The motivation of those outside of Christ is always less than the highest good, and thus the reason for Law and the order it brings is merely personal peace in this life to those without a spiritual life. Egoistically speaking, Augustine sees that the non-Christian has as an intent only selfishness, and so though they may receive the Laws of God for practical purposes and their morality might have points of identity with Christian ethics on how a Civil state should be governed, being outside of the grace of God and having their own pleasure and well being as their ultimate goal, in every good law they ordain, they still break the Law. The Law is love, and love of the self the source of every ill of man. As Calvin said it, self denial is the essence of every Christian virtue.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was the second daughter of a well-off English family who went to Florence for her birth and subsequently named her after the city. Unlike other girls in similar families Florence was educated in various subjects including languages.

Florence did not like the social scene that she and her family were involved in. It did not have the importance to her as it did to her sister and mother. Florence wanted to do something positive with her life.

When Florence was sixteen years old her life was changed. God spoke to her and told her that she had a task that He wanted her to do. Whatever anyone would think of such an event, it was real to Florence. She now knew that her life had a purpose, and that whatever would happen would be in God's will and timing.

The problem I see with the Hauerwasian view is that it has a tendency to elevate the church to the object of highest loyalty and threatens to collapse the distinction between Christ and the church. Gerhard Forde warned against seeing the church as an “eschatological vestibule” where the kingdom of God has already come in its fullness instead of as an earthen vessel where we hear God’s word and receive the sacraments. The church, as a human institution, is no more immune to corruption than any other, so we can’t assume that it deserves our unconditional loyalty any more than the nation does. In fact, a good candidate for the essence of Protestantism might be the imperative to criticize the church in light of the gospel.

Omkari Panwar and her husband, a retired farmer, mortgaged their land, sold off their buffaloes, and took out loans to finance IVF treatment so they could produce a male heir.

Panwar, who has no birth certificate but bases her age on how old she was during India’s 1947 independence, delivered the 2-pound preemies—a boy and a girl—by C-section. “We kept no stone unturned and God has rewarded us," the 77-year-old father said.
