Desperate to prove that Sarah Palin has "national security" credentials, many McCain supporters have turned to her experience "commanding" the Alaska National Guard during her 21 months as governor of the state.

Of course, while these yo-yos might actually believe this nonsense, at bottom it's a pathetic, hail Mary stretch. Let McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds explain exactly why that is (with a little help from CNN's Campbell Brown):

Here's the deal: First off, Sarah Palin plays no role as the commander of the Alaska National Guard outside of the state. She never has, she never will. The actual commander--Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell--said so himself:

Well, surely the populace is convinced McCain, that straight-talking express train that he is, made the decision for the right reasons?

The public agrees, the press agrees, everyone agrees: this was a Hail Mary pass by the McCain campaign to win the election. It was a move borne out of desperation, as they started to realize that Clinton supporters and Democratic women are, by and large, not sufficiently stupid to abandon their Democratic ideals because their favored candidate lost.

It has backfired. Sarah Palin excites the conservative base, and that's great for them. She doesn't do much for anybody else, and her selection forces the McCain campaign to abandon the one good talking point they had, for if Sarah Palin is experienced enough to be president, Obama is experienced enough to be God.

"John McCain chose Sarah Palin because he thought having a woman on the ticket would help him get elected."

It’s easy to see where this movie is going.

Republicans don’t see the choice of Palin as affirmative action, despite her thin résumé and gaping absence of foreign policy knowledge, because they expect Republicans to put an underqualified “babe,” as Rush Limbaugh calls her, on the ticket.

They have a tradition of nominating fun, bantamweight cheerleaders from the West, like the previous Miss Congeniality types Dan Quayle and W., and then letting them learn on the job. So they crash into the globe a few times while they’re learning to drive, what’s the big deal?

Researchers have broken the code of an enzyme that plays a key role in the growth of most cancers, opening a path that could lead to a new class of anti-cancer drugs, according to a new study.

Other scientists who reviewed the study hail it as a breakthrough in fundamental cancer biology, but caution that much work remains before the exploit can be translated into next-generation therapies.

The enzyme, called telomerase, "is an ideal target for chemotherapy because it is active in almost all human cancer tumours, but inactive in most normal cells," says study leader Professor Emmanuel Skordalakes of Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.

"That means that a drug that deactivates telomerase would likely work against all cancers, with few side effects."

In cancer cells, however, telomerase is activated, allowing the disease cells to replicate endlessly and achieve what scientists call "cellular immortality," the hallmark of all cancers.

None of my pro-Hillary female friends are falling for this obvious GOP pander. To the contrary, McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his VP is drawing hoots of derision.

Once they learn that Sarah Palin opposes rape and incest exceptions for women seeking abortion, they completely write her off.

One female friend said: "Sarah Palin is to the movement for women's equality what Clarence Thomas is to civil rights. She's an extremist and an enemy to the cause that has been fought on her behalf.... Someone should stand up and say: 'I know Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton is a friend of mine. And Sarah Palin is no Hillary Rodham Clinton.'"

Then she added, with a laugh, "The only thing he is going to let her do in the White House is teach him how to use the internet."

Another said, "It just seems desperate and calculated."

John McCain shook up the presidential race Friday and targeted disaffected supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton with a vice presidential choice that defied conventional wisdom.

Once again, McCain demonstrated that he was willing to throw a long ball, a Hail Mary pass in a game in which the odds are running against him.

Palin has a distinctive background: the first woman governor of Alaska, an independent-minded reformer elected in 2006.

He called her "a blue-collar conservative woman who will excite the Republican Party and lay out the welcome mat for independents and disaffected Clinton voters."

"Conservatives will be thrilled with this pick," says conservative consultant Greg Mueller,

adviser to Steve Forbes' presidential campaign in 2000.

And he managed instantly to seize the spotlight from Democrat Barack Obama the morning after he accepted the Democratic nomination.

Pat Buchanan called it "the biggest political gamble, I think, just about in American political history."

Here in Hampton we had great looking clouds just before the storm hit. However, that was about it, we received just a taste of the storm.

An Austrian man, Martin Bierbauer, was blasted off the toilet when huge hailstones started shooting out of it.

I call complete and utter bullshit, considering that the ceiling insulation is laying on the toilet seat, the ceiling tile laying on the floor…looks to me like the hail collapsed the roof and poured into the floor. If you really stop and think about the path the hail would have to follow to go up plumbing piping in the first place, you’d realize this was a hoax. Hail would clump together into a giant ball, not roll like ping pong balls up a pipe.
