True. Jim Carrey, currently starring as Scrooge in the not-quite-as-boffo-as-it-should-be new version of A Christmas Carol, opines:

Interesting. As Mr. Treacher notes, Jim Carrey is the beneficiary of one of the most unregulated capitalist endeavors on the planet. Yet he grew up in Ontario. Had he wanted to be "protected against personal greed," he could have remained up north where his own particular industry is one of the most regulated in a highly regulated land. He could have made publicly funded movies subsidized by Cinedole Canada and Telewelfare Quebec and all the other government agencies for a nice four- or (if he's lucky) five-figure sum.

Thousands of people in Ivory Coast poisoned by toxic waste face being cheated out of $45 million in compensation after the money which was deposited in a bank account in the West African country, was frozen.

A local figure, claiming to be president of the National Co-ordination of Toxic Waste Victims of Cote d'Ivoire and who is unknown to the victims' lawyers, has now applied to have the cash moved to the association's account.

The case centres around the dumping of hundreds of tonnes of sulphur-contaminated toxic oil waste by a ship near Abidjan, the country's capital, in 2006.

The compensation money was deposited in an Ivorian bank to be handed out, directly, in cash, to each of the 30,000 victims, but the payments were frozen last month.

Martyn Day, the victims' laywer, described the individual who has applied for the money as a "shadowy figure" and said he was "extremely worried" about the development

"The Ivorians we know have been very scared to tell us who it is," he said.

Sandia National Laboratories Director Tom Hunter makes a whopping $1.7 million per year, and that Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio makes $800,348 per year. As Dan Hancock of the Southwest Research and Information Center pointed out, this means that Hunter makes four times as much as the President of the United States, and that Anastasio makes twice as much.

We found Sandia’s defense of the high salaries quite laughable. “They are making complex decisions that are actually affecting the security of the United States,” Sandia spokesman Neal Singer said. “They’re paid for the difficult decisions they make.” Unlike the President??

The land will likely be used to store transportation equipment that moves cargo to and from the ports of Colon and the Free Zone.

UGANDA: Palm Project Accused of Environmental Destruction

The Ugandan government entered into an agreement with BIDCO, the largest manufacturer of vegetable oil in Uganda, and Malaysian palm oil giants Wilmar to set up a plantation and refinery in the Kalangala islands in Lake Victoria. Transnational agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland owns shares in both companies.

KADINGO says apart from massive application of fertilisers which washes into the lake causing over-production of algae and water weeds with knock-on effects on lake ecosystems, BIDCO has also encroached on national forestry land outside the 7,000 hectares it received from Uganda government.

Caskets on isle 15, shovels in the gardening section. Ok maybe I took it to far there but yes you can buy caskets at Walmart, but not actually in the store which would be even more weird. Maybe I am just behind in the times and I did not know that already. How naive of me not to think you could order a casket online at Walmart, you can get anything else really. I guess that is not something that I have thought about so that’s my excuse. If you want to take a look for yourself go to this link.

A new video of Jeremiah Wright has surfaced, showing Barack Obama's pastor of 20 years praising Marxism and discussing his ties to communists in El Salvador and Nicaragua and the Libyan government. Equally important, Wright is being introduced in the video by Robert W. McChesney, co-founder of Free Press, an organization which has come under scrutiny for its links to the Obama Administration and dedication to the transformation and control of the private media in the U.S.

clipper's remarks: With short term rates at or near zero, they can't o lower. The only way way rates can go is up. The questions remain; how high and how fast.
This article does a much better job than I can about explaining what the bond market is facing. maybe the move up in rates won't be as dramatic as the article suggests, but we all should prepare ourselves for it.

The next big shoe to drop and giant bubble to pop is the US bond market. The explosive run up into December 2008 was an absolute Christmas present for bond bears willing to short the panic top. The 2008 fear-related spike in bonds was the equivalent to NASDAQ in 2000 or real estate in 2004. However, this explosive move up was primarily driven by global fear, where the other two bubbles were driven by greed.

Thousands March in 3-Day Showdown with Banking Industry

Workers gave pink slips to the country's top bankers Tuesday morning to culminate three days of protests, billed as the Showdown in Chicago, during the American Bankers' Association's annual meeting.

After "firing" the bank CEOs, Adam Kader of the workers group Arise Chicago presented a notice that the banks' $17.8 trillion "loan" in taxpayer-bailout funds is due since, he said, banks have not complied with the conditions placed on the handout by the people.

Along with decrying the financial deregulation that facilitated the economic crisis and the "corporate greed" exhibited in exorbitant bonuses and salaries for industry executives even after the bailout, protesters made several concrete demands.
