Mammoths moved 'out of America'

Scientists have discovered that the last Siberian woolly mammoths may have originated in North America.

Their research in the journal Current Biology represents the largest study of ancient woolly mammoth DNA.

The iconic Ice Age woolly mammoth - Mammuthus primigenius - roamed through mainland Eurasia and North America until about 10,000 years ago.

Previous studies had hinted that the last mammoths left in Siberia were not natives - but immigrants from North America.

However, more evidence was required to strengthen the case for this "out of America" theory.

A team of researchers led by Professor Hendrik Poinar from McMaster University in Canada collected 160 mammoth samples from across Holarctica - a region encompassing present day North America, Europe and Asia.

Well-preserved DNA material - between 4,000 and 40,000 years old - was obtained from "almost every part of the animal - even from preserved hide, skin and hair", Professor Poinar told BBC News.

If you read the actual lyrics though, this clearly is a song to be sung by Barack Obama. He's just realized that he's about to be ambushed from the weeds by the Barracuda, and forced to his knees. Not long ago, he and "the porpoise" (Joe Biden, pre-hair plugs) were just "Selling a song," with "no right, no wrong" — just playing "a whisper game" involving a "name." This is clearly a reference to the "McSame" meme on which they were relying so much. And "sell me, sell you," the porpoise and the singer croon to each other in close harmony. Oh, yeah: It's about Obama and Biden, all right.

Japanese murder investigators fooled by life-sized sex doll

Police in Japan have been left red-faced by an apparent murder that turned out to be an unusual case of mistaken identity.

Fifteen officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a human form wrapped in plastic and tightly bound around the neck, midriff and ankles, with hair protruding from one end.

The body was left untouched and taken away for examination, and the crime scene duly secured by a police cordon.

They began preparing to write up the launch of a major murder investigation.

Dozens of extra officers were dispatched to interview potential witnesses, while the evening edition of the local newspaper carried a report of the gruesome find, complete with a photograph of the body's resting place.

By mid-afternoon, the body was in the hands of police pathologists. But when they sliced open the wrapping, they were confronted not by a decomposing corpse, but by a life-sized sex doll.

W.Va. Inmate Says He's Denied Religious Rights

The state Supreme Court is considering whether to hear a case involving an inmate who says he's being denied the right to freely practice his Native American religion.

Bobby Eugene Roddy wants the court to order the Division of Corrections to provide him with a sweat lodge to use one day a week for a ceremony.

He also insists on two prayer pipe ceremonies per week. The Mount Olive Correctional Complex inmate also wants to grow his hair long and be allowed to wear moccasins and other Native American garments.

The 42-year-old Roddy goes by the spiritual name "Running Cougar.''

Corrections Commissioner Jim Rubenstein says no inmate is prohibited from practicing religion. But he says certain requests must be denied for security concerns.

Geren Ford presented her Spring 2009 collection on the beautiful rooftop terrace of the Bowery Hotel. Rather than a runway show, Ford's models lined up on pedestals while photographers went from one model to the next snapping away.

The aesthetic was that of a Lower East Side hipster fallen in love with color once again. The bright pops of yellows, fuchsias and reds gave the collection a whimsical air, underscored by the flowing and often baggy drape of the clothes which defined the relaxed and casual nature of the collection.

The 80's also found their way back into the presentation in big, teased hair and gaudy buttoned embellishments--one riveted shift teal dress reminded me so much of a jacket worn by my grandmother that I had to do a double take. Most shocking of all was Ford's decision to outfit her models' feet in baggy socks with strappy sandals. Somehow, despite the negative association with German tourists, the look actually managed to seem hip and was a cohesive addition

Molding techniques for micro and nano gecko foot hairs

Introduction: Small diameter, high aspect ratio polymer structures can be produced with a molding process. Using liquid polymer and a master template we are able to create micro and nano hairs.

Approach: the team is using nanopore and micropore membranes as the negative mold for our gecko foot hairs. The team has also created master silicon molds to use for creating microfibers. We already have achieved excellent results in producing both micro and nano fibers, and we are now concentrating on molding fibers with spatular tips to increase the contact area.

Benefits: This process creates fibers of nearly any size and material. The spatular tips increase the contact area and tus adhesion.
