for an undercover operation that led to the death of Rachel Hoffman, a recent graduate of Florida State University.

Police Chief Dennis Jones, interviewed for tonight's 20/20 broadcast, says he does not accept that his department is in any way responsible for the death of the young woman

"Do we feel responsible? We're responsible for the safety of this community," Jones said, labeling Hoffman a "criminal" because she was caught twice with a baggie of marijuana

"People we use as confidential informants are people that are familiar with the drug trade," the police chief said

her friends say she refused to inform on friends who smoked grass

Instead, say the friends, police pushed Hoffman to work undercover against two men considered much bigger in the drug scene, and to try to buy a gun

Crystal skulls are not uncommon or terribly mysterious. Thousands are produced every year in Brazil, China, and Germany. But there are a handful of these rather macabre objects that have fueled intense interest and controversy among archaeologists, scientists, spiritualists, and museum officials for more than a century.

There are perhaps a dozen of these rare crystal skulls in private and public collections. Some are crystal clear, others of smoky or colored quartz. Some are actual human size and of very fine detail, while others are smaller and less refined. All are believed to originate from Mexico and Central America.

Calif officials: Bureaucracy failed abused boy, 5

LOS ANGELES - The little boy's body was a study in pain. He was covered in cigarette burns, including to his genitals. He couldn't fully open his hand because it had been burned on a stove. His tooth was broken with a nerve exposed. And he had been made to sit in his own urine and feces, authorities say.

As the 5-year-old remains hospitalized by kidney failure brought on from malnutrition, two county supervisors are blaming welfare and law enforcement agencies for missing earlier chances to rescue the child from what police say were months of "unbearable psychological and physical abuse."

As for the 5-year-old, authorities describe him as withdrawn and shy but plays with people he trusts. He has a healthy appetite and began walking over the weekend with a slight limp. His burnt hand is healing well and regaining its range of motion.
