Iranian girl wins gold in Asian Youth Games

SINGAPORE, July 1 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iran's Nazanin Golahmadi claimed the gold medal in the shot put event of the 1st Asian Youth Games on Wednesday. The 15-year-old shot putter defeated Fatima Omar Ba from Qatar in the girls' shot put finals earning the first gold medal for her country.

Golahmadi's personal best is 9.70 meters but she threw a distance of 8.77 meters in this event. Omar Ba finished second throwing 8.21 meters.

"I didn't think I'd win the gold medal. I am so happy and I present my medal to my family and my coach. This medal gives me increased motivation to gain more success in the future," the Iranian gold medalist said.

We're quite pleased with them, ourselves although everyday we are bombarded with corrosive media coverage that finds something to complain about... such a torrent of ill-will the daily dose of politics in other places?

Anyhow, President Barack Obama really is a good political leaders. He has integrity, honesty, moral values, vision, is very hard working and on the side of the people -- not much more to ask hope for, really. Although the fact that he's proven himself already successful in many ways is good too. (Although the constant rainstrom of slander might blind us a bit to that, here).

This is a Totally New Experience for me, that's 4sure. The Pres gets a gold medal in Cairo and I'm glad. He's cheered on the streets of Paris (and Broadway, etc.) and I'm glad. Veterans at Normandy applaud him and I'm glad.

It's a triumph 4 us all. Viva hum

CHAMONIX, France -- Karine Ruby, a former Olympic snowboarding champion who had been training to become a mountain guide, died Friday in a climbing accident on Mont Blanc. She was 31.

Ruby was roped to other climbers when she and some members of the group fell into a deep crack in the glacier on the way down the mountain, Chamonix police official Laurent Sayssac said.

A 38-year-old man from the Paris region also died in the fall, and a 27-year-old man was evacuated by helicopter with serious injuries and hospitalized, Sayssac added.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon called Ruby an "exceptional sportswoman."

"Karine incarnated the emergence of snowboarding in France," Fillon said in a statement. "The people of France will hold on to the memory of her talent and her joie de vivre."

One of the good things that came out of the tragic events of 9/11 is that heroism has reacquired some of its original luster.

I’m not suggesting that a hostage can’t also be a hero. Apparently Sen. John McCain behaved like one when he was a POW, volunteering to be beaten by the Vietnamese in order to spare the men in his charge.

In our society, we even call football players and Olympic skaters heroes, further confusing the issue. The most you can say for some guy who’s looking to win the Super Bowl or a gold medal is that he’s a darn good athlete, and leave it at that.

In the main, the 3,000 people who were massacred in Manhattan on September 11, 2001, were no more heroic than you or I. On the other hand, the cops and the firemen, those who ran into the blazing infernos in order to rescue perfect strangers, were the ones who exhibited the requisite bravery and self-sacrifice to deserve the honor.

Chiles Rellenos Egg Soufflé Bake

cans (4 oz each) Old El Paso® whole green chiles, drained

oz Monterey Jack cheese, cut into 3x1/2x1/2-inch strips

jar (2 oz) diced pimientos, drained

eggs, separated

cups milk

1 1/2

cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour

teaspoon salt

cups Old El Paso® Thick 'n Chunky salsa

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 11x7-inch (2-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray. Stuff chiles with cheese strips; arrange in baking dish. Sprinkle with pimientos.

In medium bowl, beat egg yolks and milk with wire whisk until well blended. Stir in flour and salt until smooth.

In large bowl, beat egg whites with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently fold yolk mixture into beaten egg whites until no traces of white remain. Spoon mixture evenly over stuffed chiles.

Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean and top is golden brown. Garnish each serving with cilantro sprig. Serve immediately with salsa.

Irish Soda Bread

tablespoons butter or margarine, softened

2 1/2

cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour

tablespoons sugar

teaspoon baking soda

teaspoon baking powder

1/2

teaspoon salt

1/3

cup raisins, if desired

3/4

cup buttermilk

Heat oven to 375ºF. Grease cookie sheet.

Cut butter into flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt in large bowl, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in raisins and just enough buttermilk so dough leaves side of bowl.

Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead 1 to 2 minutes or until smooth. Shape into round loaf, about 6 1/2 inches in diameter. Place on cookie sheet. Cut an X shape about 1/2 inch deep through loaf with floured knife.

Bake 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Brush with butter or margarine, softened, if desired.

Why the "X" on top of Irish soda bread? Legend tells us that this cross is meant to scare away evil spirits. Spooky!

But adrenaline junkie Cody McCasland has done it all - and now has his sights on a Paralympic gold.

The sprightly youngster has even been fitted with running legs like those of 'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius to make his dream come true.

But they are just part of an armoury of limbs that help him lead a normal life. 'In my walking legs, I can take big steps. In my running legs, I can run very fast and jump on one leg. In my stubbies, I like to play,'

Cody was born without knees or some leg bones and has had 15 operations - his first at three days old.

He suffered problems with everything from his bowel to gall bladder as a result of a rare condition called sacral agenesis.

'I definitely will take part one day and win a gold medal,' said the boy, who has even inspired US soldiers who lost limbs in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Utah's Amano Chocolate Company won five medals -- one gold, two silvers and two bronze -- during the Academy of Chocolate Awards held recently in London.

Amano won four medals in the "Best bean-to-bar: dark chocolate" category. The Madagascar earned gold; the Ocumare and the Montanya (the company's newest bar) earned silver, while the Jembrana took bronze.

In the "Best milk chocolate bar" category, Amano Ocumare Milk Chocolate -- another new product -- took bronze.
