He could make a beautiful song out of "Filipino", "Bebot" or "Take U to the Philippines". Apl.de.ap, or Allan Pineda Lindo, a Filipino-American member of the hip hop group Black Eyed Peas certainly celebrates his Filipino heritage through his music.

Recently, apl.de.ap has collaborated with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and MTV Asia to promote the Philippines through his music. "I wanted to represent where I came from," said apl.de.ap. "I wanted to showcase all the beautiful spots in the Philippines and invite all Filipino-Americans to come visit the Philippines."

Apl.de.ap, who was born in Sapang Bato, Angeles City in 1974 and moved to the United States at the age of 14 with the help of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, said this is his way of giving back to the country.

Bolivia pyramid archaeological makeover disaster

Eager to attract more tourists, the town of Tiwanaku in the Bolivian Andes has spruced-up the ancient Akapana pyramid with adobe instead of stone, in what some experts are calling a renovation fiasco.

Now, the Akapana pyramid risks losing its designation as a U.N. World Heritage Site, and there is concern the makeover could even cause its collapse.

The pyramid is one of the biggest pre-Columbian constructions in South America and a building of great spiritual significance for the Tiwanaku civilization, which spread throughout southwestern Bolivia and parts of neighboring Peru, Argentina and Chile from around 1500 BC to AD 1200.

According to Paz, who now heads excavation at the site, the town of Tiwanaku hired the UNAR to renovate Akapana to make it "more attractive for tourists," regardless of how the pyramid may have originally looked like.

The archeologist said lower decks are slightly tilted because of the extra weight of the adobe walls, which could lead to the collapse of the pyramid.

9. SUQATRA ISLAND - YEMEN

This enchanting and little known island also known as Socotra is located off the coast of Yemen in the Middle East. Isolated from the rest of the world its plants have evolved into many bizarre shapes and forms that are unknown in other parts of the world. One of the most famous of these is the Dragon's Blood Tree the sap of which is used to make crystals that can be used as a dye or as an alleged aphrodisiac. The plant depicted on the right is the strange Desert Rose (Adenium obesium) but sometimes more popularly called the Elephants Leg Tree. The Island is slowly becoming known to the world and has great potential for eco-tourism as long as the visitors don't do more damage than good. Other species include the Cucumber Tree and the Socotran Fig. Suqatra was listed as a World Heritage Site in 2008.

The incredible bio diversity of Suqatra has been compared to the Galapagos Islands and it is listed as one of the top ten most endangered island ecosystems.

Corregidor Island, damaged by typhoon

Typhoon "Caloy", the summer storm that spoiled the travel plans of tourists in the Philippines in the second week of May, hurt local tourism and caused damages on one of the country's most famous heritage sites.

The Department of Tourism reported that the typhoon, with the international codename "Chanchu", destroyed facilities at the historic Corregidor, a tiny rocky island situated 48 kilometers west of Manila.

"Corregidor, the island fortress that stands as a memorial for courage, valor and heroism for Filipinos and Americans and one of the premier tourist destinations of the country, succumbed to the thrashing winds and heavy rains brought about by typhoon Caloy," the DOT's Office of Tourism Information said.

The three-mile-long island was the last fortress of the combined forces of the Filipino and American troops defending the Philippines against the invasion of the Japanese imperial army during World War II.

The Department of Tourism (DOT), in a press release, said it is preparing to welcome to Philippine shores the world’s only private residential cruise ship.

Operated by US-based management company ResidenSea, MV The World, with some 150 residents and guests on board, is set to sail through the country’s prime tourist destinations including premier beaches in Palawan, Boracay, and historic places in Manila in November of this year.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said: “We are excited to welcome a first rate cruise ship like The World. Our pristine and majestic beaches, heritage sites and shopping haven, well complemented by a fantastic tropical weather and warm friendly people, shall serve as a great treat to its residents and guests.”

“There is more to the Philippines to see and explore. We aim to have other world-class cruise vessels to attract to our shores,” Secretary Durano said.

He noted that nearly a third of electric lighting is directed to the heavens, and thus wasted.

Possible solutions include putting aluminum covers on street lighting to direct the illumination downwards, and using weaker, more energy-efficient lamps, he said.

The public's "right to starlight" is steadily being eroded by urban illumination that is the bane of astronomers everywhere, the International Astronomical Union said on Friday.

The body, which wrapped up an 11-day general assembly in Rio de Janeiro that attracted galaxy-gazers from around the world, argued that authorities should use more unobtrusive lighting in cities and towns.

Such moves would not only free up the night skies to make for easier viewing but also promote environmental protection, energy savings and tourism, it said in a resolution.

"The progressive degradation of the night sky should be regarded as a fundamental loss," the union said.

It asserted that being able to see the stars "should be considered a fundamental socio-cultural and environmental right."
