This is what I wish the internet search will be able to do with a mobile device in the NEAR future. Touch screen, built in camera, scanner, WiFi, google map (hopefully google earth), google search, image search… all in one device. Like this way, when you can see a building through it, it gives you the image search result right on the spot.

Auch die Bibel lässt diese Möglichkeit offen: Sie spricht von einem Gebirge mit dem Namen Ararat, diese Bezeichnung scheint jedoch identisch zu sein mit dem assyrischen Urartu, einem Gebiet nördlich von Mesopotamien. Auch der Berg Nisir aus dem Gilgamesch-Epos scheint eher nicht auf den sehr weit nördlich Babyloniens liegenden Berg Ararat hinzuweisen

Google wants you to build the earth in 3D

Google is asking members of the community to create 3D building models with the aim of making Google Earth the most comprehensive explorable 3D atlas in the world.

Using online web tools provided by Google, users can turn a building of their choice into a three dimensional model. The user-created models will eventually become one piece of a larger 3D puzzle of buildings and structures displayed in the 3D Buildings layer on Google Earth.

The tool is called Google Building Maker and was launched on October 13.

Each 3D creation will have to pass by Google's 3D Warehouse where it will undergo a strict review process before being approved.

By opening up the building platform to people all over the world, Google hopes to make the 3D Buildings layer the most comprehensive 3D atlas in the world.

Google is using its Google Earth mapping tool to simulate on a 3D map of the world the predicted effects of climate change until the year 2100.

Using data provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the search giant created new layers for Google Earth showing the range of expected temperature and precipitation changes under different global emissions scenarios that could occur throughout the century.

In January 2002, a dull star in an obscure constellation suddenly became 600,000 times more luminous than our Sun, temporarily making it the brightest star in our galaxy. The star, called V838 Monocerotis, has long since faded back to obscurity, but observations of a phenomenon called a "light echo" around the star have uncovered remarkable new features over the following years (this animation covers two years' time). The light echo is light from the earlier explosion echoing off dust surrounding the star. Light from the outburst traveled to the dust and then was reflected to Earth. In response to the launch of Google’s Fast Flip, I observed that Google is correctly focused on creating a new user interface for news, when most media companies are not. A lot of people responded that Fast Flip is not an innovative or effective UI for news — which may be true, but that misses the point entirely.

It doesn’t matter so much whether Google succeeds or fails with this particular experiment. What matters is that they are trying to solve the right problem.

The challenge for media companies is not to figure out what to do with their content — content in and of itself doesn’t matter. It never has.

It’s all about the package.

The Daily Mail recently made waves with a photo exposing what it called the "ghost fleet of the recession" where hundreds of ships were shown on anchor off the straits of Singapore, doing nothing except rusting: a tribute to the unprecedented collapse in world trade, the bulk of which is seaborne, and the huge amount of excess slack in shipping.

Zero Hedge decided to probe this idea further, and for that we took advantage of the very useful real time ship tracker functionality provided by vesseltracker.com (any reader who has Google Earth can easily replicate these results using the following data file).

First we wanted to show how traditionally functioning critical routes are still heavily trafficked, as can be seen by the large amount of green highlights in the following snapshots (green indicates operating ship, red denotes a ship out of spot/charter and currently unused).
