Morning Edition, July 3, 2008 · When it comes to the upward movement of the Earth's crust, the residents of tiny Gustavus, Alaska, are experts.

"Isostatic rebound is the term for it," explains Morgan DeBoer, taking a break from his sawmill. "You know, land rebounding, coming up, springing up out of the water at an inch and a half a year."

DeBoer has good reason to be up on the jargon. Over the past decades, isostatic rebound has more than doubled the size of his family's seafront property, as the rising Earth's crust lifts new real estate out of the water.

The family even went to court — the case went all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals — to defend their right to the new land.

The images you see below were taken at the turn of the Millennium, when NASA’s scientists had a brilliant idea: to scan through 400,000 images taken by the Landsat 7 satellite and display only the most the most beautiful. The family even went to court — the case went all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals — to defend their right to the new land.

"You wouldn't think it would be much," says DeBoer, "but when it's flat land to begin with, any change is significant. We gain probably an acre or so every year." With all this new acreage, the DeBoers have built themselves a nine-hole golf course.

It is believed that the Willamette meteorite crashed to the Earth somewhere in Canada, but that it was shifted by a glacier south to Oregon, where it was discovered in 1902. It is the largest meteorite found in the United States, and the sixth largest in the world.

Earthjustice Asks UN To Address Mining Threat In Glacier National Park

Conservation groups, led by Earthjustice and its Canadian counterpart Ecojustice, are petitioning the United Nations to investigate mining activities that could devastate a national park and a World Heritage site spanning the U.S.-Canadian border.

The proposed mining and drilling projects in the headwaters of the Flathead River, located in the south-east corner of British Columbia, threaten the ecological health of Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site straddling the Alberta-Montana border.

Scientists have discovered massive, slow-motion "ice quakes" trembling twice a day through the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, an Alaska-sized swath of Antarctica. Detective work has traced the source of the shaking to the Whillans Ice Stream, a glacier 100 kilometers across and 1 kilometer thick, which flows from the ice sheet's interior.

Most glaciers edge forward continuously, but the Whillans was already known to behave bizarrely: It sits still most of the time, then surges more than a half-meter forward twice per day as ocean tides lift and lower a slab of floating ice that extends from the end of the glacier onto the Ross Sea

By combining the GPS and seismic data, the researchers saw that the ice quakes and glacial surges synchronized perfectly in time, suggesting that the shaking was caused by the ice grinding over a rough spot in the rock below

What has come from these discoveries is a realization that glaciers have other modes of behavior than we have thought of previously

Called Chryseobacterium greenlandensis, the species is related genetically to certain bacteria found in fish, marine mud, and the roots of some plants. The organism is one of only about 10 scientifically described new species originating from polar ice and glaciers.
