This seems to have been true for all people at all times. Ever since the dawn of history, women and men have wanted to be able to decide when and whether to have a child. These people were given land in the townships of Dalhousie, Lanark, North Sherbrooke and Ramsay. In this book the author outlines the conditions which existed in Scotland at that time, the way in which this group emigration was handled and what the people found when they arrived. A large section of this book is set up as a genealogy. Also included are lists of English and Irish settlers.

Consequences of Deforestation on Easter Island

The history of Easter Island, its statues and its peoples, has long been shrouded in mystery. Some have suggested that aliens marooned on earth planted the statues as signals to their fellow aliens to rescue them. Others have said that the statues were constructed by a great race of guilders that were stranded on the island and built them before being rescued. Still others are convinced that an ancient society with the capability of flight constructed them along with the Nazca lines in Peru. However new evidence based on pollen analysis supports a much simpler theory, that the Easter Island inhabitants destroyed their own society through deforestation.

Easter Island is a prime example of what widespread deforestation can do to a society. As the forests are depleted, the quality of life falls, and then order is lost. The example of Easter Island should be enough for us to reconsider our current practices.

Nobody has denigrated the service of John McCain or his suffering in captivity as a prisoner of North Vietnam, as much as his supporters wish to pretend that someone did.

what is most striking about McCain's attitude toward Vietnam is his insistence that we could have won -- that we should have won -- with more bombs and more casualties.

Very few military historians agree with McCain's bitter analysis

But it is easy to understand why a man who thinks that we should have escalated the Vietnam War after 10 futile years would talk about occupying Iraq for a century. And it is hard to imagine why voters would elect a president who still believes that 60,000 American dead and more than 300,000 wounded in Vietnam were not quite enough.

In the four minutes it probably takes to read this review, you will have logged exactly half the time the average 15- to 24-year-old now spends reading each day.

Such is the kind of recklessly distracted impatience that makes Mark Bauerlein fear for his country. "As of 2008," the 49-year-old professor of English at Emory University writes in "The Dumbest Generation," "the intellectual future of the United States looks dim."

The way Bauerlein sees it, something new and disastrous has happened to America's youth with the arrival of the instant gratification go-go-go digital age. The result is, essentially, a collective loss of context and history, a neglect of "enduring ideas and conflicts." Survey after painstakingly recounted survey reveals what most of us already suspect: that America's youth know virtually nothing about history and politics. And no wonder. They have developed a "brazen disregard of books and reading."

The Uncertain Fate of Toledo's Scott High School

Scott High School alumni and neighbors are passionate about its renovation.

To them, it's about more than saving the four-story brick structure that has stood along Collingwood Boulevard for nearly a century.

It's about retaining an anchor of the Old West End community. It's about keeping a symbol of inspiration for current and future Bulldogs to follow in the footsteps of successful alumni who have walked the same halls.

"It's a landmark, and if you eliminate that landmark, you compromise the makeup of the neighborhood," said Robert Davis, president of the school's alumni association. "When do we stop destroying our history and our landmarks for future generations to enjoy?"

Toledo Public Schools maintains there are no plans to tear down Scott and that was never the intent. But the money is not there for a full-scale renovation that would be required in the district's $620 million Building for Success program that is mostly funded with Ohio School Facilities Commission dollars.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA -- the essential omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid abundant in oily fish -- may help protect stroke patients from suffering a second stroke, a Japanese study shows.

In a study of people with high cholesterol who were taking a low dose of a cholesterol-lowering "statin," researchers found that adding EPA did not reduce the occurrence of a first stroke but did lower recurrence rates in those with a history of stroke.

Certain elements of the British media like to quote from the self-described “anti-fascist” or “anti-racist” organisation, Searchlight.

But who is Searchlight exactly? And just how reliable is that organisation as a source of information for the media?

The public record of Searchlight, and its cousin, “Unite Against Fascism” (UAF) answer both these questions:

They are hardcore, unrepentant Communists; and the lies espoused by Searchlight and its Communist co-travellers have cost the media over a MILLION pounds in damages, after they were sued by the people Searchlight had libelled.

Searchlight certainly shouldn’t be consulted by any responsible media outlet on any aspect of politics, history or current affairs.
