Oldest Preserved Spider Web Dates Back to Dinosaurs

The world’s oldest known spider web has been discovered on a beach in Sussex, England, trapped inside an ancient chunk of amber.

Scientists found the rare amber fossil in December, and have now confirmed that it contains remnants of spider silk spun roughly 140 million years ago by an ancestor of modern orb-weaving spiders. After slicing the amber into thin sections and examining each piece under a high-powered microscope, the researchers discovered that the ancient silk threads share several features common to modern spider webs, including droplets of sticky glue used to hold the web together and capture prey.

I used Jingle Level 2, white cardstock, All Decked Out stamp set, white daisy embossing powder, clear sparkles, liquid glass and white daisy organdy ribbon.

Here are the patterns that I created - cut on the black lines and score on the red lines

For the insert fold along all of the score lines, punch your holes and cut the slit for the card as shown. Put glue on the bottom 1/2", fold to make a 3-D rectangle which you then glue into the gift card holder lining the bottom up with the 3 1/2" line. Once that is secure fold the side flaps over and glue to the insert.

Thankfulness Tree

clipper's remarks: This is the second year we have had a Thankfulness Tree. I have some fake branches that I put in a big vase to hold the leaves. I went to a scrapbooking store and used their die cut machine to make many many leaves from paper. If you buy the paper there, you can use the machines for free.

I punched holes in the leaves to hang on the branches without having to mess with string or glue or hangers of any sort.

I place the leaves in a bowl with a pen so any guests that come during November can write something they are thankful for on a leaf and hang it up.

On Thanksgiving we read the leaves and we give thanks for all the friends and family that have come to our house. Then I put the leaves in a bag and date it so we can read them in future years too.

Yesterday, my daughter wrote that she was thankful for "being born" and for "being in this family." I am so thankful for those things too.

Fill a flowerpot with sand and set in a shapely bare tree branch.

Next, cut a pile of leaf shapes from colored craft foam.

As your guests arrive, have them take a leaf and, with a permanent marker, write their name and the date on one side and something they're grateful for on the other.

To decorate your tree, push a large ornament hanger or straightened paper clip through the stem of each leaf and hang it in place.

getting a bill in the mail isn’t any fun, but you know what they say about lemons and lemonade, right?

we get tons of bills

with interesting security patterns printed on the insides. we’ve used them in various craft projects here and there, but one of our favorites requires practically no materials or skill and is a great way to whip up some unique and wonderful stationery.

Here’s what you’ll need:
-envelopes with printed interior security patterns
-letter opener or blade
-glue stick (tombow glue sticks are our favorite!)

1. Carefully de-construct your envelopes using your fingers, a letter opener or a blade, making sure not to rip the paper.

2. Unfold the envelope completely, and flip over so printed side is facing down. re-fold the envelope inside-out along the score lines and apply glue along any seams that overlap. to seal the envelopes, we put a little glue along the top edge and tucked it under the main envelope flap for a clean finish. done!

My childhood Christmases involved a lot of cleaning. What's more fun for a kid than tearing into a giant present, doing whatever it took to get the paper off and the box open as soon as possible? Afterwards, once our living room was blanketed in paper pieces, my dad would bring out a trash bag for us to scoop up all of the snowman and Santa-printed paper and throw it out.

1. Use newsprint or magazine paper. You already have it lying around the house, and it can be recycled when your friends or family have finished opening the gift. If you want to keep your presents from looking too much like this morning's front pages, and you're feeling crafty, cut a sponge into a holiday skape, like a star, and use some paint to stamp a pattern on the paper. You can also use these materials to make a pom pom bow following these instructions from Better Homes and Gardens, but use tape pr glue instead of string.

1. Take two different colour laces, each a tiny bit longer than the correct length for the shoes 2. Cut them not quite in half, but offset by two or three centimetres. See below for how to calculate the difference in length between the two halves 3. Tie one shorter piece of one colour (orange in my example) and one longer piece of the other colour (red in my example) firmly together and trim off the excess. For extra security, add a dab of glue. Use the remaining pieces to make the bi-colour lace for the other shoe 4. Pull the longer (red) end out through the bottom right eyelet, feeding from inside the shoe, until you reach the joining knot 5. Now lace the rest of the shoe as per Straight (Fashion) Lacing.

Not to be outdone by any other artist or organization, the Cardboard Institute of Technology created an entire cardboard city called “Cardburg”, exhibited at the Cell Space gallery in San Francisco in 2008. So what, exactly, is the ‘Cardboard Institute of Technology’? HAMBURG — Phil Collins is drumming no more, for now.

The former singer and drummer for Genesis told a German newspaper that since he had surgery in April to repair a dislocated vertebra in his neck, he doesn't have feeling in his fingers and isn't able to pick up his sticks.

The 58-year-old musician was quoted by Hamburger Abendblatt on Monday as saying the only way he could drum is if he were to "glue drumsticks to my hands."

But that's not stopped his recording aspirations. He told the newspaper he plans a new CD that will feature covers of 30 songs from the Motown label in 2010.

"I want the songs to sound exactly like the originals," the paper quoted him as saying.

Collins, who lives in Switzerland, was in Hamburg to celebrate the first anniversary of the debut of "Tarzan" the musical. The show features music Collins composed for the 1999 animated Disney film, including the Oscar-winning song "You'll Be in My Heart."

Make a gift bow from a magazine page

In gift wrap emergencies when you've got the present but need some wrapping, here's an idea for turning a magazine page into a bow. (There may be better ways to stick this thing together, but I used what I had on hand: staples and adhesive glue dots)

Cut a magazine page into 9 strips, 3/4" wide. Leave 3 of the strips full length. Cut one inch off 3 of the strips. Cut two inches off 2 of the strips. Cut the last strip down to 3 1/2" long.

Twist each strip to form a loop at both ends and staple it in the center. Shape the last, short strip into a circle and secure it with a glue dot.

Layer the 3 longest pieces on top of each other, spacing them evenly and securing each with a glue dot. Add the next two groups of pieces, doing the same. And finally, stick the loop into the center.
