John McCain was booed by his own supporters during a rally on Friday after he described Barack Obama as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

Later, McCain was again pressed about Obama's "other-ness" and again he refused to play ball. "I don't trust Obama," a woman said. "I have read about him. He's an Arab."

"No, ma'am," McCain said several times, shaking his head in disagreement. "He's a decent, family man, [a] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about."

World 'to fail' on nature target

The world's governments will fail to meet their agreed target of curbing biodiversity loss by 2010, according to experts questioned by BBC News.

Nearly 200 countries signed up to the target in 2002.

Ten leading conservationists asked here at the World Conservation Congress were unanimous that the goal cannot be met.

Others suggested the target was unachievable even at its inception six years ago.

Last week saw the publication of the Red List of Threatened Species, showing that between a quarter and a third of mammals are at risk of extinction.

It also saw the head of an EU-commissioned review into the economics of biodiversity loss say that degradation of forests worldwide cost the global economy more each year than the current banking crisis.

said that on the worldwide basis there was absolutely no chance of achieving it.

"We don't have many measures of biodiversity at a global level, but there are a few," she said.

Unveiled: Robogirl - the 'most human-like robot ever created'

Japanese researchers have created a life-like robot, based on a five-year-old girl.

The robogirl, Repliee R-1, looks, moves and interacts like a human, and has silicone skin that feels almost human to the touch.

The robot can blink, look around and even nod its head. It has pigtails, which have inspired comparisons with the boy robot David in Steven Spielberg's 2001 hit Artificial Intelligence.

The team at Osaka University's robotics department, which created Repliee R-1, claim it is the most human-like robot suit ever created.

They hope that the life-like features will put people at ease, and make them more likely to interact with a robot.

Two weeks ago, 36-year-old Hilary Lister set off from the coast of England for a solo sailboat ride through the British Isles, which will take as long as three months to complete.

It sounds like enough of a challenge already – but you haven't heard half of it: Lister, who is quadriplegic, cannot move any part of her body except for her head, eyes, and mouth. Instead of directing the sailboat by hand, she's using a "sip-and-puff" system, in which she blows into a series of straws in order to move the sails and control the boat's movement.

Though Lister's got the sailboat to herself, she's not entirely on her own: She's got a crew following her on another boat, which generally stays about a quarter of a mile away. The crew members help her eat food and use the bathroom, and can keep on eye on her to make sure she's safe at all times.

Sailing may seem like a strange activity for a quadriplegic to take on alone, but Lister claims the hobby has saved her life.

the rising civilian death toll and the decaying economy proved a profitable recipe for the Taliban, who recruited significant numbers of new fighters.

They also won the sympathy of Afghans

This last surge, little noted by the media, failed miserably, but Washington is now planning another one, even as Afghanistan slips away. More boots on the ground, though, will do little to address the real causes of this country's unfolding tragedy.
