How to tell if your child is gifted

our 2- to 4-year-old may be gifted if he:

Has a specific talent, such as artistic ability or an unusual facility for numbers. For example, children who draw unusually realistic pictures or who can manipulate numbers in their head may be gifted.

Reaches developmental milestones well ahead of peers.

Has advanced language development, such as an extensive vocabulary or the ability to speak in sentences much earlier than other children his age.

Is relentlessly curious and never seems to stop asking questions.

Is unusually active, though not hyperactive. While hyperactive children often have a short attention span, gifted children can concentrate on one task for long periods of time and are passionate about their interests.

Did your child walk and talk early? Does she have a brain like a sponge? Scribble magnificently? Love learning? Ask questions that leave you marveling (and scrambling to Google an answer)?

Wow, clearly she's a genius!

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2008) — We've all heard it. Many of us in fact believe it. Girls just aren't as good at math as boys.

But is it true? After sifting through mountains of data - including SAT results and math scores from 7 million students who were tested in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act - a team of scientists says the answer is no. Whether they looked at average performance, the scores of the most gifted children or students' ability to solve complex math problems, girls measured up to boys.

"There just aren't gender differences anymore in math performance," says University of Wisconsin-Madison psychology professor Janet Hyde, the study's leader. "So parents and teachers need to revise their thoughts about this."

The UW-Madison and University of California, Berkeley, researchers report their findings in the July 25 issue of Science.

Must parents today be more vigilant about their kids' preparation for the future than previous generations had been? Certainly contemporary parents seem to be more worried about their children's achievement, perhaps in part because the skills needed for the future are not as well-defined as they once were. There is a sense of urgency: start early; work hard at learning how to learn; strive for high scores on tests that may determine who will succeed someday. We seem to have concluded that, unless proven otherwise, those deemed "gifted" at learning will have the edge. It's a logical conviction, but one that needs some tempering, according to both anecdotal and statistical evidence.

High-school students here rarely get more than a half-hour of homework a night. They have no school uniforms, no honor societies, no valedictorians, no tardy bells and no classes for the gifted. There is little standardized testing, few parents agonize over college and kids don't start school until age 7

Yet by one international measure, Finnish teenagers are among the smartest in the world. They earned some of the top scores by 15-year-old students who were tested in 57 countries. American teens finished among the world's C students even as U.S. educators piled on more homework, standards and rules. Finnish youth, like their U.S. counterparts, also waste hours online. They dye their hair, love sarcasm and listen to rap and heavy metal. But by ninth grade they're way ahead in math, science and reading -- on track to keeping Finns among the world's most productive workers

The emotional overexcitability is probably the most significant of the five overexcitabilities. It is most easily recognized by parents of gifted children because these children display heightened and intense emotions and emotional responses to events and experiences.

Children with this OE have the capacity for great emotional depth. They develop strong attachments to people, places, and things. Because of their emotional intensity, they are often accused of over-reacting or being melodramatic. However, the emotions they feel are real. The molehills to them are truly mountains.

The emotional OE is also manifested in a deep concern for others, as well as self-criticism and anxiety.

The depression that those with emotional OE often experience is existential depression, which means that they become depressed over issues concerning the basic questions

They can also feel a deep sense of responsibility, which can lead to feelings of failure and guilt.
