HIV and AIDS are causing untold human suffering. In some countries, it is also reversing decades of development progress. While the epidemic’s evolution has varied across regions, there is one common denominator: HIV and AIDS are increasingly a disease of the young and most vulnerable, particularly girls. Of the 2.1 million children living with HIV in 2007, 420,000 were children, mainly through mother-to-child transmission.

The challenge now facing UNICEF and partners among the international community, national governments and key stakeholders, is the comprehensive, massive scaling up of interventions to meet the targets of the ‘Four Ps’ and Universal Access by 2010.

Two-thirds of the women in Lashkar Gah's medieval-looking jail have been convicted of illegal sexual relations, but most are simply rape victims – mirroring the situation nationwide. The system does not distinguish between those who have been attacked and those who have chosen to run off with a man.

Sitting among the plastic flowers around his desk, where an optimistic United Nations scales of justice poster competed for space with images of Afghanistan's President, Hamid Karzai, Colonel Ghulam Ali, a high-ranking regional security officer, explained sternly that he supported the authorities' right to convict victims of rape. "In Afghanistan whether it is forced or not forced it is a crime because the Islamic rules say that it is," he claimed. "I think it is good. There are many diseases that can be created in today's world, such as HIV, through illegal sexual relations."

MEXICO CITY — The 17th International AIDS Conference ended here on Friday with a call for the reversal of laws that criminalize and stigmatize groups at risk for H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

“Criminalization is a poor tool for regulating H.I.V. infection and transmission,” Edwin Cameron, a justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals in South Africa, said in a plenary session.

Discriminating against children with HIV in schools

The Disability Discrimination Act makes it illegal to discriminate against people living with HIV from the point of diagnosis. Despite this legal protection, the National Aids Trust has uncovered cases of children being turned away and excluded from schools after their HIV status was disclosed or discovered. There are fifteen hundred children living with HIV in the UK, one thousand of them are aged under fifteen. One mother talks to reporter Felicity Finch about the dilemma of revealing her daughter’s HIV status to school staff. Should parents disclose their children’s HIV status? Jane discusses the issues with Yusef Azad from the National Aids Trust and Clarissa Williams, President of the National Association of Headteachers.

Mount Sinai researchers have developed a new gene silencing technology that could be used to target genes that can lead to the development of certain diseases.

This technology could pave the way for preventing diseases where gene dysfunction plays a role.

By being able to silence certain genes, we may be able to suppress genes that can cause diseases such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, inflammation and diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

In the study

discovered that Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus uses a viral protein to modify host DNA packing chromatin and switch host transcription machinery for viral replication.

Based on this finding, researchers were able to develop a new gene targeting technology that effectively suppresses transcriptional expression of targeted genes in human cells, including genes that are linked to the onset of a number of diseases.

Occult hepatitis B is more common in people with HIV, but occult hepatitis C is rare

Occult or hidden hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was strongly linked to HIV-related immune suppression in a cohort of US women, but occult hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection was rare, according to a presentation on Thursday at the XVII International AIDS Conference.

At the baseline study visit, the researchers screened the women for HBsAg (detectable in 2.6%), hepatitis B core antibodies (positive in 52%), and HCV antibodies (positive in 54%).

At the second time-point, they measured HBV DNA and HCV RNA using the ultrasensitive Roche COBAS TaqMan nucleic acid assay, with a limit of detection of 15 IU/mL for HBV and 11 IU/mL for HCV. At the third time-point, they again measured both serological markers and HBV DNA and HCV RNA.

Blood transfusions give Argentine patients HIV

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Two intensive-care patients contracted HIV after receiving blood transfusions at public hospitals in the Argentine province of Cordoba, a newspaper reported Friday.

An unidentified donor gave blood at a Cordoba city hospital in December, testing negative for HIV, Health Minister Oscar Gonzalez was quoted by Cordoba's La Voz del Interior newspaper as saying.

When the donor returned in May to give blood again, tests came back positive for the virus — but the blood had already been distributed, the newspaper said, citing Gonzalez.

A so-called "window period" of 16 to 22 days can pass between exposure to HIV and the time antibodies can be detected in a standard blood test. During that time, a person can be contagious.

About 120,000 people are infected with HIV in Argentina, Latin America's fourth-most populous nation, which also has the fourth-highest number of cases in the region, according to the U.N.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A woman who has never shown symptoms of infection with the AIDS virus may hold the secret to defeating the virus, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

Infected at least 10 years ago by her husband, the woman is able somehow to naturally control the deadly and incurable virus -- even though her husband must take cocktails of strong HIV drugs to control his.

She is a so-called "elite suppressor," and studies of her immune cells have begun to offer clues to how her body does it, the team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said.

"This is the best evidence to date that elite suppressors can have fully pathogenic virus," said Dr. Joel Blankson, who led the study.

"The feeling was initially that they had defective virus," Blankson added in a telephone interview.

Mindfulness meditation is the practice of bringing an open and receptive awareness of the present moment to experiences, avoiding thinking of the past or worrying about the future. It is thought to reduce stress and improve health outcomes in a variety of patient populations.

"This study provides the first indication that mindfulness meditation stress-management training can have a direct impact on slowing HIV disease progression," said lead study author David Creswell, a research scientist at the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at UCLA. "The mindfulness program is a group-based and low-cost treatment, and if this initial finding is replicated in larger samples, it's possible that such training can be used as a powerful complementary treatment for HIV disease, alongside medications."

There is emerging evidence from other studies that shows that behavioral stress-management programs can buffer HIV declines in HIV-positive people, Creswell noted.

Denver, Aug 13, 2008 / 09:04 am (CNA).- Most English majors choose to do their theses on a novel or particular reading genre; however, Sarah Moran, a senior at Regis University in Denver, Colorado decided to travel to the African country of Namibia to receive first-hand knowledge of the Catholic Church’s response to AIDS.

1) home-based counseling and care including house visits reminding patients to take antiretroviral treatments, helping with chores and encouragement
2) Youth education and prevention through programs and activities
3) Care and support to children and to the vulnerable
4) Voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS

“Instead of putting a band-aid on the problem, they are trying to fight it at its roots,” Moran said describing the center’s approach to fighting AIDS. While many AIDS programs focus on handing out condoms, CAA reaches out to help those infected by allowing “God’s love to enter.” The center works to “create positive preventative care,” Moran said.
