clipper's remarks: The comment by the woman who claimed that Obama was an Arab was the clinching justification that a large segment of the McCain supporters are deluded, gullible, and ignorant. It concerned me that people could be so easily manipulated into believing such fantastic claims. In some was it reminded me of the frenzy I was told about in 1930's Germany against the already hated Jews and Gypsies. We've come too far in 50 years to allow this type of hate to enter back into American discourse.

McCain Draws Line on Attacks as Crowds Cry ‘Fight Back’

When a man told him he was “scared” of an Obama presidency, Mr. McCain replied, “I want to be president of the United States and obviously I do not want Senator Obama to be, but I have to tell you — I have to tell you — he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared" of "as president of the United States.” The crowd booed loudly at Mr. McCain’s response.

Later, a woman stood up at the meeting, held at Lakeville South High School in a far suburb of Minneapolis, and told Mr. McCain that she could not trust Mr. Obama because he was an “Arab.”

“I don’t think it’s that big a deal,” Rick Davis, Mr. McCain’s campaign manager, told reporters in a conference call on Friday. “I think political rallies have always attracted people who have an emotional connection to the outcome of an election.”

DRESDEN, Germany: A health official says 1,400 birds have been slaughtered at a poultry farm in eastern Germany after a duck tested positive for the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus.

Saxony state health ministry spokesman Ralph Schreiber said Friday that the farm's entire stock of ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens was slaughtered overnight.

The farm near Goerlitz on the Polish border has been sealed off to prevent the spread of the virus. Birds at other poultry farms in the region are being checked.

The global economy is losing more money from the disappearance of forests than through the current banking crisis, according to an EU-commissioned study.

It puts the annual cost of forest loss at between $2 trillion and $5 trillion.

"It's not only greater but it's also continuous, it's been happening every year, year after year," he told BBC News.

"So whereas Wall Street by various calculations has to date lost, within the financial sector, $1-$1.5 trillion, the reality is that at today's rate we are losing natural capital at least between $2-$5 trillion every year."

Microscope reveals developing fish embryo

A new high-powered microscope has allowed scientists watch a zebrafish develop from a single cell into an embryo with a beating heart, the first time this has been possible in vertebrates, say researchers.

The team, based at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany, created a three-dimensional digital reconstruction of the tiny, developing fish.

They believe the technology may provide insights into how human organs form and lead to a better understanding of the genetic underpinnings of some diseases.

"This is like being able to watch an animal getting a life," says Dr Joachim Wittbrodt, who led the study published in the journal Science.

"You have a clump of cells that are transforming into an embryo with a beating heart while you are watching."

Scientists have previously achieved this feat with invertebrates such as worms, which only have a few hundred cells

World finance chiefs heading for Washington for crunch talks

The Group of Seven meeting will bring together finance ministers and central bankers on Friday from the United States, Germany, Japan, France, Britain, Italy and Canada for some collective-thinking on the credit crunch and crashing stocks.

They are to be joined by counterparts from emerging markets including Brazil, Russia, India and China for an impromptu gathering of the expanded so-called G20 group.

The United States finds itself in a rare position of weakness, facing many allies that have been highly critical of its economic policy and regulatory system blamed for the problems.

The gathering will be closely watched by investors, who are eager to see solutions and cross-border action by the world's leading powers to help a return to normal lending practices and calm stock markets.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - The United States called on NATO allies on Thursday to allow the alliance to attack the Afghan opium trade, which it said was bringing the Taliban up to $80 million a year.

NATO's operations commander, Gen. John Craddock, has asked the 26 NATO countries for authority to attack laboratories, trafficking networks and drug lords to stem a trade helping to finance a worsening Taliban insurgency.

Germany and several other NATO states are wary of extending the role of the NATO mission, whose long-term aim is to create conditions for Afghans to take over responsibility for their own security.

Some are concerned it could worsen the violence and might cause civilian casualties that could turn Afghans against foreign forces.

Proponents of the plan argue it is essential if NATO is to reduce violence in the longer term, and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the drugs trade was bringing the Taliban $60-$80 million a year.

clipper's remarks: Following the lead of the Aussie's (not mentioned in article), The British government this morning pledged to "injected capital," -- hundred of billions of pounds -- to rescue its banking system.

U.S. Treasury Secretary says he has "broad powers," to do the same.

I think this is a good idea. It sure is a better idea than buying stinking unsecured debt that may never be repaid, that is if I understand the term "injecting capital," correctly (which I think I do but it would help if these guys spoke English).

Why have they come up with what sounds like, at least, a reasonable plan?

I don't know...maybe it's the intense scrutiny they are under...i.e., "oversight," actually helps.

Of course there is some irony in this due to the fact that government buying ownership (buying stocks) in private companies is a cornerstone idea of socialism.

And this idea comes from the ultimate capitalist who oppose government intervention in any way.

I find this very interesting.

NASA's "Great Observatories" have teamed up with other telescopes on Earth and in space to produce glorious pictures showing how stars are born.

Here's a quick guide to the latest fireworks displays from NASA's three Great Observatories: Hubble, Spitzer and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory:

"NGC 346 is an astronomical zoo," Dimitrios Gouliermis of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Astronomy explained in today's image advisory. "When we combined data from various wavelengths, we were able to tease apart what's going in in different parts of the cloud."

Hidden star clusters
Scientists combined infrared observations from Spitzer with X-ray observations from Chandra to figure out how stars were being born inside clouds of dust so thick that you can't see them in visible light.

New research suggests the herbal medicine St John's Wort could be a suitable alternative for treating depression.

St John's Wort is a herb taken from a bright yellow star-shaped flower.

It comes in capsules, as a liquid or a tea bag. It's been used for decades as an alternative medicine for people with stress or depression.

This study into how effective the herb is as a treatment was carried out in Munich, Germany.

It involved nearly 5,500 people who were all suffering from some form of depression, ranging from mild to severe.

The researchers compared the effects of St John's Wort with a placebo, or dummy pill, and a wide range of old and new anti-depressants.

Dr Klaus Linde, who led the study, said: "Overall, the St John's Wort extracts tested in the trials were superior to placebo, similarly effective as standard anti-depressants, and had fewer side effects."

Doctors think it works because the herb keeps serotonin, a chemical which makes you happy, in the brain for longer.
