The National Rifle Association is endorsing Republican presidential nominee John McCain despite differences with the Arizona senator on gun-show rules and campaign finance restrictions.

The PAC was running an ad Thursday in USA Today accusing Obama of waffling on gun-rights issues and challenging his statements that he supports the right to bear arms. Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment but doesn't think it precludes "some commonsense gun laws so that we don't have kids being shot on the streets of cities like Chicago."

McCain's selection of Palin was a plus, LaPierre said.

"She's a hunter, she's a Second Amendment supporter and she's a tremendous asset to the ticket," he said.

Tony McNulty, the Home Office minister who eased restrictions on the use of stun guns last year, said they could be used 'where officers are facing violence or threats of violence of such severity that they would need to use force to protect the public, themselves and or the subjects of their action'.
Richard Brunstrom, the chief constable of North Wales Police, previously said in an online blog that the stun gun would provide 'better and quicker protection to ordinary patrol officers in remote locations, faced with dangerous or violent people'.

Holding her daughter close, she told how a baying Hindu mob dragged her husband – a Christian pastor – from his bed, beat him to death with stones and iron rods and then threw him into a river. She found his corpse two days later, washed up on the bank. When she went to the police, they told her to go away.

Mrs Panda and thousands of others like her are victims of the worst communal violence between Hindus and Christians that India has seen for decades.

The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, called it a "national disgrace".

The journey to the heart of the violence follows a bone-shaking road east from Bhubaneswar to the district capital, Phulbani. It was here in late August that thousands of Hindus armed with swords, sticks and primitive guns began taking matters into their own hands after the murder of an elderly religious leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati.

TBILISI, Georgia — The cameras at Georgia’s main opposition broadcaster, Imedi, kept rolling Nov. 7, when masked riot police officers with machine guns burst into the studio. They smashed equipment, ordered employees and television guests to lie on the floor and confiscated their cellphones. A news anchor remained on-screen throughout, describing the mayhem. Then all went black.

The pretext for the raid — which silenced the channel — was a government claim that Imedi was fomenting unrest when it broadcast a statement by one of its founders, Badri Patarkatsishvili, promising to topple the government of President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Earlier that day, riot police officers lashed out with clubs and fired rubber bullets at unarmed antigovernment protesters. A nine-day state of emergency followed.

Georgian police forces on Nov. 7, the day of a raid on the Imedi television station in Tbilisi.

Even though McCain comes from a military aristocracy and married an heiress and Obama's family was on food stamps for a time, Republicans can still make the elitist label stick on Obama, says Yuval Levin with the Ethics and Public Policy Center, speaking from the perspective of the right. "Economic populism almost never triumphs," he said. "It's easier to resent intellectual arrogance than economic success." Obama walked into it with his comments about small-town Americans clinging to their guns and religion along with his comment that he was "embarrassed" that Americans didn't speak more languages.

The National Rifle Assn. is turning up the volume in its campaign against Barack Obama, airing more ads about his record on guns. Starting as early as Sunday, new spots will air in battlegrounds including Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

The NRA already has spots in Colorado, New Mexico and Pennsylvania. Some use Obama's line, uttered at a San Francisco fundraiser, about "bitter" people clinging to their guns. Obama's attorneys sent letters asking that television stations cease airing the ads, but they continue to be shown on cable.

The NRA has set up a website attacking Obama and so far has disclosed spending $2.2 million on its independent expenditure campaign against the Democratic nominee, Federal Election Commission records show.

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said, "Obama has always believed that the 2nd Amendment protects the individual right to own a firearm."

"I don't believe we'll be spending money in California," Arulanandam said.

I walked in last night expecting a train wreck from our gal of the moment. Instead, I saw fireworks.

Sarah rules.

Sarah Palin was strong. Articulate. Folksy. And warm.

She ran like a linebacker in lipstick with the first question. It was about the economy.

The "you betchas" and "Joe Sixpacks" that crossed her lips, so hokey from just about anyone else, somehow worked.

More than that - they gave the public, ready to write Sarah off as a ditz, an opportunity to know a strong, sensible and smart woman. She stuck to her guns on tax cuts.

"Darn right we need tax relief for Americans! . . . You say paying higher taxes is patriotic," said Sarah. To me, that said it all.

What she's learned, in the days since the debacle of her "gotcha" interview with Katie Couric, is to stick to her principles.
