The shooting part of the hunt is fairly quick, usually a brain shot is recommended at close quarters with heavy grain solids from a large bore caliber. When facing the Elephant a frontal brain shot is aimed at the third or fourth wrinkle below the center of the eyes. With a side shot, aim for the area between the eye and the ear hole or directly in front of the ear hole where the hairy knob juts out. A heart shot is a better bet when it is difficult to get in close to the elephant, placed lower down, directly behind the shoulder.

'Bigfoot' fails DNA test

Results from tests on genetic material from alleged remains of one of the mythical half-ape and half-human creatures, made public at a news conference on Friday held after the claimed discovery swept the Internet, failed to prove its existence.

Its spread was fueled by a photograph of a hairy heap, bearing a close resemblance to a shaggy full-body gorilla costume, stuffed into a container resembling a refrigerator.

PALO ALTO, California - Bigfoot remains as elusive as ever.

Results of the DNA tests were revealed in an e-mail from Nelson and distributed at the Palo Alto, California, news conference held by Tom Biscardi, host of a weekly online radio show about the Bigfoot.

Despite the dubious photo and the commercial interests of the alleged discoverers, the Bigfoot claim drew interest from Australia to Europe and even The New York Times.

Hairy Insects Use Bubble "Lungs" to Stay Underwater

Scientists have known since the 19th century that when aquatic insects dive underwater, they trap an air layer similar to a thin bubble around their bodies and use this air supply to breathe.

The new study is the first to describe exactly how the insects' air layers work

When aquatic insects dive, the layer of air forms between their waxy body surfaces and their rough covering of hairs.

The bubble is held to their hairs by surface tension, the same force that allows a leaf to float on a pool of water.

Air pressure inside the bubble is less than that of the surrounding water, allowing oxygen to flow into the air layer and then into the insect's body via spiracles—small openings that ultimately connect to its bloodstream.

For some insects, gases are exchanged across the bubble's surface, with oxygen being absorbed from the surrounding water while carbon dioxide is expelled.

(CNN) -- A policeman and a former corrections officer say that on Friday, they will unveil evidence of what they claim is their biggest capture ever: the body of Bigfoot.

The carcass of the furry half-man, half-ape is 7 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs more than 500 pounds, they say. However, the two are not disclosing the exact location of their discovery in order to protect the remaining creatures.

Whitton and Dyer plan to unveil what they say is DNA and photo evidence of the discovery in Palo Alto, California, in conjunction with a group called Searching for Bigfoot Inc.

A photograph on that group's Web site shows what appears to be the body of a large, hairy creature with an ape-like face, stuffed into a large freezer.

Hunting for Bigfoot has been one of the favourite pastimes of many a hunter for the past few decades. Also known as Sasquatch, the creature is allegedly ape-like and said to inhabit the remote forests of northwest America and British Columbia, Canada. Yet, despite dozens of sightings there is still no definitive evidence that the elusive hairy being exists. Until now.

Orangutans and palm-based biofuel don't mix

Crouching low in a canoe, my sneakers and socks are quickly soaked with river water. A stocky, shirtless park ranger in blue jeans pulls the boat across the river by rope-pulley rigged between trees. When we reach the opposite shore, we climb out of the vessel and walk along the muddy riverbanks and up through the rainforest until we reach a feeding platform. There, park rangers bang loudly on a plastic bucket. They are calling the orangutans.

I have come to northern Sumatra, an island in the Indian Ocean covered with twisting dirt roads and steep green mountains, to report on the orangutans because there isn’t much time. Experts say the world’s 30,000 remaining orangutans will go extinct in 3 to 20 years. The last of the hairy apes live on the islands of Indonesia and Malaysia, where they spend most of their time in the trees, eating fruits and leaves.

It seems as though the situation in Afghanistan might be a little hairy:

BAGHDAD - Nearly twice as many U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan than in Iraq so far this month, marking the lowest death toll of any month since the U.S. invaded Iraq and putting July on course to be the first month in which the American military suffered more casualties in Afghanistan than in Iraq.

Who knew?

It'd be nice if we could send a few boots towards Afghanistan. You know, maybe keep more American soldiers from dying and secure a country from a third-world shadow government that gave sanctuary to terrorists who killed a few thousand people on American soil. Unfortunately, America officially has no troops left:

Australia's top treasury official is taking five weeks leave to look after endangered wombats.

Hairy-nosed wombats are endangered

Ken Henry, treasury secretary and animal conservationist, has warned that hairy-nosed wombats are "on death row".

But opposition politicians - and even wombat lovers - question if now is the time to be thinking about wombats.

Inflation is at a 16-year high, interest rates are up and fuel prices are rising. Mr Henry will also miss a central bank meeting.

For the love of wombats

Mr Henry will be looking after 115 hairy-nosed wombats in an isolated spot in northern Queensland, with no mobile phone coverage and two-and-a-half hours on a rough track from the nearest town.

"There are 10 times as many giant pandas in the world as there are these guys," Mr Henry told Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"This place doesn't stop when I am not here."

Mr Henry's leave will take place during the government's winter recess but he will miss a central bank meeting.

I received in the mail this morning a copy of a DVD titled Southern Fried Bigfoot that, as you will probably deduce from its title, focuses on man-beast reports in the southern states of the U.S.

As soon as I've watched it, I'll be doing a full review that will be posted here and at my Reviews of the Fortean Kind blog early next week.
