At least 3 killed in Coast Guard helicopter crash

HONOLULU - An official says at least three U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers were killed when their helicopter crashed in waters about five miles south of Honolulu, and another crewmember is missing.

Spokesman Lt. John Titchen says the search continues Friday for the remaining crewmember. He says the Coast Guard release the names or ranks of the dead crewmembers for another day.

The helicopter crashed at 8:15 p.m. Thursday as the crew was conducting search and rescue drills with a 47-foot motor lifeboat.

Tree lover brings out the chopper

A NEIGHBOURHOOD battle reached new heights yesterday when a Hawthorn resident paid $8000 to have a tree flown into his back yard by helicopter.

And Graeme Alderman plans to send the bill to the bloke over the back fence.

He says his neighbour cut down his old tree.

Mr Alderman said that the neighbour took the liberty of pruning the original 10.5m lilly pilly he planted 25 years ago down to a leafless 2.5m stump.

"He couldn't possibly have thought it was his. It was about 1.8m-2m into my block.

Not wanting to wait 25 years to regain his privacy, Mr Alderman called in Speciality Trees to deliver an established tree.

"It was pretty special. We hadn't organised a helicopter tree drop before," said project co-ordinator Ben Scoble, of Speciality Trees.

The 4.5m weeping lilly pilly cost $3000 to buy, $4000 to fly and $1000 to plant.

It will fill a gaping hole left by an allegedly overzealous new man on the block.

A SOUTH Wales fisherman who celebrated catching a “mini version of Jaws” was airlifted to hospital after the shark tore into his arm.

Steve Perkins, 52, of Penarth, was posing for a picture after landing the 6ft fish off the north Devon coast when it went on the attack and ripped a five-inch chunk from his right forearm.

He and three pals were fishing off Lundy Island, when he hooked the 80lb creature.

“It took us 15 minutes to haul it into the boat and the idea was to pose for a quick picture and then put it back,” he said.

“I was holding it by the nose when it gave me a bit of nip.

“I dropped it over the side and looked at my arm – it looked horrendous.

The carpenter was airlifted by an RAF Sea King helicopter to North Devon District Hospital and later underwent reconstructive surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital after two arteries were severed.

The severed arteries had to be pinned back together, a nerve was reattached and tendons were repaired in the three-hour operation.

Pakistanis furious over U.S.-led border raid

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan is determined to defend its territorial integrity, the country's foreign minister said on Thursday, as anger mounted over a raid by U.S.-led troops on a remote border village.

The pre-dawn helicopter-borne ground assault on the village of Angor Adda on the Afghan border on Wednesday was the first known incursion into Pakistan by U.S.-led troops since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Twenty people, including women and children were killed, officials said, and a new civilian government, more sensitive to public anger than the previous government, summoned the U.S. ambassador to lodge an angry protest.

Foreign Minister Shah Memood Qureshi said the raid was a shameful violation of rules of engagement agreed with U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan.

"We will not compromise on any violation of our sovereignty," Qureshi told the National Assembly.

'Autonomous' Helicopters Teach Themselves To Fly

Stanford computer scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that enables robotic helicopters to teach themselves to fly difficult stunts by watching other helicopters perform the same maneuvers.

The result is an autonomous helicopter than can perform a complete airshow of complex tricks on its own.

The stunts are "by far the most difficult aerobatic maneuvers flown by any computer controlled helicopter,"

The dazzling airshow is an important demonstration of "apprenticeship learning," in which robots learn by observing an expert, rather than by having software engineers peck away at their keyboards in an attempt to write instructions from scratch.

tower has hawk pro parts if it gets hard to find hawk parts check out knetic 50 parts most will interchange [except tail boom &shaft] i'm using knetic side frames swash plate mixer arms ect.converted my hawk pro to ccpm this week using no extra parts test hoverd it cyclic & colective much more responsive gonna try some 3D this weekend will give update

lets see you should pin the dog bone to the torque tube,
make sure the tail gears have the grub screws in the shafts,
glue the inner bearing for the torque tube so it doesn't slide around
same for any bearing race especialy the intermediate shaft
check the tail grips frequently to make sure it isn't comeing apart

especialy the pins on the tail slider.

If you do all these you should have trouble free flying

I really like the hawks, It was my first nitro and its a nice little heli for the price. I like the 20+ min flight times.

Mayor Bloomberg's vision is flawed. But it's typical of the pie-in-the-sky energy "solutions" suggested by those who would rather "go green" than "get real."(Bloomberg looks positively reasonable compared to the Australian engineer who proposed a giant helicopter carrying wind rotors 15,000 feet into the sky, and sending back electricity through a tether wire super-sized extension cord!)

"Helicopter parents" have landed on the highways. Moms and dads concerned about their kids behind the wheel, or alarmed by the statistic that one third of all teens have accidents within their first year of driving, now have another option—short of purchasing a GPS tracking device—to monitor their newly licensed drivers. Steer Straight, a service launched by Massachusetts moms Deborah Smith and Anne London last month, sells bumper stickers similar to those used by commercial truckers that read HOW'S MY TEEN DRIVING? and a monitored phone number to report risky driving. London spoke with NEWSWEEK's Caitlin McDevitt and explained how parents can now learn within minutes about mistakes their teens make on the road. Excerpts:
