IBM Concentrator PhotoVoltaic (CPV) Solar Power Research Breakthrough

IBM has leveraged their computer-chip cooling know-how into a highly effective solar concentrator design.

The cooling part of IBMs' design is the cool part: something no other designer has access to, presumably.

The trick lies in IBM’s ability to cool the tiny solar cell. Concentrating the equivalent of 2000 suns on such a small area generates enough heat to melt stainless steel, something the researchers experienced first hand in their experiments. But by borrowing innovations from its own R&D in cooling computer chips, the team was able to cool the solar cell from greater than 1600 degrees Celsius to just 85 degrees Celsius.

their liquid metal cooling interface is able to transfer heat from the solar cell to a copper cooling plate much more efficiently than anything else available today.

Moscow's decision to recognize Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia has made it clear that the current Russian leadership places no great value on ties with the West. That, at least, seems to be the tenor of the response by world leaders to Tuesday's announcement by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Still, despite the harsh words, there seems little the West can do to confront a confrontational Moscow.

Medvedev said on Tuesday that Georgia had forced Russia's hand by trying to reassert control over the two regions, both of which had run their own affairs since wars with Tbilisi in the early 1990s. Georgian troops launched an attack on South Ossetia on Aug. 7 but were quickly forced out of the region by a huge Russian counter-attack which then pushed deep into Georgia proper.

Why Does Hot Water Sometimes Feel Cold?

Neurologists call instances when these spots send the “wrong” signal in response to a stimulus paradoxical cold and paradoxical warmth. If you want to try another experiment (and you still trust me after the hot water thing), grab a pen and lightly poke the point around between your knuckles. In some spots it will feel cold, in some it will feel warm.

Of course, when you run your hand under hot water, the water touches both warm and cold spots. In cases like this, where the stimulus is strong enough, the receptors get confused and sometimes the wrong signal gets sent to the brain, even though both temperature receptors are being stimulated. Sometimes it only takes a second for things to correct themselves; sometimes it takes a few minutes.

Feeling Spots

Our hands have a mess of sensory receptors that all receive different sensations. These receptors send signals to the brain to help us make sense of what we’re touching. We’ve got some receptors that receive sensations of cold (cold spots) and others that receive warmth (warm spots).

Neither of these temperature receptors pull double-duty. If you touch a cold spot with something hot, it’s still going to do what it’s supposed to do: send a cold signal.

Canned goods often become lost in the far reaches of corner cabinets, but this slide-out drawer transforms those dark recesses into usable space. This blind corner unit, which includes four baskets, moves on heavy-duty ball-bearing slides. The first tug brings out half the unit, which slides sideways (to the left in photo) to make way for the second half.

Chrome baskets and pull handle have a platinum finish. It's available in two sizes -- 15" wide by 20" tall or 27" tall -- and with left or right hand access. Minimum cabinet depth is 23". Price is $625 (20" tall) or $687.50 (27" tall). (November 2004)

he Recipe:

600g spelt flour (can be 1/2 white and 1/2 wholemeal or whatever proportions you like)
1 sachet fast action yeast
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
500ml warm water
2 teaspoons sunflower oil

By hand mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl, make a well, pour in oil and enough water to make a stiff dough.
Cover the dough with cling film and allow to double in size.
Turn onto a floured board and shape in to a smooth ball, divide in half and shape each half.
Place both halves into a 700g pre seasoned bread tin and allow to double in size.
Place in a preheated oven at 210C or the equivalent and cook for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

Cindy Sheehan returned to her Denver hotel room today to find the door unlocked and ajar. She walked in to discover a man working on her phone, screw driver in hand.

Sheehan reported, in an email,

"As I walked toward my room, I noticed that the door was opened with the security bolt blocking the complete closing of the door. I knew immediately that I had not left the door open, and I double checked to make sure it was the right room because, as a frequent traveler, I have been known to forget my room number, but it was the right room.

I was upset at first thinking that housekeeping had made a mistake and left my room open and I was worried that something might be missing. So I walked into my room and bigger than life, there was a man standing by my desk holding the room phone with a screwdriver in his hand!

I asked, "Do you think it was Pelosi's people?" since Sheehan is running against Pelosi, for her congressional seat.

She replied, "Of course, I don't know."
