I wept when I discovered that I had the dreaded "C",

And needed operations, and much chemotherapy.

I wanted God to tell me why I had to suffer so,

And all the reasons for my pain, I begged He'd let me know.

He held me in His arms, and gently brushed away my tears,

And told me He'd sustain me, and would take away my fears.

I draw upon the daily strength that's mine from God above,

For cancer is so limited, it cannot cripple love.

I find that I am able to accept my lot, and cope,

For cancer cannot take my peace, nor can it shatter hope.

It can't destroy my confidence that God is on the throne,

Or even dull the memories of blessings I have known.

It cannot silence courage, and can't quench the Spirit's flame,

And though sometimes I waver, still God's power is the same.

Each day my Lord's so precious I must marvel at His grace,

And keep on looking forward to the time I'll see His face.

Joy is an essential spiritual practice growing out of faith, grace, gratitude, hope, and love. It is the pure and simple delight in being alive. Invite joy into your life by staging celebrations. Host festivities to mark transitions and changes in your life. Toast moments of happiness you notice as you go through your day. Dance — jump for joy — as often as possible. Life is not meant to be endured; it is to be enjoyed.

Joy will usually be part of a set of symptoms presenting in your life. The best protocol is to be thankful for the intensity of these feelings. When you are experiencing sorrow and sadness, when the tears are flowing, remember they can be stepping stones to joy.

It's amazing how many layers of meaning you can pack into a little sermon if you know what you're doing. I know: sermons are my stock in trade. And they're also the primary arsenal for aw-shucks just-plain-folks evangelical Republican Mike Huckabee, who stumped for John McCain at the Republican National Convention with a speech that made my jaw drop.

toward the end of his speech, he pulled out a seemingly-unrelated story

And this is where, reading this aloud, I said suddenly to my partner, Oh, I hope this doesn't go where I think it's about to go.

Are we getting some clarity yet? Shall we break it down? Good sermons come in layers, and Huckabee is good at sermons.

But we're still missing a layer. Let's back it up--who else are these soldiers like?

in this campaign where they're already painted the opposition as the Antichrist, they just labeled their candidate Jesus Christ.

The Times of London has come up with a new list of the world's 10 richest streets based on property prices. The most expensive street on the globe, unsurprisingly, is in ultra-rich Monaco - Avenue Princess Grace, to be exact, where average prices run about $17,000 per sq. ft. It's a pretty safe bet that anyone with an address there is a millionaire at the very least. In second place is Severn Road in Hong Kong's Victoria Peak district (above), where the average price is about $11,000 per sq. ft. Here are the rest of the runners-up:

During the Democratic National Convention, there was not a day of coverage that did not include breathless speculation on how fractured the Democratic Party and how at any time either Hillary Clinton or both of the Clintons would institute some sort of coup de grace and undermine Barack Obama

But not one mention that there is a whole other Republican rally going on right now

Why, media, why? The portion I watched on Tuesday had such names as Tucker Carlson, Bruce Fein and Grover Norquist speaking

Almost 9,800 tickets had been sold for the Rally for the Republic, being held in Minneapolis

Paul

considers the rally a celebration of traditional Republican values

But Paul has no speaking role at the GOP convention. He said his staff made overtures to the party, but nothing came of its efforts.

David Duchovny enters rehab for sex addiction

LOS ANGELES - David Duchovny, who plays a sex-obsessed character on Showtime's "Californication," has entered a rehabilitation facility for sex addiction.

The 48-year-old actor said he did so voluntarily, in a statement released Thursday by his lawyer, Stanton Stein. He added: "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."

Duchovny's publicist, Flo Grace, confirmed the report, which first appeared on the Web site People.com. She and Stein both declined further comment.

My friend Tom Feeley is in Big trouble. He runs the web site informationclearinghouse.info which updates "news you won't find in the corporate media" every day. The site is strongly anti-war.

Tom has gotten his share of death threats over the years, but what happened this week is a lot more serious.

Two days ago, Tom's wife found three well dressed men in their kitchen. The man who did all the talking, told Tom's wife (I won't give her name) that Tom must "Stop what he is doing on the Internet, NOW!" As crazy as it sounds, he pulled back his lapel and showed her a gun of some kind which she could not identify.

Tom's wife is hysterical and has not returned to the house since the incident. She contacted the FBI but the FBI said their was nothing they could do. Tom and his wife separated recently after a 30 year marraige, so he is publishing from a different location.
