Iranian military convoy rocked by mystery explosion

The explosion took place in the Tehran suburb of Khavarshahar as the military convoy left a munitions' warehouse controlled by the Revolutionary Guards. According to reports received by Western officials, the convoy was taking a consignment of military equipment to Hizbollah, the Shia Muslim militia Iran supports in southern Lebanon, when the explosion occurred.

Senior Revolutionary Guard commanders immediately imposed a news black-out following the explosion, even though it could be heard throughout the capital Tehran, and no details of the incident have so far appeared in the Iranian media.

Iran is believed to have recently stepped up arms shipments to Hizbollah in preparation for any future armed confrontation with the West over its controversial nuclear enrichment programme.

But Western officials yesterday said they had received reports that the explosion took place in Tehran on July 19, and that the Revolutionary Guards had launched an investigation into the causes of the blast.

What is astonishing -- what is not mentioned by the Americans or the Iraqi "government" or the British authorities or indeed by many journalists -- is the sheer scale of the suicide campaign, the vast numbers of young men (only occasionally women), who willfully destroy themselves amid the American convoys, outside the Iraqi police stations, in markets and around mosques and in shopping streets and on lonely roads beside remote checkpoints across the huge cities and vast deserts of Iraq. Never have the true figures for this astonishing and unprecedented campaign of self-liquidation been calculated.

1,121 Muslim suicide bombers have blown themselves up in Iraq. This is a very conservative figure and -- given the propensity of the authorities (and of journalists) to report only those suicide bombings that kill dozens of people -- the true estimate may be double this number.

It turns out that Houssein Zorkot, a 26-year-old Dearborn resident and Wayne State University medical student arrested in a Dearborn park with a loaded AK-47 assault rifle not only resisted officers and had to be tassed to get him under control, but was found with disturbing evidence showing that he (and members of his family) have allegiance to Hezbollah and Ayatollah Khomeini

Hizbollah 'did not use civilians as cover'

In its strongest condemnation of Israel since last summer's war, Human Rights Watch said yesterday that most Lebanese civilian casualties were caused by "indiscriminate Israeli air strikes".

The international human rights organisation said there was no basis to the Israeli claim that civilian casualties resulted from Hizbollah guerrillas using civilians for cover.

Kenneth Roth, Human Rights Watch executive director, said there were only "rare" cases of Hizbollah operating in civilian villages.

"To the contrary, once the war started, most Hizbollah military officials and even many political officials left the villages," he said. "Most Hizbollah military activity was conducted from prepared positions outside Lebanese villages in the hills and valleys around."

Amnesty said more than 1,000 civilians were killed in the 34-day war. Since then, 24 more people have been killed in south Lebanon by explosions of cluster munitions fired by Israel during the war, the group said in a statement.

"Without a full, impartial U.N.-led inquiry that includes provision for reparations to the victims, there is a real danger of history repeating itself," warned Malcolm Smart, director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa program.

"The Security Council should declare and enforce an arms embargo on both Israel and Hezbollah until effective mechanisms are in place to ensure that weapons will not be used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law," Smart said.

Why would all or nearly of them not be Jewish? Why else would they be in a virtual war zone? I feel there must be more intended in your question but I cannot see it. I presume the American Jews were there to serve in the Israeli Defence? Force (IDF)? Back to the double loyalty problem again. How long is it that you have to serve. It certainly was a cushy way of avoiding Iraq until the asswhipping the IDF received from the ragtag band of Hizbollah after the IDF's excursion into Southern Lebanon. Should mean more recruits for the overstretched American forces in Iraq. Don't worry, our EU UNifil forces will guard your borders as usual until you get back. Mainly to stop you murdering innocent women and children.

What are you talking about? ALL deaths bothers me. Christian, Jew, Muslim, you name it, As a godless person, another's religion as no influence on how I mourn their death. Only a RACIST or SECTARIAN BIGOT could think differently. Which boxes do you tick?

Unfortunately, some lives are worth more than others. Rachel Corrie's life was worth 1,000 Palestinian lives. The manner of her death has added hugely to her value. Yet, Palestinians die daily in similar fashion, and the world doesn't notice. Her value as a martyr for peace explains why you feel the need to slander her good name with such bilge. Despite your wrapping your self so tightly with the American flag, I very much doubt if you are a true loyal American.

How could you write such dribble against the good name of one American who certainly died for peace. Shame, shame, shame even if you are not American, or certainly a very disloyal one.
