One of those spy-gizmos that never seemed to make sense to us was the chewing-gum size camera capable of snapping pictures of the enemy plans in any lighting condition and were somehow able to withstand the rigors from the crushing deep-sea depths and its angry mutant sea-bass to the vacuum of space with giant space-lasers. Bloody unlikely. Nothing short of a flatbed-scanner would be able to get accurate representations of these plans. Firmly entrenched in our techie-dismissals, we found it difficult to enjoy the rest of the movie.

You come here to participate in your industry. Your parents were consumers, back in the 1960s. But you are here to add value and advance the state of the art, so you are some kind of participant. Not a consumer. An end-user. An end-user is the historically evolved version of a consumer.

Those things suck up power even when the device isn't in use, and that drain can add up. It's a good idea to put all your consoles on a power strip and shut them off at the source when you're not using them -- why pay all that money to fuel a device you're not enjoying?

Don't blame the fridge for your steep power bills -- an Australian consumer agency study has found that videogame consoles and plasma flat-screen TVs are major electricity guzzlers, even when left on stand-by.

The recent study by Choice said Sony Corp's Playstation 3, closely followed by Microsoft's Xbox 360 and plasma television sets, consumed the most power out of a list of 16 electronic devices tested, including laptops, stereo systems and DVD players.

"Our tests found that leaving a Playstation 3 on while not in use would cost almost... five times more than it would take to run a refrigerator for the same yearly period," said the study which was published on Choice's Web site

"The plasma TV set was also a power hungry device, consuming over four times more power than a traditional analogue set. The average desktop computer was third on the list."

V.A. Employees Spend Billions on Govt Credit Cards

WASHINGTON — Veterans Affairs employees last year racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in government credit-card bills at casino and luxury hotels, movie theaters and high-end retailers such as Sharper Image and Franklin Covey — and government auditors are investigating, citing past spending abuses.

All told, VA staff charged $2.6 billion to their government credit cards.

The Associated Press, through a Freedom of Information request, obtained the VA list of 3.1 million purchases made in the 2007 budget year. The list offers a detailed look into the everyday spending at the government's second largest department.

At least 13 purchases totaling $8,471 were charged at Sharper Image, a specialty store featuring high-tech electronics and gizmos such as robotic barking dogs. In addition, 19 charges worth $1,999.56 were made at Franklin Covey, which sells leather totes and planners geared toward corporate executives.

If you were to dig a hole 300 feet straight down from the center of the charming French village of Crozet, you'd pop into a setting that calls to mind the subterranean lair of one of those James Bond villains.

A garishly lit tunnel ten feet in diameter curves away into the distance, interrupted every few miles by lofty chambers crammed with heavy steel structures, cables, pipes, wires, magnets, tubes, shafts, catwalks, and enigmatic gizmos.

It's called the Large Hadron Collider, and its purpose is simple but ambitious: to crack the code of the physical world

Starting sometime in the coming months, two beams of particles will race in opposite directions around the tunnel, which forms an underground ring 17 miles in circumference.

At four locations the beams will converge, sending the particles crashing into each other at nearly the speed of light.

I enjoy reading the personal blogs of Scott Adams (the creator of Dilbert) and John Dvorak (PC Magazine columnist and host of Cranky Geeks),

I was surprised to see these two gentlemen linking to the same story on Next Energy News covering Toshiba's announcement of a "200 kilowatt" nuclear reactor

With maintenance-free operation and the price of the generated energy estimated at 5 cents per kilowatt-hour, this announcement appeared to undermine the usual arguments against nuclear power.

According to some information I found on the Encyclopedia of Earth, the reactor in question is called the Rapid-L, and the 200-kilowatt electrical output is just a small part of the reactor's thermal power production of 5 megawatts.

So even if your McMansion is filled with enough electronic gizmos to use up that 200-kilowatt power rating, there's no way it can dissipate 5 megawatts of thermal power. That's enough to heat over 200 homes during a 27° F (-3° C) cold snap. You'll just have to share.

Buy him a hot Christmas gift for 2007. His own fully working AWACS.

So girls there’s a hint for Christmas, if in doubt about what to get him for his Christmas present, buy him a gizmo. Something gadgetty and fun, mechanical or electrical, with flashing lights!

Well maybe not the flashing lights, however those don’t hurt.

Seriously though, guys do love gadgets, for Christmas or any other time. So if you’re looking for a cool Christmas gift for him for 2007 look for a gadget.

Hows this for a gadget that he might love. His own AWACS surveillance aircraft. Not a real one of course, those are massive and cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Mr. Mosley pays anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on the item and its health, and then either fixes and resells it online or scraps it for parts. He says his company is profitable but that the venture is not solely about that kind of green. “There’s definitely a market here, but I am keeping leads and toxic wastes out of the ground. They work hand in hand,” he said. “I figure I’ve probably kept thousands of pounds of waste out of landfills.”
