Clintons Launch Campaign Swing for Obama

When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

Once the nation's best known and most powerful Democrats, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states.

clipper's remarks: The Iraq surge (McCain's unique selling point) is a victim of its own success and has dwindled away to an irrelevant footnote, and the front pages are full of a supposed economic catastrophe which the crude rules of politics suggest any fool should be able to hang on the incumbent.

Yet Obama still can't open up a solid lead. After all, why would record numbers of viewers watch the vice-presidential debate if the election's already over?

Meanwhile, the supposedly damaged Republican brand is proving suprisingly resilient. I see one of the two New Hampshire seats that flipped blue in '06 may return to the red fold next month. Where's the blowout?

A lot of the dynamite is well past its sell-by date: Two references last night to Ronald Reagan negotiating with Tip O'Neill. No one remembers who Tip O'Neill is. McCain might as well have been evoking misty watercolor mem'ries of Talleyrand . . . Obama, by contrast, is all future - which is understandable, given his past.

Republicans have cause to be disappointed by last night: As everyone says, Obama wins by not losing. He looks more and more as if he's already the president, while McCain prowling the stage seeking to "connect" looks more and more like Yosemite Sam after the dynamite* failed to go off.

Nevertheless.

Before everyone succumbs to a terminal case of inevitabilititis, it's worth remembering we've been here before. In the last months of the primary campaign, the press kept assuring Hillary fans that Obama's victory was inevitable and the shriller the media Obamaboppers got, the more bluecollar Dems sat on their hands. In the end all the King's horses and all the King's men had to drag the guy across the finish line. You couldn't replay his spectacular victory in slow-motion because it was already slower than any slo-mo technology ever invented.

So we already know there's a huge disconnect between the unstoppable Messianic force promoted by the media and the cooler appraisal by actual voters.

Sarah Palin told Florida's voters on Monday to expect more "blatant lies, drastic exaggerations and other tough talk" from her as she seeks to stop Barack Obamas rise in the polls. Palin declared "I would kill to win Florida!"

For McCain to have any chance of winning the state in November the campaign must back off "issues" and launch a full scale attack on the personal of Obama.

Sarah Palin has been rehashing attacks first launched by Hillary Clinton during the heated Democratic primary. The attacks are targeting Obama's judgment and character. Palins speeches include the unsubstantiated charge that the Illinois senator has close ties to Bill Ayers, a former member of the 1960s-era militant Weather Underground and that Barack Obama is a black moslem ready to hand over the United States to Osama Bin Laden if elected.

Hannity never bothered to raise the issue of former Republican vice-presidential candidate Jack Kemp praising Farrakhan

the media was afraid to bring up the fact that Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell had high praise for Farrakhan when Rendell was mayor of Philadelphia,

never mind the fact that Ayers and Obama were involved in a multimillion-dollar education grant that was funded by a right-wing Republican, media magnate Walter Annenberg. Do you hear any of them castigating this late Republican pillar?

what about McCain serving and working alongside people with virulent bigoted pasts like Sens. Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and Robert Byrd?

Should the self-described maverick who believes in integrity and character have taken the honorable stance of resigning from the Senate to protest these hateful characters serving in the U.S. Senate?

How does McCain explain his howling hypocrisy on the subject? He doesn't. I made repeated inquiries to his campaign aides, which they refused to acknowledge, much less answer. On this topic, the pilot of the Straight Talk Express would rather stay parked in the garage.

That's an odd policy for someone who is so forthright about his rival's responsibility. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

All this may sound like ancient history. But it's from the same era as the bombings Ayers helped carry out as a member of the Weather Underground. And Liddy's penchant for extreme solutions has not abated

Tina Fey reprised her role as Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin during a Saturday Night Live spoof of Thursday's debate.

Rapper and actress Queen Latifah played the role of moderator Gwen Ifill of PBS while cast member Jason Sudeikis spoofed Palin's Democratic opponent Sen. Joe Biden.

This is Fey's third skit parroting Palin's gaffes. SNL opened this season with a spoof of Palin and Sen. Hillary Clinton giving a press conference denouncing sexism in the media.

Several weeks later, Fey mocked Palin's highly ridiculed interview with CBS' Katie Couric.

In the latest episode of Fey's comic crusade against Gov. Palin, Fey spoofed the governor's stance on same-sex marriage, climate change as the "end of days," and being a "maverick."

"But don't think I don't tolerate gay people, because I do, I tolerate them with all my heart," Fey said. "And I know quite a few, too, not personally, but I know of them."

Obama almost lost the primaries when Hillary Clinton discovered his elitism and turned herself into a beer-chugging Rosie the Riveter. The cultural arsenal is about all McCain has left against Obama, and Levin predicted the last weeks of the campaign could look like the last months of the primaries with McCain highlighting Obama's elitism. It's about character and presentation, Levin continued, and while Obama's mother may have been on food stamps, it was while she was a graduate student studying for a degree in anthropology. Gitlin came back hard, saying we should be embarrassed that we don't know more languages, and that there is a difference between being an elite, which Obama is and has earned by virtue of his intellect and accomplishments, and being an elitist, which he is not.
